Dear Alumni and Friends of De La Salle,

It is our pleasure to present the 2012-2013 Investors Report and share the great pride we feel about De La Salle Institute. We are blessed to partner with generous supporters who believe in our educational mission, Lasallian tradition and unique, co-institutional learning experience.

This Investors Report focuses on the philanthropic culture created at De La Salle beginning in the 1880s when Brother Adjutor of Mary personally obtained thirty-five $1,000 scholarships to start funding the construction of the school. The report also details the progress De La Salle has made since 1889 by responding to the educational needs of young people.

As we move toward the future, De La Salle must continually respond to meet the educational needs of our Meteors. As a private, independent, Catholic secondary school, our financial support comes from the exemplary generosity of alumni, parents and friends. We require this help to provide excellent educational opportunities to the students entrusted to our care.

Next May, De La Salle will launch its 125th Anniversary and we hope you will join us in celebration of this momentous occasion! We remain deeply grateful to everyone who invests financially in our mission of education and helps us continue our culture of philanthropy at De La Salle Institute.

Sincerely,

4 De La Salle Investors Report 2012-2013

Creating a Culture of Philanthropy at De La Salle

Throughout the summer of 1888 without a penny to begin with, Brother Adjutor of Mary personally obtained thirty-five $1,000 scholarships to begin funding the construction of the school. These generous businessmen and civic leaders were given a Certificate entitling one student from every generation to receive a “tuition free” education at De La Salle. By the time of the cornerstone ceremony on May 19, 1889, fifty-one thousand dollars had been collected and another twenty-two thousand more was pledged. Since then, several De La Salle families have benefited from the investment in this certificate.

Thus began the culture of philanthropy at De La Salle. Brother Adjutor said it best: “It only takes the efforts of one individual to have a positive effect on the life of another.” This long-standing tradition continues today with the financial leadership of members in De La Salle’s President’s Club, as well as the support from thousands of alumni and friends who invest in the mission of Lasallian education.

Since its humble beginnings 124 years ago, De La Salle has responded to the needs of its students by providing young men and the last 11 years, young women from diverse backgrounds with an innovative Lasallian education just as Brother Adjutor of Mary had envisioned. With an alumni base of 20,500 Meteors, the Institute remains exceedingly true to the vision of Brother Adjutor by helping the next generation of Meteors fulfill their dreams.

De La Salle’s culture of philanthropy has been built by conducting capital campaigns, legacy gifts, establishing endowed scholarships and supporting the Annual Fund. These philanthropic investments to the Institute come in all shapes and sizes. This effort has ensured the strength of the institution and created the necessary culture of philanthropy to sustain and help De La Salle thrive.

A culture of philanthropy works when all alumni, families, friends and the business community work in partnership for the greater good of society. De La Salle is an example of a quality investment whose mission is to create faith-filled citizens, who contribute to society by living their lives in service of the larger community. The return on this investment is immeasurable.

Capital Campaigns

• De La Salle began its first capital campaign post-WWII to raise funds to construct the “Tech Building” now known as the J. Walter Clarke Building. This facility was constructed to teach classes in Industrial Arts.

• Launching its second capital campaign, De La Salle raised a half-million dollars for classroom expansion. Ground-breaking for construction of the Dan Ryan Building began in 1954 and was completed in 1960. This new addition provided for the influx of baby boomers attending De La Salle.

• In 1995, De La Salle launched a very ambitious capital campaign to position the school for the 21st century and prepare its students for the challenges and opportunities of the new millennium. More than $7 million was raised to renovate and expand its campus, to secure greater financial stability by adding to its endowment and to increase the amount of financial aid the school could provide to its students each year. De La Salle added a new chapel, a media center, several computer labs, a new cafeteria, the Parmer Activity Center and new administrative offices.

• In order to continue to advance its impact and mission, and remain thriving in a competitive market, De La Salle launched its most recent capital campaign in 2002 to expand the Lourdes Hall Campus, create the Tablet PC Program, provide a campus-wide wireless environment, provide technolgy training for the faculty and students and land aquisition.

Legacy Gifts

• Estate gifts are established to leave a lasting legacy on behalf of the donor. These gifts are transformational gifts for the school and are used for capital improvements, scholarships, and curriculum enhancements.

Endowed Scholarships

• Endowed scholarships have been another way to sustain the mission of Lasallian education from one generation to the next. This aspect of our culture of philanthropy provides the school with its most stable source of income. These generous gifts will last a lifetime and truly make a difference for countless students at De La Salle. Endowed scholarships have been recently established by the families of Omar Torres ’05, who died in military service in Iraq, Joseph Kaye ‘49 and Raymond Prost.

