ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

Research Focus

Dr. Pollack is the Katey Ayres Endowed Associate Professor in the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health’s Department of Health Policy and Management and the School of Nursing. He has a joint appointment in the School’s Department of Epidemiology and in the School of Medicine’s Division of General Internal Medicine and is a core member of the Institute for Health and Social Policy. Clinically, he practices as a primary care physician in the Johns Hopkins Outpatient Center where he provides longitudinal care to a panel of patients.

His research focuses on two areas. The first is around social determinants of health with an emphasis on housing policy, including issues related to neighborhood context and housing mobility. Housing mobility programs help families move from areas of concentrated poverty to neighborhoods with greater socioeconomic diversity. In a multiple PI R01, Dr. Pollack is investigating whether the Baltimore housing mobility program improves asthma symptoms and reduces allergen exposures. Through a research partnership from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) and a grant from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, Dr. Pollack linked Medicaid and hospital all-payer data to the landmark Moving To Opportunity and investigated the long term impact of housing mobility and neighborhood poverty on adult and child health care utilization. He currently has funding from NICHD to examine the relationship between the low income housing tax credit and health. Previously, he co-led a project funded by the MacArthur Foundation which leveraged a natural experiment to study social networks among families who receive housing assistance. He has been asked to present his work on social determinants of health to policy makers at HUD, was selected to edit a special issue of a HUD journal called Cityscapes on the connection between housing and health (July 2018), has issued several issue briefs to inform policy makers about the connection between housing and health, and has testified at housing-related hearings at the municipal and state-levels. He currently works as a part-time contractor at HUD in their Office of Policy Development & Research working on issues related to connection between housing and health.

The second area is cancer health services research, with a particular interest in social networks and health equity. He was the recipient of a career development award from the National Cancer Institute (co-sponsored by the Office of Behavioral and Social Sciences Research) that used network analytic techniques to examine physician patient-sharing relationships. These investigations used SEER-Medicare claims data to construct physician networks for men with localized prostate cancer and examined variation in the type and quality of care that men receive. He co-led a R21 that collected and analyzed survey data to study how provider social networks and clinical experience influence recommendations for breast cancer screening. He has collaborated on other studies using physician-patient sharing networks to investigate the adoption and de-implementation of new technologies. He has also been the site-PI for Movember Foundation initiatives to improve survivorship care.
