CLOTHES MAKING ONEABC Level 3 Award in Fashion and Textiles (Tailoring)
10 Thursday evenings, 6 –9pm, Autumn and Spring term only
Have you always wanted to have a go at making your own clothes?
Offering you an exciting opportunity to learn the art of patternmaking,
this course will equip you with the skills to assemble a basic garment
using industrial sewing machines and specialist equipment. The course is
designed to introduce an understanding of basic pattern cutting principles
and garment construction based on a standard size 12 block. You will also
learn how to take measurements and apply them correctly to develop
your own pattern using personal direct body measurements. You will learn
the technique of draping, a pattern cutting method used frequently by
designers, in addition to learning how patterns are created by draping fabric
into a body form on a stand.
Technical advice will be given on laying out pattern pieces when cutting
out in fabric as well as elements of garment construction in the making
of an ‘A’ line skirt. You will go on to develop and learn various seam types,
pockets and openings. Calico and pattern paper for making a practice
garment, known as a toile, will be supplied during the course. However,
you will need to provide your own fabric for the finished item.
There are no entry requirements, only a passion and motivation for the subject.
What you need to bring: Dressmaker’s pins, tape measure, paper and fabric scissors, pens and pencils, notebook.

CLOTHES MAKING TWO
10 Wednesday evenings, 6 –9pm
If you have mastered the art of patternmaking on our Clothes Making
One course…
Then why not try this new follow-on course which would enable you to
produce garments that demand a higher level of skill whilst developing
your existing pattern making skills. The tutor will use samples that
have a greater level of detail and demonstrate the more technical
and creative methods in pattern cutting. Making made-to-measure
garments, create your own blocks through to sewing toiles and learn
how to make a finished garment such as a blouse, jacket or dress. During
the course you will also have the opportunity to learn how to use the
industrial machinery for stretch fabrics.
Ideally you will have completed Clothes Making One or have existing
experience.
What you need to bring: Dressmaker’s pins, tape measure, paper and fabric scissors, pens and pencils, notebook, 2b drawing pencils and a sketchbook. Two varieties of sketchbooks for your research can be purchased from the AUCB.

CORSETRY: INTRODUCTION
10 Thursday evenings, 6 –9pm, Autumn and Spring terms only
Do you have an interest in period clothing and want to understand
how the female body shape has been manipulated by corsets since the
16th century?
Offering an introduction to period corset making, this course will give
you a basic understanding of the history of corsets from the 16th to the
19th Century. Examining the changes in style and construction, you will
look at how the corset changes the shape of the body and the affects it
has on the outer clothing garments.
Practical demonstrations will take you through the various stages of
cutting and making your own bespoke mid-19th century corset. You will
then explore original and modern techniques of drafting a pattern with
appropriate fabric as well as the use of specialist boning techniques to
create your very own corset, truthful to fit and period look.
There are no entry requirements but is designed to be very hand-on and
you will need to be able to use a sewing machine.
What you need to bring: Notebook, ruler, pencil, rubber and a sewing kit containing: paper scissors, small pointed embroidery scissors, cutting shears, tape measure, pins, needles, white cotton thread and white tailors chalk.

TEXTILE DESIGN: PRINTING TECHNIQUES
10 Monday evenings, 6 –9pm
Do you want to learn how to print your own fabric?
Exploring the art of hand decoration on fabric through a variety of
printing and dyeing techniques, you will be encouraged to create your
own images before transforming them into simplistic repeat patterns
to print on fabrics. Experimenting with a variety of basic fabric printing
methods such as silkscreen stencil, link / block printing and heat transfer
you will have the opportunity to explore the traditional craft techniques
of Shibori (tie-dye) and Batik (wax resist).
Whilst you can purchase a variety of different base fabrics from the
course tutor, you may want to bring your own having assessed the
suitability for the medium being explored.
There are no entry requirements, only an interest and a desire to develop
your print skills.
What you will need to bring: Your tutor will advise you what to bring in your first session. Please bring notebook and pen.

MILLINERY (HAT MAKING)

“Where did you get that hat? I should like to have one just the same
as that!”
Do you have an interest in hats and want to learn how to make your
own? This exciting new course will give you the unique opportunity
to learn the techniques needed to design a hat.
The course will begin with a study of the basics of Millinery being
inspired by history and you will be encouraged to create your own
style. You will learn about the different materials and stitches used
in Millinery and their use in different styles of hat. Through tutor-led
demonstrations, you will be able to use these techniques for your own
creations to take away and wear.
The skills acquired on this course will enable you to construct hats in
different materials, to cover them in top fabric and to finish your unique
hat designs with your choice of trims. The sewing on this course will be
done by hand.
You do not need any millinery experience to join this course just a desire
to put on your creative hat.
What you need to bring: A basic sewing kit including paper and fabric scissors, small snips, hand sewing needles of various sizes, glass headed pins, black and white thread, tailors chalk, tape measure, pliers, Cellotape, apron and a pencil. Basic materials will be provided for however, you may need to purchase larger quantities of specialist materials depending on number of hats completed.

