Letter from the President By: John Davis

Greetings CCAA Members and Friends,
For those of you who did not attend the CCAA Spring Educational Conference in Tulsa,
LOOK AT WHAT YOU MISSED!
We had a look into the future of computer “Additive Manufacturing” of crane hooks. We
learned about rope terminations for steel, synthetic, and hybrid crane ropes along with an
update on ASME B30.30 for rope inspection and replacement criteria for these products.
An in-depth review of the problems and inspection methods for Overhead Limit Switches
was presented. We were then treated to an outstanding visit to the PACCAR Winch
facility where we toured the plant, reviewed the internals of the popular Braden hoists and
were given instruction on the inspection and testing of crane mounted hoists. The day was
finished with the presentation of the CCAA website member portal use.
First thing the following morning, we boarded a bus for The Crosby Group’s Tulsa Plant
which specializes in the manufacture of sheaves and blocks and we were given a great
plant tour and a training session on inspection methods for those products. As we
continued the meeting at the hotel, the group was given insight regarding the use of every
day technology in crane inspections. Then we heard a presentation on risk avoidance for
crane surveyors covering methods and techniques to minimize risk. Following that we
heard an outstanding presentation how to discover the quality of a welded repair. The
conference concluded with an in-depth review of crane inspection classifications.
Much of this information will be posted on the Member Portal of the CCAA website.
Sincerely,
John W. Davis, PE

CCAA 2018 Spring Educational Conference Tulsa, OK Presentations and PACCAR and Crosby Tours What You Missed….. There were two especially informative field trips at the 2018 Spring Educational
Conference. If you missed it, you missed a good one. The field trips with PACCAR Winch
and Crosby were very informative due to our Conference Planning Committee
communicating with our Hosts to provide our members content they would find most
interesting. These two Manufacturers were very generous to accommodate CCAA
requests. Stephen Doyle of PACCAR Winch and Danny Bishop of Crosby went the extra
mile.
Many parts of the PACCAR Winch tour were very interesting to the members. One was
the complete disassembly of a PD12C Hoist at their test Lab by Bill Tibbett. Bill identified
inspection points and the internal components of this hydraulic compound planetary hoist
equipped on many popular cranes. One of the important pieces of information that was
provided was the recommended times to perform disassembly for internal inspections of
components for wear. This will vary between 4 to 8 years depending upon the severity of
service.
PACCAR Winch manufactures both winches and hoists at this location. From outward
appearance, they are of similar construction. When asked about this distinction, an
important reason was provided by our host. First, a winch is designed to pull loads
horizontally across the ground, and a hoist is built to raise loads vertically in the air,
usually as part of a crane. In crane work the ability to provide precision load lowering
speed control is paramount. They also differ in PD to RD ratios for the wire rope, design
specifications, and brakes. Finally, many of us use the words hoist and winch as
synonymous action verbs, which is okay. As nouns, a winch and a hoist are different!
At Crosby, it was the same openness of discussion and willingness to inform that we
CCAA members have come to know from the past conference previously held in Tulsa.
During the factory tour, we viewed master links being formed, welded, and assembled
from heated rod stock. In the sheave manufacturing area, we viewed center hubs welding,
rolling of the forged flange, and machining and balancing of the completed product up to
72” in diameter. Forged bowl hooks and cast duplex hooks are assembled at this factory,
and the complete process was observed from start to final testing.
New CCAA Officers were installed with all the enthusiasm we have come to expect. Good
luck guys!
