DEAR PARENTS/CARERS: Leaders Assembly We have an outstanding group of student leaders in our school and it was never more evident than in the way they prepared and presented the assembly last Thursday. It was witty, interactive and really informative. Have I told you before how much I love our assemblies? COVID 19 -Business as Usual - Be Prepared and Dont be Scared With all that is going on in the world at the moment I would like to reassure parents and carers that it is business as usual at school and we are taking good care of students in terms of continued learning and playing routines. We continue to take precautions as outlined by the Health Department and are making sure that we take the emotional temperatureof staff and students each day to make sure that every- one is OK and any concerns are addressed calmly and in a developmentally appropriate way. The update that I sent out on Monday is comprehensive but the key points outline the need for; Sensible hygiene measures Social distancing as far as we are able Sick children to be kept home. If they present as sick at school we will need to have them collected Planning for if and when school closure is announced. Having the capacity for some online learning to take place. More on this when it becomes necessary. I have to say I have been so impressed with the calm approach that our staff, students and parents are displaying. There have been some amazing acts of kindness and consideration. Mrs Page was so grateful for the donations of toilet paper when her little family was in danger of having none! Students and staff at risk are making the decision to self isolate and I support this. Some parents have also chosen to isolate their children and I understand their concerns. Every family needs to make their best decision based on solid, substantiated information. Together we will get to the other side of this event. After School Play

Many of our families get together at school, after the school day has ended, to chat and play. I see this

as the way our community connects and grows in positive, helpful ways and I support it.

I ask that you take your duty of care seriously and supervise your children well around the school. Please

respect the grounds and equipment. Respect, responsibility, achieving and safety are still expected.

Also be mindful that cleaners, gardeners, education assistants and teachers will be getting on with their

other duties.

Thank you for your consideration. Jen Graffin Principal

National Young Leaders Conference

On Monday 9th March, our Student Councillors attended the National Young

Leaders Conference at the Perth Convention Centre. This is an annual

conference that consists of keynote speakers, multimedia presentations and

interactive learning that develops strong leadership values in young

Australians. This year the presenters included John Coutis, Eamon Sullivan,

Dana Hooker and Lachie Smart. The students really enjoyed the day and

have come back to school inspired to be great leaders.

NAPLAN

The National Assessment Program in Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) will be conducted from Tuesday

12th May to Friday 22nd May 2020. Students in Years 3 and 5 will participate in the annual NAPLAN tests in

reading, writing, language conventions (spelling, grammar and punctuation) and numeracy. The

assessments provide parents and schools with an understanding of how individual students are performing

at the time of the test. NAPLAN is just one aspect of the assessment and reporting process.

It is important to reassure your child that NAPLAN is just one

assessment, and to simply try their best. Teachers will ensure that they

are familiar with the types of questions they may get, and how to

navigate their way through the online testing.

The NAPLAN Online Public Demonstration Site is available for staff, students and parents/carers to view

and interact with the test items. The site also contains FAQs.

https://www.nap.edu.au/online-assessment/public-demonstartyion-site

All students are expected to participate. Those with a disability may qualify for adjustments. A NAPLAN

report will be issued to each student later in the year.

If you would like to know more, you can speak to your teacher, to the school Leadership Team or visit

nap.edu.au

NAPLAN Practice Tests

We are required to run Practice NAPLAN Tests through the platform from 23rd March, Week 8. A national coordinated practice test will be held at 9am on Monday 23rd March. At this time, the maximum number of students that we expect to have in any test session will sit the test at this time. These practice tests provide an opportunity for students and test administrators to become more familiar with using the test platform and to test the school as well as the WA and national testing systems.

Tennis – Academy Plate

Last week nine amazing students (Amelia, Ella, Isla, Lyla, Jayden, Joshua, Bodie, Lochlan and Oscar)

participated in the Academy Plate. They played singles and doubles matches against schools from across

the metropolitan area. We are so proud of both the girls and boys teams as they both made the finals. The

girls won five out of their six round robin matches, finishing second in their pool and qualifying for the semi

-final. They played fantastic but eventually were defeated by Noranda who went on to be the overall

winners, finishing third overall. The boys played seven matches in total and finished third in their pool.

They hung in in some very tight matches in the quarter and semi-final, going down to Wesley College in

the grand final, coming second overall. We are extremely proud of both the girls and boys teams and we

thank Tanya for her assistance in coaching the teams at lunchtimes and on the day. Well done to all

involved, their performances, sportsmanship and efforts were commendable.

Running Club

The participation in Running Club has been fantastic this term. On Wednesday’s we have been working

on our technical skills and there has been a significant improvement observed in all runners – well done.

Recently on Friday’s we launched counting our laps and improving our endurance. So far, our students

have run just under 1,000 laps. Unfortunately until further notice we have had to cancel Running Club.

PE Lessons

This week we started basketball as a sport for our more senior classes. Basketball is a fantastic team

game that incorporates all the FMS such as running, dodging, dribbling (bouncing the ball), shooting,

passing and much more. It has been incredible to see the students so engaged in lessons and most

pleasing to observe such cooperative team work on display where students encourage and include every-

one in the small sided games that our lessons conclude with. Our younger students continue to develop

their FMS, cooperation and balance through a variety of fun and exciting physical activities. Its great to

see their confidence grow throughout the term.

The school office is a very busy place, especially around drop-off and pick-up

times. We thank everyone for their patience during these times. We

understand that on occasion, there are unforeseen circumstances, and a

parent may need to get a message to their child during the school day. We

will endeavour to do so, but there may be times when this may not be

possible. We strongly recommend that all parents give their child this

important message - If a parent does not arrive to pick them up from school,

make your way to the office and we will help.

Beach Swimming

What a fantastic two weeks the year 5 and 6 students have had a beach swimming. Developing skills, knowledge and understanding about how to swim safely at our beaches is essential. The students participated with great enthusiasm and zest. Students learnt skills like how to stand in a ‘surfing’ position to be balanced against crashing waves, signals that lifesavers use during emergency situations on the beach and swimming strokes. Well done to all students involved and to the teachers that provided supervision.

Craigie Heights Students – Community Sport

We would like to congratulate the T-ball players (featured in the photos) who recently played in the TBA-WA State Championships who participated over the March long weekend at Langley Park where more than 80 representative teams of both boys and girls, represented about 30 clubs from metropolitan and country regions. So great to see our CHPS students actively involved and contributing to our community and excelling.

We would like to acknowledge Sonny on his recent outstanding performance in martial arts, he is to be commended on his training, attitude and discipline. This is what Sonny had to say.

“On Sunday 8th March I did a competition in Jujitsu. I did three fights and won all of them by points. I received a gold medal.”

BIKE / SCOOTER SECURITY AND SAFETY

It is fantastic that so many of our families choose to walk or ride their bike/scooter to school. Although the bike racks are locked during the day, there are periods of time when they are open. We strongly advise families to add to the security by using a lock to secure their bikes and scooters to the railings. Students need to walk their bicycles and scooters onto and off the school grounds. This is for the safety of both the pedestrians and the bicycle / scooter users. It is also apparent that some students aren’t wearing a helmet. One of our expected behaviours at Craigie Heights is to wear a helmet when on a bike or a scooter. It’s also recommended you lock up your bike or scooter!