SILVERSMITHING: INTRODUCTION

Have you always wanted to create your own pieces of jewellery?
Do you have ideas which you are keen to realise?
Working with both copper and silver, this course, which is ideal for
beginners, will enable you to design and create your own unique piece
of jewellery. Starting out by making a ring you will be guided through
the basic principles of jewellery making, including metal piercing and
soldering guided by the tutor who will be on hand to work with you
on your individual projects.
Through an informative induction you will be provided with all the
relevant health and safety information for full utilisation of the well
equipped workshop facilities.
There are no entry requirements to join this course just a desire to
realise your ideas.
What you need to bring: All equipment is provided and details will be given as to where to purchase silver. (As a guide, the cost of a ring is approx. £2–3 depending on the quantity of silver required). You should wear old clothes and closed toe, flat shoes.

MODELMAKING: INTRODUCTIONABC Award in Modelmaking and Presentation

Equip yourself with the fundamentals of modelmaking.
Working in our state-of-the-art workshop accompanied by the tutor
from our European leading modelmaking degree course, you will have the
opportunity to create a range of models. From film props to architectural
models and museum replicas as well as models used by artists, hobbyists
and designers, you will be challenged to produce professional models
working in a rewarding, fun and vibrant environment.
Discovering the processes and material used within the professional
model making industries such as mould making, armature building,
working with plastics, wood, sculpting compounds, resin and silicones,

LIFE SCULPTING: INTRODUCTION

Introducing you to the therapeutic art of life sculpting.
Working within fully equipped studios directed by tutors with
substantial experience of sculpting for industry, this course will guide
you through the stages of producing a basic sculp.
Observing a life model, you will transfer the image into a smaller scale
clay sculpt, either a torso (Autumn term) or a head (Spring term). In the
summer term you will have the unique opportunity to produce a head
sculpt of someone of your choice, from your own photographs.
The course will enable you to develop a range of skills from armature
building, to manipulating clay, adding shape, form, muscle tone and detail.
There are no entry requirements to join this course, just plenty of
enthusiasm and determination.

Suitable for anyone wishing to develop their skills in interior design

Undertaking a variety of projects you will put into practice areas of

BODY AND FACE PAINTING: INTRODUCTION
10 Thursday evenings, 6 –9pm
Push the boundaries of make-up.
Develop the techniques of body painting as well as fantasy make-up
artistry effects which may be applied to both the face and body, as they
are used in the world of professional theatre, fashion, film as well as the
making of pop promos.
You will be trained in the safe application of professional water and oil
body paints enabling you to create decorative and textural effects, hand
painted tattoos, mudwork, gold leaf and stencils which may be applied
to face and body for artistic and high fashion results.
In addition to acquiring all the skills required to create edgy high
fashion designs through to artistic abstracts for stunning photographic
stills, this course will cover the history and cultural relevance of face
and body painting.
This course is accessible to the complete novice as well as being invaluable
to practicing make-up artists, there are no entry requirements.

Have a few spare hours? Want to explore your artistic and creative
capabilities?
Our ‘Art Class’ offers a rewarding and beneficial way to spend time learning
and experimenting within the creative environments of the college and
local galleries. Offering the opportunity for you to experiment with
drawing, painting and basic printmaking techniques through a series of
exercises designed to explore a range of creative outcomes. You will also
learn about composition, measuring, negative space, tone, quality of line,
colour theory, perspective and much more using a wide range of media.
During the Autumn term eight evening classes will take place in the studios
at the Arts University College complemented by two Saturday morning
sessions at local galleries or on location in and around Bournemouth
and Poole. For the Spring and Summer terms, six of the classes will be
studio based with two daytrips, one to the stunning Brownsea Island and
the other to historic Poole Quay. These are the perfect places to take
inspiration and practice your new found skills.
There are no entry requirements to join this course however, you will
need to be able to travel to various locations for some of the classes.
What you need to bring: Soft drawing pencils (2B – 6B), putty type eraser and charcoal. All other materials will be provided including a sketch book.

