Our process starts with producing the swab fiber, composed of a unique porous microchannel “fiber-within-fiber” design structure. The swab fiber is then applied to tips to produce a versatile, high-performance brush-like swab without an inner fabric or core to collect specimens. Further proprietary manufacturing processes result in multi-length, “split-end” fibers that create a greater overall surface area and tension for more rapid elution and maximal sample preservation. Engineered for purity and maximal cell yield with a small sample size, PurFlock Ultra® is ideal for PCR, molecular assays, DFA testing, forensic applications, and direct antigen testing. Constructed from fiber technology that results in higher purity than traditional nylon swabs, PurFlock Ultra® swabs provide the greatest balance between purity and sample collection efficiency on the market. COTTON-TIPPED APPLICATORS

Puritan uses only cotton grown in the U.S. We card and

coil our own high-quality, USP-grade cotton fiber to

ensure consistency of the formed cotton tip on each and

every applicator. Select from a variety of applicator sizes,

tip shapes, and shaft materials to meet medical and diag-

nostic needs. Our non-sterile products are available in

autoclavable bags for sterile applications.

POLYESTER-TIPPED APPLICATORS

Synthetic applicator tips are made of medical-grade

polyester that we card ourselves. They’re non-absorbent

and contain no fatty acids or latent sugars, making them

ideal in laboratory settings and for inclusion in many

diagnostic kits.

RAYON-TIPPED APPLICATORS

Ideal for diagnostic specimen collection, wound treat-

ment, and application of medicines. Tips are made from

the finest USP grades of rayon fiber, which we card in

our Guilford facility.

CALGISWAB® CALCIUM ALGINATE-TIPPED

APPLICATORS

These speciality applicators are tipped with calcium

alginate fiber, an organic material derived from seaweed,

carded in Puritan’s facility to assure conformance with

medical device specifications. Calgiswab applicators are

available in a variety of tip sizes and shaft materials

and dimensions. Commonly used for specimen collection

in pediatrics, E.N.T., asymptomatic GC, public health

microbiology, ophthalmology, food pathology, and other

areas where fine tips, flexible shafts, or biodegradable

fibers are desirable.

FOAM-TIPPED APPLICATORS

These sterile applicators are ideal for a variety of clinical

and DNA applications. Tips are made of medical-grade

foam. Available in a range of shapes and shaft materials.

WOUND MEASUREMENT DEVICES

The soft foam-tipped applicator is flexible to conform to

wound shape and features a metric rule for easy measur-

ing. Perfect for forensics, emergency rooms, long-term

care, and more. Available in sterile or non-sterile.

POPULE® SELF-SATURATING SWABS

Only Puritan can offer you the convenience of swab and

solution in one neat unit — and it’s non-glass for safety.

what you need. Our Popules can be filled with virtually

any type of liquid.

TRANSPORT TUBE AND CAP-SHURE®

APPLICATORS

Each of our transport tube applicators has a sterile, rigid

tube that protects the swab and keeps it dry before and

after sampling, plus there’s a label on the tube for easy

identification. The swab can be secured in the handle end

or simply placed in the tube. Polyester-tipped applicators

in transport tubes are available in single and double packs,

and foam-tipped applicators are available in single packs.

Other fibers can be custom ordered.

Our cotton-tipped Cap-Shure applicators are well-suited

for forensic or clinical use. The Cap-Shure swab comes

with either a wooden or plastic handle. The aerated cap

allows the sample to air dry and protects it from contami-

nation. It’s ideal for collecting minute samples at crime

scenes or for use as a buccal swab anytime PCR will be used.

TONGUE DEPRESSORS

Puritan tongue depressors come in plain, wrapped,

flavored, and sterile styles. Tongue depressors can serve

many functions, from a clinical diagnostic aid to a stirrer

for liquid medicines. Customized imprinting and packaging

available for some styles.

CUTICLE/ORANGE STICKS

Single- and double-bevel ends offer plenty of choices to

suit a variety of needs. Excellent for long-term care

and podiatry practices. Good as an all-purpose stick in

most types of clinical, diagnostic, and forensic settings,

CERVICAL SCRAPERS

For many years, healthcare professionals have been rely-

ing on Puritan for standard wooden cell collection devices,

such as cervical scrapers. Along with our more recently

developed cytology collection devices, we offer the

clinician a complete line of single-use wooden products.

