Conversation skills for children: Talking and Listening When it comes to learning about talking and listening the child will learn from their parents. Parents can teach their child by prompting, guiding and practising. Children are likely to learn best when they are told clearly what you want them to do. For example you might: Prompt your child to say, “Please say thank you to

Grandma for taking you to the park.”

Guide your child by saying, Sarah, if I’m speaking to

someone you need to say, “Excuse me”, and then

wait until I am ready to listen.”

Have practise conversations with your child

where you take turns to ask questions and listening

to answers.

Encourage children to voice their opinion and that

it is important to listen to others opinions also.

Model good listening. Children need time to talk

and they feel that they have been heard.

Being able to talk and listen to others is important for children. It helps children make friends, be listened to, ask for what they want and mix with others. A great question to ask your children after school when they get home is “What went well for you today?” This is a growth mindset and positive approach which is great real dialogue from your child about what they have experienced through the day. New star for Cranbourne East Primary school towards sustainability.

Figure 1 solar power fun

We’ve achieved our Energy star, another milestone

in our journey towards Sustainability certification

in becoming a Resourcesmart AuSSI Vic School just

recently.

To launch our Energy module CERES delivered a

very informative and entertaining whole school

Incursion- Melbourne Energy Classroom. The

presenters enthralled our years 3 to 6 students

and Power Rangers excited our P to 2 students as

part of our Kickstart program. Energy education

continued in classrooms throughout the year with many different activities focused on

how energy is used, how it can be saved, different forms of energy and the importance

of knowing about and using renewable sources of energy.

Students have also been recycling with tubs in every learning space, improving on

bringing rubbish free lunches and snacks to school and growing great healthy produce

to sell to the community in our vegetable

garden.

We are well on our way in contributing

to and educating about living in a more

sustainable future.
