Cover Story - Candace & Mike Paulino’s 1954 RoadsterProfile by Candace Paulino

I have been a car enthusiast of Corvettes and other Classic Cars for many years. My first Corvette was a 1968, which I only owned for two days. After driving it around, buying gas and insurance, I soon realized that I could not afford this car. I waited several years before

purchasing my second Corvette, this one was a 1979. When I divorced my first husband, he got that car, so I turned around and bought another Corvette. This was the infamous 1984, with the 4+3 transmission, which was expensive to maintain. I owned this car for about three years, then upgraded to a 1990 Corvette. I loved this car, and had it for several years. In the winter of 2002, my husband Mike and I found a 1999 Corvette in Spokane that I just had to have. I named this Corvette, “On Your Marque”, and the license plate is: ONYRMRK.

Just two months after purchasing the 1999 I finally, after eight years, arranged to purchase my dad's early all original 1954 Corvette. The 1954 is my pride and joy. However, Mike’s (my husband, my mechanic) love and joy of my cars is not as deeply-seated as mine.

I used to show our family's Corvette collection in the 1980's through the mid 90's, and once was the president of the car club in Burien. My dad still owns two 1959 Corvettes that are currently in Arizona. For the past 14 years I have not participated in any car clubs, shows, or meetings, and have only shown the 1954 one time. The one and only show was not enjoyable because we worked nights, weekends and holidays for these past many years. When we did show the car, we had worked the night before the show, then showed the 1954 all day, and went to work with no sleep. I was so miserable we have not shown the car since.

We regularly take the 1954 out on small drives around our area. This past summer we started having electrical gremlins, during which the car would just quit.

In October, we took the car to “Corvettes of Auburn” where they replaced the entire wiring harness, had the generator rebuilt, and replaced the voltage regulator. (Previously, the three side-draft Carter carburetors were rebuilt & synchronized, installed a NOS distributor with tach-drive, and rebuilt the cast iron power glide transmission.)

In July 2008, I lost my job at The Seattle Times due to the severe economic downturn in the newspaper industry. Recently I changed my career, and started as an insurance agent with State Farm in Kirkland (seeing that State Farm has always insured my Corvettes and the 1954). This career shift will allow me to show the 1954, and participate in other car club events and meetings.

We believe the 54 is now reliable to drive, and should be ready to show this year, and if something else should fail, I will be there with “ONYRMRK“ Get Set... Go!

Special thanks to CMCS Sponsors Lee Johnson Chevrolet and Speedway Chevrolet for arranging to have Reeves Callaway of Callaway Cars, Inc be a guest speaker at our April Meeting. Mr. Callaway and his company are an important part of the Corvette community, worldwide, and we were very fortunate to have him in attendance. This is another reason to attend meetings….you never know who might be there! We had a great turnout for the event and for the meeting…let’s keep it up!

A word about our sponsors. Lee Johnson Chevrolet and Speedway Chevrolet have been supportive in ways that most sponsors fall short. They have provided facilities for meetings and board meetings, financial support, and terrific enthusiasm for what we do as a club. Especially during these economic times, now is a great opportunity to support them when you need a new or used car, or service on your Corvette, or other cars. I can’t think of a better time to buy a car than during today’s deeply discounted prices and attractive financing and interest rates.

Speaking of the economic times I want to be sure that all CMCS members understand that even though most of our meeting and events include a member expense for dinner, lunch or breakfast, you are encouraged to attend even if you have other plans for a meal, or choose not to eat a meal. I am concerned that some folks may choose not to attend a meeting because they feel they need to spend money, which is NOT the case. We will try to publish the times the meetings start so you can plan accordingly.

As you know, our May meeting is a breakfast meeting in Factoria. We are planning a tour following the meeting through the countryside and end up at Speedway Chevrolet for the unveiling of the 2010 Camaro. This long awaited introduction should be really interesting and fun. The Camaro club(s) will be there too so it will be like a family reunion….without weird Uncle Harold!

With the parade season underway, planning going on for School Daze and improving weather (hopefully) it is starting to get exciting to be a Corvette owner. It’s time to get the cover off, change the oil, shine it up and get on the road. We’ll see you out there!

