COVID-19 RESPONSE TANZANIA WEEKLY UPDATE #3 27April-2 May, 2020 Situation Update As of 2nd May there are 480 confirmed COVID-19 cases including16 deaths; case fatality rate (CFR) is 3.8%. 375 of the cases including 13 deaths are in Tanzania Mainland and 105 cases including three deaths in Zanzibar. 6 more regions have reported cases in Mainland, making 24 out of 26 regions of Tanzania Mainland to have reported at least a case of COVID-19 with the majority of cases in Dar- es Salaam city. Source of infection of most of the cases reported cannot be established due to lack of appropriate information sharing, hence community transmission cannot be ruled out in Dar es Salaam City in Tanzania Mainland and Unguja-Zanzibar where a cumulative total of 220*** and 98 respectively have been reported. There is no new COVID-19 case reported yet as of today morning May 4th. The last report on 2nd May 2020, one death was reported in Zanzibar. COVID-19 one case occurred on 30/04/2020;the total number of COVID-19 deaths is five (5). The reported death, was a frontline health care worker, male and 54 years. In Zanzibar, health facilities are stretched beyond limit, and some workers are affected with the virus. WHO is in dialogue with Government to extend support to health providers. Challenges: Generally, the response in Tanzania has been facing several challenges including lack of transparency and health harming communications, leading to rumours and fear of the real situation. Situation Update As of 2nd May there are 480 confirmed COVID-19 cases including16 deaths; case fatality rate (CFR) is 3.8%. 375 of the cases including 13 deaths are in Tanzania Mainland and 105 cases including three deaths in Zanzibar.

KEY COVID 19 ACTIVITY ACHIEVEMENTS

To curb the impact of Covid 19 on children and caregivers Save the Children has rolledout training to Community mentors and facili-tators in 8 community on how to contain thespread of Covid 19 and also how parents canrelate to their children without being violent. A total of 88 mentors and facilitators in 8 shehias were reached.

Save the Children attended the Regional RCCEmeeting with WHO and select government anddistricts government counterparts, to support development of Covid19 work plan with a budget. Currently Dar es salaam has no budgetted work plan.

Save the Children provided technical support to themental Health and Psychosocial Support forum onalternative way(s) to help children with distress andimprove awareness on anxiety and fear triggered byCovid-19.Supported the District to develop a child protection work plan for host community with a specialemphasis on street children

Save the Children Lishe Endelevu program support-ed the Regional authorities to conduct Covid 19 awareness in two councils of Kondoa and KondoaTC by training health facilities at ward level. A total of 2,365 people were reached in both councils.

Save the Children used PA outreach for Covid-19 awareness raising to all 7 wards of Mbozi district. Shared VAC Prevention incidence reporting, distr-ibuted and posted IEC materials with COVID 19 messages to about 22,764 people. More than 9,000 people were reached in local markets (Mnadani) at Idiwili wards. Under our ECCD program, Save the Children has developed the final transcript of audio for first parenting session with Covid 19 messages.

As the government continues to encourage religiousgatherings,Save the Children has continued raising community awareness on hygiene, safety messagesand social distancing in Malinyi and Ulanga Districts.More emphasis was given to churches, markets andother mass gathering in rural areas where awarenessis still very limited. We have also continued to integrate COVID-19 aware-ness in the cooking and WASH demonstration. An estimated total of 22,859 people were reached.

Save the Children and UNICEF are in discussion with MOEST on activation of Education Cluster for Education in Emergency that will among other things strengthen coordination and collaboration among actors in response to COVID-19 Education. Efforts are being made in order for Save the Children and UNICEF to play their co-lead role.

Save the Children continues to work through TEN/MET secretariat to facilitate establishment of Education in Emergency Working Group. Save the Children is lobbying for a space in the government-led COVID-19 National Education Task Force to represent TEN/MET members’ recommendations.

Save the Children continues to air cartoons to conveymessages regarding child protection and COVID -19, last week the second cartoon was aired by ITV, a pri-vate station with the most watched evening news bulletinin Tanzania. The cartoon also went viral on social mediawhen was shared by with most NGOs and activists.ITV news bulletin is also live broadcasted via its YouTube channel which has more than 496K subscribers and Facebook live where as the page has a total of 2,325,369 page followers.