MICROFIBER-TIPPED APPLICATORS

Soft, finely woven, lint-free microfiber cloth effectively

traps small particles and is low in NVRs. The twisted pole

tip, specifically designed for fiber optics, is thermally

affixed to the shaft without contaminating adhesives and

can be easily spun during the cleaning process. Microfiber

is excellent for optics and lenses.

POLYESTER-TIPPED APPLICATORS

Non-abrasive, lint-free polyester provides good wear-

resistance. These applicators can be used with deionized

water, isopropyl alcohol, or solvents. Our laundered poly-

ester is low in NVRs and particle generation.

FOAM-TIPPED APPLICATORS

Soft, lint-free foam tips feature reticulated open cells

for superior entrapment of small particles. Most styles

are thermally bonded to the shaft, using no contaminating

adhesives. Our new glass-filled polypropylene handles

provide extra rigidity.

PACKAGING QUANTITY CODES

Our packaging codes work from the outside in. The first number represents the outermost package — this may be a case, a box, or other container. Next is what you’ll find when you open the outer packaging — bags, wrappers, tubes, etc. Finally we get to the heart of the packaging — how many swabs are grouped together. Some examples follow:

10/50 = 10 bags of 50 swabs per bag, per case.

10/10/100 = 10 boxes of 10 bags per case, 100 swabs per bag.

10/100/1 = 10 boxes of 100 swabs with each swab individually wrapped or in a tube.

WHITE HANDLE & TIP,

CLEAR VIAL

There are often times when you do

a test to get an immediate result —

or at least an indicator that a

particular sample should go to the

lab for more extensive testing.

That’s why all the swabs in our

environmental line have white

handles and tips and are packaged

in a clear plastic vial. Reactions —

even small, early reactions — are

visible, saving you time and effort.

CATCH & RELEASE

It’s just common sense. The more

sample you can pick up the more

accurate the results. That’s why

Puritan worked so hard to maximize

the collection surface for our

environmental swabs. The tip fibers

act like a “fishing net” to catch and

hold more than enough material

for accurate testing.

At the same time, these fibers readily

release sample material once the

swab is inserted into media. Catch

are known for.

PADDLE STRUCTURE

The EnviroMax® and EnviroMax

Plus® have oversized tips with a

rigid paddle-like structure within

the foam.

This gives the tip stability and

makes it easy to reach into crev-

ices where just foam may bunch

up, crush, or fold over.

These were inspired by a customer

in the food production industry

where large pieces of equipment

with varying surface terrain need

sampling.

TIGHT SPACE FIT

ESK® Sampling Kit swabs, on the

other hand, are small. Many times

you’ll want to collect sample

material from corners, cracks,

and crannies. The swab is attached

to the cap, giving you extra,

rigid handle length for firm control

over movement of the swab.

When you’re finished, you simply

replace the swab and cap tightly.

The tube is pre-filled with a

standard or custom solution of

your choice.

ENVIROMAX® (DRY) AND ENVIROMAX PLUS® (PRE-MOISTENED) This part of our environmental line includes larger swabs — you can specify a dry swab kit or one with a pre-moistened swab. These are an excellent choice for sample collection on larger surfaces. Products below shown at 45% of actual size.

Our PurFlock swabs are a great example. There’s a wide selection of standard material and patented HydraFlock® and PurFlock Ultra® tips, and many handle types (some with molded breakpoints). All models come sterile or non-sterile. Custom orders and configurations are always welcome.

Safe, sterile specimen transport. No matter which swab(s) you choose, all of our transport systems include a round-bottom tube made from virgin polypropylene resin, which will securely hold the swab, maintaining a safe and sterile environment.

Puritan HydraFlock® — The evolution of flocked swab technology

Puritan’s proprietary HydraFlock® swabs are composed of multi-length, “split-end” fibers. Unlike traditional perpendicular flocked swabs of homogeneous nylon composition, our patented design interweaves hundreds of polyester threads into each individual high-density fiber. As a result, HydraFlock® swabs have a greater overall surface area for specimen collection and interstitial pockets within fiber strands for more rapid elution and maximal sample preservation. Recent scientific tests confirmed that Puritan HydraFlock® swabs provide the most efficient absorption and elution on the market.