Please see the Speed Event Guidelines and the Vehicle Classification section for specific information regarding allowed modifications for both Stock and Prepared Classes. You are responsible for classifying your own car. This information is available at www.nwacconline.com in the Speed Events Guidelines section or at any NWACC-hosted or sanctioned autocross event. All classes have a Women’s Class (except Novice), however, women competitors may choose to enter any class for which their car qualifies.

TIME ONLY:

This class is for those people who don’t wish to run in a specific class. No NWACC Year-End points will be awarded.

Autocross Season Starts in Mayby Kevin Jewell

The first autocross of the season will be Sunday, May 17. Location is Sanderson Field (airport) in Shelton. The NWACC series is a Corvette only autocross with all local clubs invited to compete. Even non-NWACC clubs are invited to compete, but pay a higher event cost. CMCS is a NWACC member club, so we pay the lower cost. Most of the events this year will be in

Shelton, although there will be at least one autocross in Portland.

For those that want to make a weekend of it, you can stay at the Little Creek Casino and Hotel (800 667-7711). Or you can just leave early Sunday morning and meet us for breakfast about 6:30 am at Denny's, a couple miles from the airport. Day of event registration and tech inspection starts at 7:30 am, with first car out about 9:15. Go to the web site www.nwacconline.com to review the guidelines and classes. The event registration form should be posted (or soon will be) on the web site. Don't hesitate to ask questions of other club members. Tim and Mona Cox, Wes Holmes, and Kevin and Judy Jewell have all been regulars in the series the past few years. We would all be glad to help you enjoy this sport. There are other club members who have competed at individual events but not active for the entire series. There is a novice class for anyone wishing to try autocross competition for the first time. This is a fun class for new competitors that includes all Corvettes regardless of year or modification. Generally, you can enter as a novice for the first year or until you win an event. Once you win an event, you are obviously no longer a novice to the sport. The majority of the Corvettes that compete in all classes are stock, so generally these are not race cars, but daily drivers.

Convertibles do NOT require a roll bar. The autocross series gives convertible owners a chance to exercise their car and improve their car control abilities. You will be amazed at the level of handling possible from our Corvettes. So, is this the year that you are going to try something new? We would love to see you join us.

Last year a fair number of CMCS members attended this event in Yakima. It was a low key fun event. I offer to lead our CMCS caravan to Yakima this year. Caravan details will be available as the event nears. You can find the registration and details at www.yakimavalleyvettes.com.

The cost, if registered by 5/15/09, is only $55/couple. Included in that cost is the hospitality room Friday with beverages, lunch and dinner on Saturday, lunch on Sunday, plus all the other normal registration items.

The event concludes at a home in the hills overlooking Yakima that has enough lawn space to park 50+ cars. I understand that this year there will also be live music and they suggest we allow an hour or so more than we did last year to enjoy the music. Even so, I expect we would be home no later than 6 pm on Sunday.

This looks like a fun, close, relatively inexpensive Corvette event, so if you are interested, get your registration and hotel room booked.

The Membership Tachometerby Lorrie Montgomery

Our April 11th General Membership Meeting was held at our Sponsor, Speedway Chevrolet in Monroe. Speedway and Lee Johnson Chevrolet provided a nice social hour with Wine and Cheese followed by our meeting and Pizza Dinner compliments of CMCS. Our special guest was Reeves Callaway who signed cars, gave a great history of the Callaway Corvette and answered questions. Our other special guests were our 6 new members. Please welcome them all and make an effort to introduce yourself the next time you see them.

Leon Browning and his wife Rebecca Mowry live in Snohomish and drive a 2005 Daytona Sunset Orange Coupe. They would stop periodically at Speedway to look at the Corvettes and finally couldn't stand it any longer and got Joe Harvey to find just the perfect one. Besides enjoying their Corvette, horses are a big part of their lives. They have shown, bred and raised Quarter Horses for 20 years. Now he has 350 horses to take care of. Although Rebecca was unable to make the meeting, we'd like to welcome both of them as new members!