Annual Fund

• The Annual Fund encompasses gifts made by individuals to De La Salle every year and remains the primary source for scholarship and educational enhancements. Gifts to the Annual Fund provide the school with the resources it needs to sustain its mission of Lasallian education. It is another way that De La Salle continues to create a culture of philanthropy.

It is important to note that you play a critical role in the success of our Meteors. Next year marks the 125th Anniversary of the founding of De La Salle Institute and we invite you to join us in the celebration of our Lasallian mission of education. Through the generous support of alumni, parents, friends and the business community, we continue to meet the challenges of the financial demands of private education and continue the culture of philanthropy entrusted to us by Brother Adjutor of Mary.

With a planned gift, a donor bequeaths either a specific amount or a percentage of his/her estate to De La Salle Institute in his/her will. The donor retains principal and income during his or her lifetime.

Gifts as Tributes

Family members and friends who wish to make a gift to the Institute in memory of a loved one can now see their name listed on the memorial plaque which hangs adjacent to the school’s Signum Fidei Chapel at the Institute Campus.

1889 - $51,000 was raised from benevolent and wealthy local businessmen to build De La Salle Institute.

12 De La Salle Investors Report 2012-2013

One of the hallmarks of De La Salle has always been its accessibility to young people from all economic backgrounds, especially the working class. Since its earliest days, De La Salle and the Christian Brothers have cared for and educated the sons of working class families. Today, De La Salle continues to attract a widely diverse student population.

The financial challenge of assisting students and their families has become increasingly difficult over the past several decades as the need for student funding has surpassed available scholarship dollars. Largely due to the generous support of alumni and friends, De La Salle continues to meet this challenge by helping our students and their families with the financial demands of private education. For the 2012-2013 academic year, more than $1.6 million in student financial assistance was awarded.

ScholarshipsJohn Walter Clarke, Class of 1912 Grant – is offered to each student and helps make up the difference between the actual educational cost per student and the tuition charged per student. This grant is made possible by endowment income and individual contributions.

Outside Grants – are established by outside interest groups, sometimes individuals, whose intent is to assist underprivileged families in attending private Catholic schools like De La Salle. These special programs raise their own funds and typically have their own stipulations for qualification. Such programs include the Daniel Murphy Scholarship Foundation, LINK Unlimited and HighSight.

Endowed – are permanent, perpetual sources of income for De La Salle. They are held in trust and are invested wisely. Under the school’s current policy, 5.5% of the total endowment is available for the student financial assistance program.

Annual – are established with annual gifts of $1,500 or more to help provide for a portion of a student’s educational costs during an academic year.

By supporting the school’s student financial assistance program, you are not only investing in a cause, you are continuing our culture of philanthropy at De La Salle. The students you help are living testaments to your interest, concern and generosity. If you would like to learn more about establishing a scholarship at De La Salle, please contact Iris Gist Cochran, Director of Development, at 312.842.7355 ext 152 or [email protected].

In a pooled income fund, there is a transfer of property to De La Salle with income retained and an earned income annually to someone for life (other than De La Salle Institute); funds are pooled with other donors’ gifts and life income keeps pace with market changes.

A charitable gift annuity allows for a life annuity for one or two lives, issued by De La Salle in exchange for a gift or property with all of the assets of De La Salle guaranteeing the annuity payment to the annuitant(s) at the time of the gift. The donor increases their income by consuming principal and earnings over a lifetime.

With charitable life insurance, there is a partial transfer of future income to De La Salle; the systematic premiums on policy are owned by De La Salle and there is a creation of a capital fund to De La Salle without evading estate assets. Premiums may be terminated at any time if financial circumstances change.

Note: These are some of the ways you can benefit the future of De La Salle Institute and minimize your federal tax liability. It is produced with the understanding that we are not engaged in rendering legal, accounting or other professional services. If legal advice or other expert assistance is required, the services of a competent professional in the field of law, accounting or insurance should be sought.

26 De La Salle Investors Report 2012-2013

Anniversary Class Giving Each year, De La Salle Institute hosts the traditional all-class year alumni banquet. At the 117th Annual Alumni Banquet, we commemorated all five-year anniversary classes. Hosted at De La Salle Institute on Friday, October 5, 2012, the celebration included the Jubilee Classes of 1962 and 1987. Other classes celebrating reunions were the classes of 1937, 1942, 1947, 1952, 1957, 1967, 1972, 1977, 1982, 1992, 1997, 2002 and 2007.

A very important part of the celebration is establishing the anniversary class gift scholarships. These scholarships represent the care for the past and future excellence of De La Salle Institute. Whether alumni attend the banquet or not, support of the class scholarships are a way of saying “thank you” to De La Salle for a privileged education. On behalf of the entire De La Salle educational community, we would like to extend a special thank you to all anniversary classes for their support of our Meteors!

*Note: Total class giving includes all annual gifts.

