The Champaign Park District listened to your responses from the last citizen survey and put your preferences into action with an exciting building program, new trails and natural areas, and fantastic new creative programming.

The Virginia Theatre auditorium restoration will be complete this spring bringing the Theatre to her original glory. Original 1921 ceiling murals were discovered and are being restored along with 24k gold plate and aluminum plate and the Theatre will put its best foot forward in April welcoming film critic Roger Ebert back into the fold. A combination of grants, donations and museum tax dollars has made this outstanding project possible.

Additionally, the Park District received a $2.5 million Park and Recreation Construction Facilities grant to replace the Leonhard Recreation Center and the 35,000 square foot facility will be under construction this spring while our newest park – Sunset Ridge Park – is completed with a walking path, skate area and sledding hill.

And while the weather still keeps you indoors, please note the new innovative programming for school’s out days, aerobics, dance, and tennis, as well as our sports leagues to keep the entire family active and fit for the new year.

We welcome your input and encourage you to enjoy all the Park District has to offer. Champaign Park District – Your Place to Play!

Bobbie H. Herakovich Newton H. Dodds Executive Director Park Board President

The Champaign Park District is a special district of local government with its own financial and legal responsibilities. It is governed by five elected residents of Champaign who give their services to the community. The Park Board holds its regular meetings on the second Wednesday of each month at 7pm at the Bresnan Meeting Center, 706 Kenwood Road. Residents are invited to attend and are welcome to make suggestions or comments to improve the programs or facilities offered. The Champaign Park District’s 58 parks total over 576 acres. Thirteen facilities are available for a wide variety of recreational opportunities.

The mission of the Champaign Park District is

to provide quality parks and recreation for

all ages in our community.

Destination DanceAges 18+Looking for something cool to do with your honey for Valentine’s Day, but lack imagination or time to plan? Impress them with a scrumptious dinner, dancing and the chance to win a trip to somewhere in the continental United States! There is a catch: the destination is a surprise, so pack for anything because you will leave during the event. Last year’s location was South Beach, Florida!

The winner, along with his/her cohort (both people must be registered) will be given hotel accommodations for the evening and fly to an unknown destination the next morning. Once at the location, there will be a fun activity planned on Saturday, then you will fly back to Champaign on Sunday. The winner receives round trip airfare, hotel accommodations, activity and some cab fare. They will also be taken to the hotel in an SUV stretch limo! Even if you don’t win the trip, you’ll get a fabulous meal, dancing and the opportunity to win awesome door prizes at a very affordable price.

Important: When registering, you and your partner must use your legal names as airline tickets will be purchased with your names on them in the event that you win. You will need to show your driver’s license or passport to check in for the dance. Must be present to win grand prize or any door prizes.

The Amazing Bike Race!Formerly Race the Greenspace (RTG), The Amazing Bike Race is an adventure race that leads teams on an 8-10 mile course through and around Champaign Park District parks and facilities. Think of it as the Park District’s version of the Amazing Race… on bikes!

In The Amazing Bike Race, teams of 2-4 people solve clues which then lead them to checkpoints where they’ll face mental or physical challenges. As you work to solve clues, you may use smartphones or call smart friends, but it’s up to you to figure out the best way to get to the next checkpoint. All members of your team must be assembled before you begin any physical or mental challenge.

To navigate between the checkpoints, you must bicycle (helmets required). No forms of transportation other than bicycles will be allowed – this includes automobiles, taxis, motorcycles, scooters, flying carpets, public transportation, or private jets. Bike racks are not guaranteed at any of the stops, so be sure you bring your own bike lock and think ahead about bike parking.

Childcare: Want to race but not sure who’ll watch your little ones? Check out our “Parent’s Morning Out” program! We’ll make sure your little ones are happy and having fun while you’re on the race course.

Prizes: Costumes are encouraged and prizes will be awarded for the team with the best costumes along with the top three finishing teams.

FAQ:

* We will begin clearing the course at 12p if any teams have not finished by that time.

* There will be no refunds granted after 3/22/13 for any reason. We race rain or shine, but we won’t race in lightning or thunder. Significant weather delays may result in cancellation of the race. Partial refunds may be issued if we have to cancel the race due to weather.