New Members

Sid and Vicki Thayer live in Lake Stevens and have a 2002 Torch Red Coupe. Sid admits that he's car crazy and loves anything to do with cars and racing. School Daze is made for Sid! He and Vicki love driving their Corvette and hitting as many casinos as they can. So, we know who will be the first in line when we do a casino tour. Vicki was not able to attend our meeting either, but we figured that since Sid was a nice guy, Vicki must be too. So, please help me welcome Sid and Vicki as new members!

50/50 Charity Fund DrawingBy Jack Goodman & Claudia Simmons

At our Monthly CMCS General Meeting 50/50 tickets are available for a dollar each. Half goes toward our scholarship fund for the Shoreline Community College Automotive Program. The remaining half goes to the lucky one holding the ticket number drawn. The more tickets bought the bigger the pot.

For the April 11 General Meeting at Speedway Chevrolet we collected $238.

$119 went to the winner Kevin Jewell.

$119 goes into the scholarship fund. Thank you for your participation.

This brings our membership to 245. You will notice that our membership number has gone down a bit. That is because March 31st was the deadline to renew your membership for 2009. So, if you are reading this on the web because you didn't get a newsletter, then it's time to send in your renewal as well.Until next month - Save the Wave

Terry and Karen Myers live in Everett and Drive a beautiful 2008 Crystal Red Coupe. They love Hawaii, and who doesn't in this 40-degree “spring” weather. They also enjoy racing and road tips, just not together though! Sounds like they've joined the right club. Again, Karen was not able to be at Saturday's meeting, but we set the tone by voting in all the husbands, so Karen was also voted in by acclamation. Please welcome both as new members of CMCS.

Welcome to the Club!

We look forward to meeting Rebecca, Vicki and Karen soon!

Candace & Mike Paulino joined CMCS at the March meeting, but Mike was not available. We got to meet him at the April meeting. They also provided the Cover Car for this OYM issue.

Vette Rides for VeteransBy Gary Main

On Sunday, June 14, 2009 we’ll join our friends in the Glass Odyssey Corvette Club on the first Vette Rides for Veterans event of 2009 at the Veterans Home at Retsil near Port Orchard, WA. This is our chance to once again give back a little to these Veterans who gave so much when duty

called. Here’s the plan: The CMCS group will DEPART from the parking lot @ Fry’s Electronics, 800 Garden Ave, Renton at 10:30am for the drive to Port Orchard. At noon we’ll meet up with the GOCC group for lunch at the Clubhouse Bar & Grill at 4215 SE Mile Hill Dr. in Port Orchard. We leave there about 1:15 for the short drive to the Veteran's home at Retsil where we’ll park the cars so the Veterans can walk around and enjoy them for a bit then give rides for all who want to go. There’s a brief course laid out that provides about a 10-15 minute ride. The route can be varied longer or shorter to accommodate the desires of our honored passengers. Maps will be provided. The course features some time along the waterfront, some time on straight country roads and, of course, some curves. The Veterans really get a charge out of blasting down the road and feeling real Corvette power. We’ll drive responsibly, of course, but the whole point of this exercise is to provide a bit of enjoyment to these Veterans and maybe help them to relive, if only briefly, a bit of their youth. Our job is to put a smile on the faces of those Veterans that will last until we come back in the fall to do it all again. Everybody wins on this one!Donations for the Veterans are encouraged. Please bring any good clothes, books, videos, or even Corvette related stuff that you no longer need that they might enjoy or have use for. Gift cards and/or cash works, too!Remember, this isn’t just “guy” thing. Many of the Veterans living at the home are women & they’ll be looking for rides, too. We often see some of our members sporting “Real Women Drive Corvettes” shirts at CMCS events. Hopefully, some of those “Real Women” will be a part of this event, too. Have questions? Want to come along? CMCS contact for this event is: [email protected]

Vintage Races Car Corral Opportunityby Kevin Jewell

The Pacific Northwest Historics Vintage Races return to Pacific Raceway July 3-5, 2009. The featured marque is Chevrolet and the guest celebrity is Vic Edelbrock. Vic is a frequent participant at the races with his 1963 Z06 Corvette.