Interested in life drawing as a leisure activity or to help with your studies?
You may have never drawn the human figure or you may have attended
classes previously, whatever your ability you will receive a warm
welcome and can be assured of a first-class experience.
Working through a structured programme you will acquire an array of
drawing skills including measuring, proportion, line and tone paying
close observation to the human form.
Being encouraged to be both personal and expressive in your response
you will draw a variety of experienced models, both male and female
exploring a variety of drawing materials and mark-making.
Whilst receiving teaching as a group, you will also be supported and

CREATIVE PRINTMAKING WORKSHOP
5 alternate Saturdays over 10 weeks, 9.30am – 4.30pm
New to printmaking or are you an experienced printmaker?
As a beginner you will be introduced to the world of printmaking,
learning and sampling a variety of techniques and printing methods.
You will develop imagery through the traditional ‘Fine Art’ process of
‘Intaglio Printing’ as well as experimenting with relief printing, including
monoprinting, lino and collograph techniques.
For the more experienced printmaker, you will have the full use of our
traditional, well equipped printmaking workshop in order to practice
your techniques with guidance from our experienced tutor if required.
There are no entry requirements for this course, so whether you are a
complete beginner or a practicing artist wishing to build a portfolio of
work, you will have the opportunity to produce creative work in a ‘Fine
Art’ medium.
Unfortunately editioning of prints is not possible on this course.
NB: If you have any respiratory concerns, please contact us as this course may be unsuitable due to materials / substances used on the course.

SCREENPRINTING WORKSHOPABC Certificate in Print Making (Screen printing)

Want to try out equipment and techniques of screen printing?
With small class sizes, this hands-on course will cover a wide range of
water based screen printing processes. Photographic stencil emulsions
will be used to make screens from photographic digital or hand-drawn
sources in addition, to using methods of working directly on the screen
mesh, allowing experimental print work to be carried out.
There are no entry requirements to join this course just bags of
enthusiasm and the desire to get creative.
What you need to bring: Apron, latex gloves, basic drawing materials and a sketchbook or selection of images that you would like to use. Paper will be provided but a charge will be made for high quality cartridge paper.

PHOTOGRAPHY 1: THE FUNDAMENTALSABC Level 3 Award in Photographic Planning and Development
10 Thursday evenings, 6 –9pm
An opportunity not to be missed.
Learn all you need to know about how to manually operate a camera
and take ‘good’ pictures. Through a series of lectures, demonstrations
and some practical sessions you will learn how to effectively use the
manual functions on your camera in order to achieve creative control
in your photography.
You will be guided through the basic principles and practice of
photography, study the work of celebrated photographers and learn
to see and make more interesting pictures. In addition, you will gain a
basic understanding of camera functions including shutter speed,
aperture, lens control and picture making components such as
composition, subject and lighting.
The perfect introduction to photography, there are no entry
requirements for this course and is suitable for both digital and
35mm users.

An opportunity to build upon the Fundamentals of Photography 1 whilst
experimenting and developing your photographic skills.
Focusing on digital photography and creative image making, industry
professionals and academics will share with you a different aspect of
photography each week, including camera functions, equipment, colour
management, digital printing, studio lighting, portraiture, still-life and
location photography, whilst developing your own creativity and ideas.
Using available lighting and portable flash equipment you will also learn
how to control light under varying conditions.
Demonstrations will explain how to get the best from your photographic
equipment whilst there will be ample opportunity to discuss your
images and techniques. The course will culminate with a final critique
and an evaluation session.
In order to get the most from this course you must have successfully
completed Photography 1.
What you need to bring: A digital camera with manual control and any accompanying photographic equipment, an A4 ring binder and a pen/pencil for note taking.

A chance to develop your photographic skills to a professional level.
Written and directed by professional photographers and designed for
students who already have a good basic level of photographic skills, the
emphasis of this course is based upon a practical approach and consists
of 6 evening workshops and several location shoots.
Using the most up-to-date studio equipment the evening workshops will
concentrate on a wide range of creative studio lighting demonstrations
and solutions backed up with colour management and practical
Photoshop techniques. Photographers will be encouraged to develop
their own ‘vision and style’ from constructive advice and critique. The
culmination of the course is an exhibition of your portfolio.