* Each individual participant must sign a waiver for this event. No one under the age of 12 will be allowed to register for this event. Anyone between the ages of 12 to 14 must be accompa-nied by a supervising adult registered on the same team.

* Your team name, a valid email address, and a valid cell phone number must be indicated on the registration form for crucial pre-race information, race day weather updates, and race day emergency communication.

With a new ‘line-array’ of speakers suspended from her ceiling (as well as all the amplifiers, processors, motors, cables and under-balcony “fill” speakers that support such a system), the Virginia will more efficiently be able to host major concert events like Bill Cosby, John Prine, BB King, Tommy Emmanuel, The Capitol Steps, Alison Krauss and Union Station, and so many more.

NEW DIGITAL PROJECTORThe Virginia Theatre must soon purchase a digital cinema projection system or face an uncertain future as the film industry converts to the new format. With a new digital system in place, the Virginia will continue to be able to show the latest movies at the lowest prices, while adding to its programming specially televised simulcasts and allowing renters of the facility use of this cutting edge technology for business presentations and meetings.

Current industry estimates are that most new movies will be released solely in digital format as early as 2014, with 35mm prints difficult or impossible to obtain from that point forward. Film presentation has been central to the programming of the Virginia Theatre since it opened on December 28, 1921. So much of what the Virginia does will be affected should the theatre not be able to make the leap to digital. The Virginia has to supplement its current 35mm film projectors with a new digital projector so it can:

• show new film titles year-round• program special event films no longer

available in 35mm• continue to grow and expand the

reach of its popular ‘Reel Deals’ discount movie series offering inexpensive second-run films at the low admission price of $3

• increase the scope of the successful News-Gazette Film Series of classic (both archival and contemporary) films

• better serve the Roger Ebert Film Festival, now entering its 15th year as the signature event for the Virginia Theatre (11 out of the 12 pictures featured at the 2012 Ebertfest were on digital media)

• avoid the expense of renting costly, digital equipment

• offer live simulcasts of television shows, performing arts, sporting events and special events

Once complete—and with your help—the Virginia Theatre will again stand proud in the heart of downtown Champaign, returning to the glory of her earliest years as she presents the best contemporary family entertainment with the finest state-of-the-art equipment. Help the Virginia take her place as a cultural hub for our creative community. Make a difference and donate today!

Leave a LegacyIn the spring of 2012, the Champaign Park District launched the largest renovation project yet for the Virginia Theatre since taking ownership of the historic facility in 2000. Major components of the current project include upgrades of the electrical and stage systems, restoration of the paint and plasterwork, and replacement of the seats. But due to the scope and cost of the project, a number of key upgrades to the theatre had to be excluded from this phase of renovation, and so the Champaign Parks Foundation is seeking funds to support the following unfunded priorities for the Virginia Theatre:

The philosophy behind the youth sports program is to provide an atmosphere that focuses on fun, opportunity, sportsmanship and instruction. Sports can play a positive role in our children’s development, fostering physical skills and emotional maturity.

Our children should have a place where they can have fun participating in organized activities in a healthy, safe environment. We strive to provide quality instruction in the fundamentals of the sport while emphasizing fun and sportsmanship over winning. By creating a posi-tive experience for the children we hope to encourage a lifetime of involvement.

You can help. We need the cooperation and assistance of parents and coaches to promote and demonstrate these values.

3.0 This player can place shots with moderate success, can sustain a rally of slow pace but is not comfortable with all strokes, lacks control when trying for power.

3.5 This player has achieved stroke dependability and direc-tion on shots within reach, including forehand and back-hand volleys, but still lacks depth and variety, seldom double faults and occasionally forces errors on the serve.

4.0 This player has dependable strokes on both forehand and backhand sides, has the ability to use a variety of shots including lobs, overheads, approach shots and volleys, can place the first serve and force some errors, is seldom out of position in a doubles game.

5.0 This player has good shot anticipation, frequently has an outstanding shot or exceptional consistency around which a game may be structured, can regularly hit win-ners or force errors off short balls, can successfully exe-cute lobs, drop shots, half volleys and overhead smashes, has good depth and spin on most second serves.

Champaign Bark DistrictLocation: Southeast Corner of Windsor and Rising RoadHours: Open daily from dawn to dusk seven days per week year round

The Champaign Bark District is a 7-acre space for your dog to run off-leash and interact with other dogs and humans. This park features a 4 foot fence, double-gated entry area, separate areas for large and small dogs, parking lot, drinking fountains, and dog waste stations.