De La Salle to Celebrate 125th Anniversary

One hundred and twenty-four years ago, De La Salle Institute was founded with a student-driven mission to foster a desire for excellence in education for underprivileged working-class families. Since then, more than 20,500 students have walked through the halls of De La Salle and have developed academically, athletically, artistically and spiritually. This mission is alive today more than ever, thanks to the alumni, parents and friends who have guaranteed our presence as a leader in Catholic secondary education. You help ensure the Institute’s continued success for future generations of Meteors!

It is because of you that many more will use De La Salle as their stepping stone in life. In recognition of the numerous investors who provide us with the resources necessary to fulfill our mission and to move closer toward our vision for the future, we look forward to celebrating De La Salle’s 125th Anniversary next year with you.

We will kick-off the 125th Anniversary of De La Salle Institute’s founding when we host the Great Futures Gala on Thursday, May 15, 2014 at the Hilton Chicago. At the gala, we will honor those who generously give of their time, talent and treasure and continue to create a culture of philanthropy at De La Salle. The event will also provide an opportunity for everyone to deepen their relationship with the Institute and witness how the unique, thriving educational environment existing at both De La Salle campuses richly benefit the young women and men entrusted to our care.

You have contributed so much to the success of De La Salle and continue to be an integral part of this vital educational force in Chicago. Please look for more information about the upcoming events and make plans to join us – as you play a significant role in this very special history. It will be a wonderful opportunity for us to celebrate De La Salle together after all these years!

By their individual gifts, alumni and friends secure important funds for De La Salle. Last year, matching gifts increased donor contributions by $18,700 in additional support. Many companies offer matching gift programs to encourage their employees to contribute to a favorite charity. You can double or even triple the value of your gift if your employer or your spouse’s employer participates in a matching gift program. Programs may also match gifts made by their retired employees. Please contact your Human Resources office at your or your spouse’s place of employment concerning the availability of a matching gifts program.

The charitable remainder trust is an arrangement whereby you transfer money or property to a trustee, requiring the trustee to provide for payments exclusively to you or one or more individuals for life or for a period of years, with principal passing to De La Salle when the rights of the individuals terminate, usually at death. The nature of the recompense to the income beneficiary(ies) distinguishes whether it is an annuity trust or a unitrust.

An annuity trust pays a stated dollar amount (equal to at least 5% of the value of the money or property you place in trust) that remains fixed over the life of the trust to the beneficiary you designate. This is a guaranteed payment that is made annually without regard to the investment experience of the trust.

With a unitrust, instead of a specific dollar amount being payable to the income beneficiary, a specific percentage of the value of the property in trust must be paid annually to the income beneficiary you designate. The amount of income paid keeps pace with market changes.

36 De La Salle Investors Report 2012-2013

“She’s an incredible mentor, and leads by example. If she wants you to do something, she’s right there pulling more than her fair share of the weight on a project. She’s so encouraging, and sees these great skills in a person and then helps you to develop those skills, so that you have something to be proud of as well.”

These are the words Emily Arvizu used to describe her colleague Mary Ellen Lesniak when she nominated her for the National Center for Family Literacy’s 2013 Toyota Teacher of the Year awards. “It was an opportunity for me to sit down and think about how influential she’s been in my life.”

Mary Ellen is the English as a Second Language and family literacy coordinator for the Tolton Center. She took second place in the annual awards, sponsored by Toyota for more than 20 years, a meaningful honor that came with the prize of a $2,500 grant to buy iPads for her classroom to help teach her students technological literacy. Mary Ellen said the tablets will be invaluable for extension programs that take students outside the classroom.

“I really believe that with iPads and the tablets today, this is going to bridge the digital divide... making technology more accessible to everyone,” Lesniak said. “Many of our students have smartphones now, and once we show them the applications that can be used on the tablet — like thousands of free

books, including an English-Spanish dictionary — they can also use some of those same programs on their phones when they leave our classroom.”

Lesniak doesn’t believe she was an obvious choice for the award, asserting that the recognition must be based on the impact the Tolton Center has on the city of Chicago. The Tolton Center serves 600 people annually, including at risk adults and their families; ex-offenders; recovering substance abusers; the homeless; victims of domestic violence, displaced workers, and recent immigrants. More than 18 staff members provide services at 5 sites throughout Chicago. More than 50 volunteers

contribute 600 hours of service annually and play important roles as tutors, counselors, and mentors. Tolton strives to be an agent of both personal transformation and social change as it works in partnership for the common good.

If you would to know how you could be involved in this transformation process or would like more information about the Tolton Adult

Education Centers please contact De La Salle’s Vice President of External Affairs, Lawrence Blakley at (312) 842-7355 ext 142 or [email protected] or Tolton’s Executive Director, Susan Perez, at (312) 746-7744 or [email protected].
