In this comparative effectiveness study, we will examine the efficacy of a culturally-adapted BMI in a community hospital setting where at-risk, heavy-drinking Mexican-origin men who are unlikely to have sought formal treatment for alcohol problems present for medical treatment of an alcohol-related injury. We will randomize 600 heavy-drinking Mexican-origin men admitted to a community hospital setting for medical treatment of an alcohol-related injury to receive a either a non-adapted brief motivational intervention (NA-BMI) or a culturally adapted brief motivational intervention (CA-BMI). We hypothesize that by accounting for culturally relevant risk (i.e., acculturative stress) and protective factors (i.e., familism) of heavy drinking among Latinos, CA-BMI will more effectively improve patient outcomes. This grant is a randomized clinical trial evaluating the effectiveness of brief advice (BA), brief motivational intervention with feedback (BMI), and brief motivational intervention with feedback and booster (BMI+B) among injured patients with drug problems. The study will increase the knowledge base with regard to the effectiveness of brief intervention among injured patients with drug use problems and, thereby, provide the ACS with the necessary evidence base to encourage trauma care screening, brief intervention and referral for treatment for drug use problems. ROLE: PRINCIPAL INVESTIGATOR

12. MULTIDISCIPLINARY APPROACH TO REDUCE INJURY & ALCOHOL USE NATIONAL INSTITUTE ON ALCOHOL ABUSE AND ALCOHOLISM (R01-AA015439) 9/30/2006 – 8/31/2011 $2,547,941

This study examined the added value of a booster session as part of a brief motivational intervention to reduce binge drinking and its consequences in the trauma care setting. The study extends current findings regarding brief intervention with injured patients to include an evaluation of the treatment referral and harm reduction components.