This event raises a large amount of money for Children's Hospital each year, as all the net proceeds are donated to Children's.

We have the opportunity to participate in the car corral on Sunday, July 5. Participants are also eligible to enter the parade laps during the lunch break, so if you have never been on the track, the parade laps give you a couple of lower speed laps to view the track as the race drivers see it.

These Vintage Races are quite the experience. You have full admission to the pits, in fact you are encouraged to tour the pits, view the race cars up close and talk to the racers and all the vendors. There are many viewing areas of the track where you can watch the “back section” since you are not limited to the bleachers. So it is a good idea to bring your folding chair.

There is no cost to enter the car corral, but each club is limited to a maximum of 20 cars, so it will be first come, first served. The cost of admission is $25/person. Children 7-16 years of age are $5/day. If you want to attend all three days the cost is $40/person, but CMCS will be in the car corral only on Sunday.

Send me a check (payable to CMCS) for the appropriate number of tickets and I will coordinate the club's participation. The deadline for receipt of your order is June 1.

Remember that I must mail in the requests, receive the tickets, and distribute them to you, so we cannot wait until the last minute to turn in our request. Also, in past years, clubs that waited too long were not allowed to participate, as the car corral is limited to 250 cars.

Please send your order to:Kevin Jewell, 12120 202 Ave NE, Woodinville, WA 98077

CMCS Clothing - Order NowWe also want to remind everyone that you are always welcome to place your order for club jackets, blue denim shirts, or baseball caps at any meeting. The traveling suitcase brought to every meeting has all the sizes for you to try. Payment is due at the time the order is placed. Spring is coming, so see Mona Cox to place your order soon.

40 LAPS AGO: May ‘69. President Frank Olsheski gets the monthly meeting started after the dinner at Brads in Kent. Ron & Dee McDuffie are voted into membership; a new membership roster will be printed out for distribution at the next club meeting. It was suggested that the Telephone Committee inform the membership of upcoming scheduled general membership meetings, as these dates are often early in the months where the club’s

newsletters often do not arrive until after the meeting dates. Reports on past club events with an autocross were presented, the only negative expressed was from the Southcenter management that was not happy with the painted white lines left on their lots from our autocross event. Whidbey Island tour was reviewed by Frank that saw a number of members and non-members attend. Suggestions on future tours included Mount Rainier, Orcus Island, and, the Viking Cruise. A letter will be sent to Corvette News indicating CMCS’s 100% Corvette ownership. Newsletter editor notes there will be a change in the cover and back, black and white pictures are needed of member’s Corvettes, and, there will be an ad from Alan Green Chevrolet, our main sponsor, in each of future newsletters. The club will purchase seven to fourteen additional jackets, where 30 orders are already confirmed.

30 LAPS AGO: May '79. President Ernie Kahler conducts the meeting held at the home of John & Cece Nelson. Treasurer Joyce Bear presents a financial breakdown before the membership noting the club’s income & expenses to date with regards towards club sponsored activities and ongoing projects (reason to note such here without presenting the recorded details of expenses, this information, while available to the general membership at large upon request, are dealt with the Board Officers at their monthly meeting- Ben). Joe Oaks reported on the NWACC event held in Vancouver Washington, noting the turnout was light

due to the gas situation the country is experiencing, but Jim Hobbs places 1st in

B-1 Autocross and Joe placed 1st in pure stock. John Nelson gave a presentation of the purpose and goals of NCRS, their scheduled activities and publications. John also mentioned the recently formed Northwest Chapter in which he

