  • Welcome to SOMETHING TO SING ABOUT!

250 singers in seven choirs from Greater Sudbury and Manitoulin Island have come

together this evening to share their love of music, and to celebrate music’s power to

engage, inspire, and educate. This family-oriented choral concert features a variety of

traditional and contemporary selections, performed by singers of all ages. It promises

to be a wonderful evening in support of children and youth in Northeastern Ontario.

The organizers would like to thank all of the choir directors, singers, accompanists,

and behind-the-scenes helpers for their many hours of rehearsal in preparation for

this once-in-a-lifetime musical celebration. And everyone involved would like to

thank YOU, the audience, for being here this evening. All of the proceeds from this

fundraising concert will be donated to three charities that benefit children and youth:

the Kiwanis Music Festival of Sudbury, the Joan Mantle Music Trust, and NEO Kids

Foundation. They are grateful for your generous support.

We hope you enjoy this one-of-a-kind experience, and we encourage you to sing

along as often as you can!

Kiwanis Music Festival of Sudbury The Kiwanis Music Festival of Sudbury welcomes

entries in piano, vocal, strings, guitar, woodwind,

brass, speech arts, accordion, music theatre,

    handbells, percussion, recorder, choral, band,

    orchestra and chamber groups.

Each year, private music students and school groups perform for adjudicators who

critique their performances, offering suggestions to improve their musical

interpretation and praising the musicians for well-delivered performances. Students

gain a new perspective of how to interpret their music, and learn tips for practicing

    and performing.

The closing Stars of Excellence concert showcases the highlight performances in each

of the various categories, and celebrates the winners of a wide array of awards

donated by groups and individuals from the community. Each student or group is

encouraged to reach their personal level of excellence in preparation for the yearly

    competition.

The Kiwanis Club of Sudbury sponsors this festival each year in order to better the

lives of children and youth in our community – we believe that music education helps

create good citizens, great employers and strong leaders!

  • The Joan Mantle Music Trust was established in the fall of 2008 to help refresh,

modernize and revitalize school music programs in Rainbow District School Board.

The Trust allocates funding for musical instruments and equipment to selected

schools on a rotating basis. The Trust also accepts the donation of new and used

musical instruments and allocates them to schools in need. This ensures that there is

an ongoing improvement in the condition of musical equipment throughout the

Board, allowing for students to achieve more in their musical studies together.

Rainbow District School Board is grateful to the community for its generous

contributions to the Trust, and thanks the concert organizers, participants and

    attendees for your support.

ABOUT JOAN MANTLE Joan Mantle dedicated many years to music education in Rainbow Schools, and was

delighted to be named the patron of the Trust. “Music education benefits students in

many ways,” she said. “Music is a universal language that enriches the mind and

nourishes the spirit. When students gain an appreciation of music and learn practical

skills, they discover a source of enjoyment and personal satisfaction that will last a

lifetime.” Joan Mantle passed away in 2009, after a courageous battle with cancer.

  • CELEBRATING ONTARIO150

2017 is an exciting and festive year where Ontarians have the opportunity to come together and celebrate our incredible province. Over the course of this year, Ontarians will recognize and celebrate our province’s qualities and values with a range of events and initiatives across the province. Through the Ontario150 grant programs and series of key Signature Initiatives, we will engage youth, encourage cultural expression, promote participation in sport and recreation, and create jobs and economic opportunities across the province.

As one of the charter members of Confederation, Ontario’s story has always been central to the story of Canada. The Government of Ontario has committed to play a lead role in recognizing the significance of this historic milestone and to make the 150th anniversary of Ontario and Canada an occasion for pride and celebration across the province. Throughout 2017, the Ontario150 Secretariat is supporting events and programs across the province that showcase our diverse communities and encourage Ontarians to get involved and celebrate. The commemorations will allow individual Ontarians and communities to tell their unique stories in their own way – to celebrate our achievements, acknowledge lessons learned and recommit to building an inclusive, prosperous society.

THE ORGANIZERS ARE GRATEFUL TO THE MINISTRY OF TOURISM, CULTURE AND SPORT FOR THEIR SUPPORT OF THIS SPECIAL ONTARIO150 EVENT.
