  • REIMAGINING HISTORY ICONIC COCKTAILS FROM HISTORY, REVISITED

  • The First Martini

One of the Knickerbocker’s most fabled legends is that the

martini was invented in its ornate barroom. British writer John Doxat

interviewed a guest who visited the Knickerbocker bar in 1912 and was served

an unfamiliar cocktail by the bartender, “a shadowy figure” supposedly named

    Martini di Arma di Taggia.

  • George M. Cohan

The Knickerbocker’s most famous resident was Broadway superstar George M.

Cohan. An actor, singer, dancer, composer, playwright, and producer. Cohan was an

entire talent show unto himself. Just 29 years old, with song writing credits like “Give My

Regards to Broadway” already under his belt, he was dubbed “the boy owner of the

American flag” by the New York Sun.

    F. Scott Fitzgerald lived at the Knickerbocker in 1919, writing his short story “Mr. Icky” in his room

upstairs. His wife, Zelda Sayre, frequented downstairs in the dining room. While

drinking, Scott was known to throw $20 and $50

bills around the bar like confetti.

WHISKEY / BOURBON RYE This whiskey has to have a mash content of at least 51% rye (which means it can’t be called bourbon) and, if aged for at least two years in new charred oak barrels, it earns the term of ‘straight rye’.

KENTUCKY BOURBON Kentucky Straight Bourbon has survived temperance, Prohibition and war, all the time refining its character and now enjoying a long-awaited renaissance. It must use 51-80% corn (supplemented by wheat, rye and/or barley); distill no higher than 80% abv; and put into new charred white-oak casks.
