A Message From KAC’s CEO

Dear Friends,

As children we couldn’t wait for the holidays and summer vacation to arrive. It used to seem like forever from one birthday to the next; so much so that we had to announce our age with fractions. As we get older it is amazing how perspective shifts. Something as definitive as time that once seemed so slow now speeds by.

2016 has somehow come and gone. It is worthy to spend a few minutes looking back to celebrate our successes and learn from our mistakes so we can plan for our future. It is also a great time to reflect on how we got where we are.

People. That is the answer to the question of how KAC got where it is today. KAC was started by people for people. Over the years business operations and program services have grown and changed but remain linked by the mission to help people. Annually, a virtual army of people - 400 volunteers, 147 staff, 455 individual donors and 160 business and foundations align through KAC to support the success of over 3,000 people with disabilities.

Maya Angelou said of success, “If you find it in your heart to care for somebody else, you will have succeeded.” Your success is our success. Thank you for being part of our journey.

Removing Barriers. Changing Perceptions. Building Confidence. You make it possible. Thank you for a great year!

With deepest gratitude,

Christine M. Weyker

KAC provides a supportive and enriching environment that fosters each child’s social, emotional, cognitive, language and physical development. We promote the positive accomplishments of each child and believe that parents and primary caregivers have the most influence on a child’s success. Early Intervention Birth to Three Program (EIP)Provides service coordination, special education, physical, occupational and speech therapies for children ages birth to three years, who exhibit developmental delays. Early Head StartHome-based, family centered services for low-income pregnant women and families with children up to three years are used to develop positive relationships. Services facilitate child development, support parental roles, and promote self-sufficiency. Services are provided at no cost. SPROUTS PlaygroupsPlaygroups provide developmentally appropriate environments that support children’s growth and learning. Parents and caregivers have an opportunity to network and learn from each other.

Hanen ProgramHanen is an evidence-based program that educates and coaches parents to provide speech and language therapy to their child at home. Staff work closely with parents and caregivers to ensure that therapeutic activities can be incorporated throughout the child’s daily routine for the best possible outcomes.

In-Depth Look: Summer Employment Exploration Program

Students preparing for graduation are often uncertain about their career goals. Summer Employment Exploration helps students with special needs, ages 16-21, gain a better understanding of the work world. Students are provided with hands on activities and soft skill training to learn about the employment process including finding a job, developing interview skills, writing résumés and learning how to maintain employment. Students are given the opportunity to “try out” a variety of different jobs in the community, while getting paid for the work they do. Summer is meant for fun, and this program includes a variety of fun activities aimed at enhancing individual employability.

Stable AssistantFrom filling water buckets for the horses to drink, to sweeping hay and debris from the concrete that surrounds the stables, students receive the full Midwest Therapeutic Riding Program employee experience!

Inventory AssociateStudents had the opportunity to help with a vital piece of on3 Promotional Partners’ company: counting inventory! Thousands of items have been counted to ensure that the inventory is up to date with what is recorded in the system.

Childcare Teacher AssistantAt Here We Grow Academy’s daycare facility students had the chance to work with children ages 12 months to 12 years old. From reading the children books, to working on puzzles, the students enjoyed the opportunity to see the innerworkings of daycare employment.

Grocery TrainingStudents learned how to stock the shelves with product while checking expiration dates at Shalom Center Food Pantry. They also used their customer service skills bagging groceries and helping shoppers take their bags to their car.The students enjoy getting the opportunity to work with people in the community and doing their part to give back!