Bark District MembershipDog Park membership carries with it responsibilities to all Dog Park users and the public at large. Not all dogs are good candidates for Dog Park play and interaction with a wide cross section of dogs. If your dog is shy about meeting new people, children, or dogs, it might not be a good candidate for the Dog Park. In addition, Dog Park users must be able to maintain control over their dogs even when off leash. All dogs at the Dog Park should be responsive to their owners’ calls.

Purchase a one-year membership for your dog at the Bresnan Meeting Center, or Springer Cultural Center. Users found without proper membership tags will be asked to leave and may forfeit future park privileges. Bark District memberships are reciprocal with Urbana Park District’s dog park, so your membership is valid at both dog parks.

Visitors may enter by paying a $5 admission fee at the park. The Champaign Park District staff monitors the dog park regularly to ensure that park users are properly registered and identified. Users found without proper registration will be asked to leave and may forfeit any future park privileges.

Requirement for MembershipObtain the following information – it is required to complete your membership registration.

1. County registration form (or other proof of rabies vaccination) Current vaccination record from the vet (proof of distemper vaccination)

2. Pay the membership fee. Resident and nonresident rates apply. See page 62 for infor-mation about resident and nonresident rates and the reciprocal agreement with Urbana Park District. Membership is for one calendar year (January 1 to December 31). Fees are not pro-rated.

Our Irish Dance instructors are championship level dancers from the Sullivan School of Irish Dance, Mayer School of Irish Dance, and Trinity Academy of Irish Dance in Chicago. The ballet accompanists are professionally trained pianists with specialties in performance, theory, composition, and more. The expertise of both the instructors and accompanists greatly enhances the quality of the school.

Royal Academy of Dance Syllabus Classes

Only classes offered this session are listed. For a complete listing of class descriptions,

please see our website at www.champaignparkdistrict.com/programs/dance.htm

Supplemental Technique ClassesPre-Primary and Primary (years 1 & 2 of training)Ages 6-7These syllabi develop the student’s physical skills, stamina, creativity, expression, and musicality using a range of sounds and musical styles. This strong foundation prepares students for a successful transition to more formal ballet classes. In both Pre-Primary and Primary, students, through participation and practice, should be able to respond to the elements of music and perform expressively, while demonstrating use of appropriate movement dynamics, coordination, elevation, and awareness of space. These classes begin in September only.

Grades 1–3 (years 3 – 5 of training)Ages 8-10The syllabi of Grades 1–3 will provide students with training that will encourage the development of an appropriate and sound technique, relevant for the ballet world of today. Each year of training identifies and teaches the necessary skills that result in secure technique such as core stability, weight placement, turn-out and line, while continuing to recognize and reward the student’s awareness of artistry and dynamics. Musically inspired exercises and dances will motivate students, and will promote a joy in movement. Elements of Hungarian and Russian folk dances will be taught as well as fundamentals of modern dance movement. Character skirts and shoes are required.

Grades 4–5 (years 6 & 7 of training)Ages 11-12Students will be expected to demonstrate consolidated technical skills, and an increased range of movements and sequences of increased length and complexity. They should also show a clear understanding of the mechanics and purpose of the required vocabulary. Students should show the ability to sustain an appropriate sensitivity to varying musical qualities. Pirouettes should become refined and strong, and speed in allegro work will increase. Russian character work will become more polished in Grade 4. Polish character work will be introduced in Grade 5. Character skirts and shoes are required.

Grade 6 (year 8 of training)Ages 13 & upArtistry becomes a more important element in this level. Most of the centre work could be considered small solos. Polish Court style of character work will be taught. Character skirt and shoes are required, as well as a mid-calf length chiffon skirt. Pointework will be incorpo-rated into this class if the student has met the guidelines set by the Dance Arts School staff.

Grade 7 (year 9 of training)Ages 14 & upAlong with the classical ballet training, a vocabulary of Hungarian Court character work and style will be taught so that in reaching Grade 8, the student will easily recognize some of the steps when watching traditional productions of Swan Lake, Sleeping Beauty, and Coppelia. Pointework will be incorporated into this class if the student has met the guidelines set by the Dance Arts School staff.

