The project is expected to serve 500 homeless participants (100 per year) during the five-year project period. ROLE: PROGRAM EVALUATION 3. PREVENTION PROGRAM TO REDUCE INJURY DISPARITIES AMONG LATINO DAY LABORERS National Institute on Minority Health Disparities (R24MD007975) 4/1/2013 – 1/1/15 $66,400 This study has the following aims: (1) Identify intervention priorities using a corner-based needs assessment to document occupational and psychosocial risk and protective factors that increase LDL risk for injury. (2) With the CAB, jointly design a culturally responsive and context appropriate OSHA 10-based safety intervention that also addresses psychosocial risks to reduce LDL injuries. (3) Collaboratively pilot a corner-level intervention and conduct an evaluation to assess the safety program's feasibility and acceptability as determined by the extent to which we can recruit, retain and follow-up LDL over the course of the study. Dr. Field’s primary contributions to the project will be to develop the content of the survey based on input from key stakeholders, oversee the integrity of survey administration and data collection, oversee analyses and reporting of results to key stakeholders.

PASOS 2 continues to allow us to translate this research into practice through implementation and evaluation in community settings in the Paso Del Norte region. Building upon the Center's previous training efforts in this region, this proposal will use a broadened recruitment approach that will hold numerous information sessions on MI and hold open training sessions and booster sessions to recruited individuals interested in joining a community of learning. We will also continue training efforts with one organization, El Paso County Community Supervision and Corrections Department (EPCCSCD) who has committed to providing MI training to their supervision officers. This study will examine the contribution of the “teachable moment” or “sentinel event” on drinking outcomes following brief motivational intervention by conducting a grounded theory analysis of the lived experience of sentinel events among adult heavy drinking men previously admitted to a Level 1 Trauma Center due to injury. The proposed study will utilize existing data from 27 in-depth individual interviews with adult men who were recently hospitalized in a Level 1 Trauma Center for treatment of an injury, and were identified as heavy drinkers. The primary aim of this study is to compare the effectiveness of Targeted Medication Therapy Management (TMTM) to Standard Medication Counseling (SMC) in community pharmacy for: (1) reducing opioid medications misuse and (2) activating patients to engage in care and improve health conditions associated with opioid medication misuse. This study will produce a manualized TMTM intervention protocol for broad and rapid dissemination across the US to enable community pharmacists to improve and safeguard patient health. In this comparative effectiveness study, we will examine the efficacy of a culturally-adapted BMI in a community hospital setting where at-risk, heavy-drinking Mexican-origin men who are unlikely to have sought formal treatment for alcohol problems present for medical treatment of an alcohol-related injury. We will randomize 600 heavy-drinking Mexican-origin men admitted to a community hospital setting for medical treatment of an alcohol-related injury to receive a either a non-adapted brief motivational intervention (NA-BMI) or a culturally adapted brief motivational intervention (CA-BMI). We hypothesize that by accounting for culturally relevant risk (i.e., acculturative stress) and protective factors (i.e., familism) of heavy drinking among Latinos, CA-BMI will more effectively improve patient outcomes. The study will increase the knowledge base with regard to the effectiveness of brief intervention among injured patients with drug use problems and, thereby, provide the ACS with the necessary evidence base to encourage trauma care screening, brief intervention and referral for treatment for drug use problems. Additionally, this study will evaluate the effects of the initial drinking assessment, through including a delayed-assessment control group. After an initial screen, 350 students at the University of Texas at Dallas who report at least one heavy (i.e., “binge”) episode during the previous two weeks will be randomized to: (1) Ml with feedback, (2) Ml without feedback, (3) Mailed feedback only, (4) Assessment only, or (5) Delayed assessment only. Ml sessions will be delivered by trained and supervised “peer” counselors. Participants will be assessed via a secure internet site at baseline, 3, 6 and 12 months (12 months only for the Delayed-assessment group), with primary outcome measures including self-reported quantity and frequency of drinking, and drinking related problems.