Ruth Bogle filled for the membership chairperson and notes the current membership at 100. The “how did I end up with this position” editor Frank Olsheski is still desperately seeking Susan…I mean, someone to train to take over the newsletter’s editorial duties. Honorary Membership status was granted by membership majority vote for; Mr. & Mrs. Lee Johnson, Ron & Dee McDuffie, but when Jim McLees nominated John & Penny Grosso, the motioned failed 16 for, 7 against, with 3 abstentions (tough crowd!-Ben). The meeting was called to feast upon a full table loaded with deserts and goodies, while John Nelson led tours through his vast collections and memorabilia of WWII artifacts to his Corvette collectibles.20 LAPS AGO: May '89. President Jan Cockrum starts the monthly meeting held at the Creekside Café at precisely 9:30 PM Corvette Time. Treasurer notes the past Wet Weekend held at Port Ludlow has been paid for where CMCS subsidized about $300 of the expenses. John Thomas is the focal contact for those wishing to participate at SIR this summer. NWACC season starts in June when the Raintree Corvette Club with host the 2 day event that culminates at Lake Sammamish for the annual Corvette Owners Picnic. Dave & Ginny Clark are voted into full membership for a total of 99 members. It was voted to change & amend the club’s Constitution as printed in the March newsletter to meet requirements of the filing dates for IRS compliance. Another vote passes to rejoin NWACC’s insurance program, noting a $6.50 per family cost structure. John Thomas will furnish the new roster that must accompany the funds forwarded to NWACC. 10 LAPS AGO: May ‘99. Kayla Main’s 1993 Bright Aqua Metallic with White leather interior is featured on the newsletter’s cover. President Frank DePuy get the meeting started at the Original Oyster House restaurant in Discovery Bay

membership; Teresa Lannoye & Randy Pierce, who plan to marry in July, Duane & Bonnie Almaden, Kathryn Black and her mom Carolyn, bringing the total to 167. Food is being donated by Rich Tarsitano to support our assisting with the annual Western Corvette Supply event in Lynnwood at the Edmond’s Community College. 5 LAPS AGO: May ‘04. Dan & Janet Roupe’s 1964 Silver roadster graces the cover of the monthly newsletter. President Tim Cox conducts an afternoon meeting at Alfy’s Pizza in Lynnwood. Marty Cameron fills in as Activities chairperson for Sheila Wyllie and notes the upcoming club sponsored activities, and distributed to the members present a brochure of the events. Oran Petersen, newsletter editor, requests pictures of the membership’s Corvettes for publication, and notes CMCS calendars are available for $5 each. CRISTA Ministries Show n Shine is well attended complete with a weenie n burger burner on site. Chairpersons Dick & Lolly D’Alessandro for Seattle In September note the need to get registrations in ASAP and efforts to collect door prizes. The Embassy Suites location has agreed to let us use the grounds across from the hotel for our Corvette activities. We need 75 cars to attend to break even. Next year’s Wet Weekend will be co-chaired between Pat Luczyk and Marty Cameron. Rick Milsow reported a change of venue from the annual Cascade Loop Tour to favor a trip around the Olympic Peninsula as a change of pace, scheduled sometime this coming October. Tim notes he is organizing a 3-day trip to the Bragg-Smith driving school in Nevada next March; 8 slots available, 3 have already signed up with 2 additional expressing strong interest in attending.

Cruisers Enjoy a Memorable Mexican Riviera Cruise

Each time enthusiasts set sail on an NCM Cruise, you can bet that the experience is one to remember. Over 70 Corvette folks took a journey aboard the Mariner of the Seas for seven unforgettable days in the Mexican Riviera in early March. Many started out with a 3-day pre-cruise trip in Los Angeles, where they toured Hollywood, The Getty Museum, and the highlight of the trip - The Petersen Museum. They were treated with a personal, private tour of the “Vault” by the Museum’s director. Cruisers saw whales in Cabo and Puerto Vallarta, cliff divers in Mazatlan and many brave souls did the zip line in Puerto Vallarta zipping through the rainforest high above the tree lines!

All of the wonderful stops and excursions, along with seeing Corvette Cruisers from the past and meeting new friends have made memories that will last forever. Your next chance to join other enthusiasts and cruise the seas is coming in 2010 when we will journey to Northern Europe. This Cruise will be a wonderful time to see cities like Amsterdam, Stockholm, St. Petersburg and Copenhagen. Stay tuned as more details will be made available in the coming months.Remember - To get a magnetic plaque you must preregister by June 1