The Dance Arts School staff strongly encourages pre-pointe shoes or pointe shoes (if student has met the guidelines) in Grades 5-8. Regular, leather soft shoes will be needed for Examinations. Practice tutus are encouraged in Grades 5-8.

Creative Movement for ages 3–4Our Creative Movement classes are for our youngest dancers. Jumping in puddles and soaring like birds, the students will move through their imagination in a fun filled class that will strengthen their gross motor skills. Classwork will also include exercises to help with coordination, body and spatial awareness. Students may wear leotards with proper ballet shoes or comfortable clothing with bare feet. Hair should be pulled off the face into a ponytail.

Creative Movement for ages 5–6Fine motor skills are addressed as the students become more confident in their movement. This class will incorporate fundamentals of formal dance training with marching, jumping, and skipping with stretched feet. Imagination will take flight as the students learn to dance a story.

Please note: All students ages 5 and up must wear proper Capezio or Bloch full-soled ballet slippers, a solid color leotard, and pink tights or cotton ankle socks. Hair must be pulled off the face into a ballet bun.

Junior Company*This class is a “freework/non-syllabus” class for students ages 10 to 12 with 5 to 7 years of training.

Senior Company*This class is a “freework/non-syllabus” class for students ages 13 and up with 8 + years of training. There is an optional ½ hour of pointework at the end of the technique class.

Tree & Flower Programs

Growing TogetherThe Growing Together Tree is a program for parents or soon-to-be parents to adopt a tree that has been planted in a park during the year of your new child’s birth. Together they grow: child and tree. You will receive an infant t-shirt and a map with your tree’s location.

Adopt-A-TreeWe invite tree lovers to “Adopt-A-Tree” in their neighborhood park. A tree can be adopted by individuals, families, scout troops, church groups, or service organizations. Adoption can involve watering the tree, spreading mulch, or keeping an eye open for vandalism or disease. You will receive a map with your tree’s location.

Retirement TreePlant a living, growing retirement gift for the newly retired friend, relative, or co-worker to celebrate a successful career and a new phase of life. The retiree will receive a map with the tree’s location and a certificate. Call for current fees.

Memorial TreesA tree is planted in memory of a loved one. Call for current fees.

Flower IslandsThe Flower Island program is a cooperative beautification effort between local businesses and the Park District. This unique program allows businesses to have a personal flower bed near their site and to assist with the sponsorship of beds on public property (e.g. parks, schools, library, right-of-ways, etc.)

Each year the local business pays a fee to the Park District. Half this amount contributes to the cost of their bed(s) and the remain-der is used for the Flower Islands on public property. Hence, they enhance the beauty of the community twice. Services included for the annual fee are design, bed preparation, planting, maintenance, and fall removal.

Enrollment: September – November   Questions: Horticulture Supervisor, 217-398-2591

Tree ProgramsChampaign Park District plants our program trees during the spring and fall. Spring tree examples include: Red Maple, River Birch, all Oaks, Canada Red Cherry, Red Bud. Fall examples include: Norway Maple, Sugar Maple, Hackberry, Locust. Call for current prices.

Deadline: Spring (February 1); Fall (August 15)Questions: Craig Kempher, 217-398-2591

The Adopt-A-Park program was developed by the Champaign Park District in 1982 after a class at Robeson Elementary School inquired about adopting the park near their school.

The purpose of the program is to encourage people in a park neighborhood to assume some responsibilities for their adopted park. This helps maintain and program the park above the level that the Champaign Park District is able to achieve on its own. Adopted parks build community support and often become the focal point of neighborhood activities. The park programs benefit both the Park District and the adopting group.

If you are interested in adopting a park or would like more information, please call 398-2550 or visit us at www.champaignparkdistrict.com.

Register at Bresnan Meeting Center only. Online registration not available for this program.

Fees: Non-Resident OptionProgram participants living outside the boundaries of the Champaign and Urbana Park Districts have an option of paying 50% more than the resident rates for each program registration or paying a yearly fee and the resident fee for each program.