Do you want to learn how to act?
This introductory course is designed to encourage you in a supportive
environment, in which you can learn from your peers and the tutor.
Whether you are a complete beginner to acting, or an enthusiastic
amateur, this ten week practical workshop will provide you with a
sound knowledge and skill base.
The course will guide you through different acting techniques for theatre,
television and film. Further to which, the fundamentals of character
development will be explored through a variety of techniques enabling you
to create a believable, fully developed three dimensional character. The
emphasis is on discovering the psychology and emotional life of everyday

An ideal introduction to the reality of film making for people who need

a series of practical workshops you will gain hands-on experience in

you will cover many aspects of film making including; story and script
development, planning, shot-lists and storyboarding, directing, lighting

Have you ever considered writing for the media?
Providing an opportunity for all aspiring writers to develop the skills and
techniques for writing fiction, this course looks at practical ways to get
started, whilst promoting greater writing confidence. Building upon the
unique strengths of each writer, highly practical exercises supported by

Do you want to write fictional drama scripts for film, television and radio?
Craft techniques of scriptwriting will be explored through presentations,
discussions and the use of relevant clips. You will have the opportunity
to see your script ‘workshopped’ in a group before being critiqued in

Sessions will focus on all aspects of the craft of scriptwriting, including

An introduction to desktop publishing using InDesign.
Learning how to create a variety of documents incorporating text and
images using the industry de facto programme. You will explore: how to
create single and multipage layouts, preparing and using master pages,
using master page elements, object styles and introducing both text and
images. Before developing an understanding for formatting text, creating
and using typographic style sheets, formatting and cropping images,
copying and pasting elements, scaling and rotating objects as well as
running text around graphic objects.
You will then have an opportunity to discover the potential to linking
images with Photoshop, creating and applying colour to type and graphic
objects, adding transparency to objects and how to create electronic
documents in portable document format (PDF). This course will also

An introduction to Adobe Photoshop.
Photoshop enables you to prepare, retouch and edit photographic
images that originated either as scanned images or were derived from
a digital camera. Increasingly Photoshop is used to prepare imagery and
elements for websites as well as preparing images and graphic artwork
for printing.
During this course you will gain an understanding of scan resolution and
file size whilst developing the skills to resample an image, optimize an
image for the web, make selections and perfect them and cut, copy and
paste images. With the guidance of the course tutor you will explore
colour perception, theory and how it impacts on the digital image,
colour models RGB, CMYK, etc before discovering techniques for colour
correction, preparing an image for both print and the web, creating
montages as well as basic retouching techniques, using levels and curves,
utilising layers and adjustment layers and preparing web elements.

An introduction to Illustrator CS3.
A powerful drawing and design tool, Illustrator can be used to create
complex vector based images, that are equally at home in print or
web based applications. Over the duration of this introductory level

and texture as well as utilising different types of line weight and brush

An introduction to the concepts, terminology and techniques of
web design.
On completion of this practically based course you will have gained
sufficient skills and understanding to produce a website to an acceptable
level of design using Dreamweaver CS.
Discovering how to create pages from scratch, use of tables, prepare
images for the web, add text to a website and work with cascading style
sheets both for content and positioning. Further developing skills to
create both single and multi-page websites, create and use navigation
elements to create links between pages, hyperlinks and anchored
links, introduce media elements to a website as well as exploring the

will construct a number of web elements. You will create web pages
and elements that appear on the page that are experimental in nature,
to answer a given brief. Using Web 2.0 technologies, the web pages
you design will be fully accessible and conform to current W3c web
standards and guidelines. You will learn to use appropriate software
applications to create, modify and manipulate design elements; use

Opening up the world of three dimensional modelling.
3D Studio Max is an industry standard three-dimensional modelling
application which enables the user to create, render in a variety
of materials, and animate virtually anything. It is widely used in
engineering, product design and architecture.
This course gives an insight into: the 3D studio max environment and
tools, bone editing tools, fin adjustment tools, object properties, editable
polygon surfaces, soft selection enhancements, modifier enhancements,
symmetry modifier, vertex weld modifier, edit normal modifier, layers,
materials and maps, ink and paint, translucent shader, lighting and
advanced lighting override. As well as animation, set key mode, track
view changes, splines and IK changer, Boolean controller, gimbal rotation,
auto tangent interpolation, global illumination, photometric and daylight
lights, rendering to textures and exposure controls.

Changing dates or postponing
a course

to change the start date of a course

to offer you a credit voucher which
entitles you to a discount off any
further course you wish to join.
5. If a class is postponed for reasons which
we are responsible, such as staff illness,
we will try to reschedule your class to
try to make up for the missing hours.
Cancellations by us
6. The courses all have a minimum
attendance level and may have to
be cancelled if students drop out at
the last minute or we do not receive
sufficient numbers to run the course.
We will try to keep you up to date with
this information if it looks likely that
your course may not run.
7. The Arts University College reserves
the right to make such changes to the