The yearly fee is computed on the assessed valuation of the non-resident’s home. The yearly fee is this valuation multiplied by the current tax rate of the Champaign Park District. The term of the payment coverage is from May 1 to April 30 of the following year. A person wishing to pay the yearly fee should bring a copy of the most recent tax bill to the Bresnan Meeting Center for computation of the fee. To receive the same privilege, non-resident renters may pay a flat fee of $50.

The non-resident annual fee option is not available to persons residing adjacent to the Park District boundaries. They, however, have the option of annexing their property into the Champaign Park District.

Registration Dates Register in person at any Champaign Park District facility, by mail, or online at www.champaignparkdistrict.com. Champaign & Urbana Park District residents may begin registering immediately. Non-resident registration begins Monday, November 26, 2012.

Fees: Resident/ Non-Resident (R/NR)Residents living within the boundaries of the park district regularly support park facilities and programs through property taxes. People living within the Champaign and Urbana Park District boundaries pay the “resident (R)” fee. Persons residing outside these districts will pay 50% more than the resident rates – “non-resident (NR)”. Fees charged for programs are used to offset part of the costs for special instructors, facility costs, and program supplies.

MAIL-IN REGISTRATION TIPS

Dishonored ChecksA $25 service charge will be assessed on all checks returned by the bank for any reason.

Program Waiting ListsPrograms may fill. If this is the case, please ask to be placed on a waiting list.

Program ScholarshipsBecause some residents are unable to participate in recreation programs due to economic hardship, the Champaign Park District offers scholarships to reduce certain fees and charges.

Scholarship applicants are not guar-anteed fund availability, program registration, or choice of program location. Early applications are given priority. Applications are available at the Bresnan Meeting Center and can be mailed upon request. Need is the primary criterion upon which scholar-ship applicants are considered.

Child Care Resource Service (CCRS)CCRS helps income-eligible parents who are working and/or going to school to pay for their child care. Based on par-ents’ family size and income, working families whose incomes are at or below 50% of the state median income level may be eligible to apply. Processing can take up to 10 business days. Please pick up an application from CCRS.

Questions: Child Care Resource Service, 333-3252 or 1-800-325-5516

Program Cancellations/RefundsDay Camps: A chance to cancel from an all-day camp without paying more than the required deposit will only be given through five (5) business days before the start of the session. After that, the full fee will be charged to the participant and the spot in the class will be opened to those on the waiting list.

Preschool Programs with Monthly Billing: Two weeks notice in writing is required, or guardians are responsible for payment for the following month. More information is given in the Preschool Handbook.

All Other Programs: Refunds will be given only through the second meeting of any program, unless otherwise noted above. There will be a $5 service charge due to participant cancellation (per participant/per occurrence) unless otherwise noted.

Exceptions: If the District cancels a program due to minimum registration not being met, full refunds will be given. Pro-rated amounts will be refunded to partici-pants if a class is cancelled by the District after it has begun. If a participant experi-ences a medical problem which prohibits program participation, the refund will be a prorated amount based on the number of sessions remaining in the program.

IMPORTANT INFORMATIONChampaign Park District is committed to conducting its recreation programs and activities in a safe manner and holds the safety of participants in high regard. Champaign Park District continually strives to reduce such risks and insists that all participants follow safety rules and instructions that are designed to protect the participants’ safety. However, participants and parents/guardians of minors registering for Park District programs/activities must recognize that there is an inherent risk of injury when choosing to participate in recreational activities/programs.

You are solely responsible for determining if you or your minor child/ward are physically fit and/or skilled for the activities contemplated by this agreement. It is always advisable, especially if the participant is pregnant, disabled in any way or recently suffered illness, injury or impairment, to consult a physician before undertaking any physical activity.

WARNING OF RISKRecreational activities/programs are intended to challenge and engage the physical, mental and emotional resources of each participant. Despite careful and proper preparation, instruction, medical advice, conditioning and equipment, there is still a risk of serious injury when participating in any recreational activity/program. Understandably, not all hazards and dangers can be foreseen. Depending on the particular activity, participants must understand that certain risks, dangers and injuries due to inclement weather, slipping, falling, poor skill level or conditioning, careless-ness, horseplay, unsportsmanlike conduct, premises defects, inadequate or defective equipment, inadequate supervision, instruction or officiating, and all other circumstances inher-ent to indoor and outdoor recreational activities/programs exist. In this regard, it must be recognized that it is impos-sible to guarantee absolute safety.
