OUR WORK

Our primary work i s in West Pokot along th e Ugandan border, with a t r i be knownas the Pokot. e currently have 20 congregations meeting a t various locationsthroughout West Pokot, eight of which have church buildings. Over 30 Africanpeople serve as pastors and Christian workers with A.C.C.K. Average Sundayattendance a t all th e churches is about 600-700. t i s impossible for us topersonally v i s i t each church on a weekly bas is , but we hel p w it h L eade rsh ipConferences, Youth Camps, Women s Work Sunday School Workshops and other act i v i t i e s which b e n e f i t a l l t h e c hu rc he s

OUR PURPOSE

Our primary goal i s to se e the entire Kara Pokot area evangelized and to helpas many individuals as possible to have a personal relat ionship with JesusC h r i s t . e are a lso concerned, as Jesus was, with the wh ole m an . The Pokotpeople have suffered from many physical problems such as drought and Jack offood, poor water supplies, and no medical help. e have provided aid in theseand o th er a re as . Our desire is to help th e Pokot pe ople h elp themselves, bothphys ica l ly an d s p i r i t u a l l y

THE OUTREACH

The bulk of our t ime, energy, and f inances are spent in th e area o f KaraPokot, the lowland of West Pokot, with th e very primit ive Pokot t r ibe . Thework in Kara Poko t i s currently being carr ied out a t e ig h t l oc at io ns .

Arr iv ing i n Karapokot , Kenya in March of I98O, we found our se lves in th ec e n t e r o f s o c i o l o g i c a l c h a o s — t h e g r a d u a l d e s t r u c t i o n o f a c u l t u r e andpeople by p h y s i c a l s t a r v a t i o n . Once a t y p i c a l c a t t l e - r a i s i n g s p i r i t -worsh ipp ing p r i m i t i v e t r i b e and Pokot were f ac ing grave t h r e a t s to t h e i rt r a d i t i o n a l way of l i v e . Two y ea rs o f very meager r a i n s reduced t h e i rl a n d t o a v i r t u a l d e s e r t — n o e d i b l e p l a n t l i f e was a v a i l a b l e . C a t t l er a i d e r s from Uganda and d i sea se reduced t h e i r once g r e a t h e r d s to a lmos tn o t h i n g . Gone were th e milk and blood t h a t once s u s t a i n e d them th rough

I n s t e a d o f p l u n g i n g i n t o t h e s u r r o u n d i n g h i l l s i n s e a r c h o f H iddenPeop l e , we found our se lves hau l ing t r a i l e r l o ads of powdered milk andmaizemeal a c r o s s sandy r i v e r b e d s . In s t ead o f compi l ing l i s t s o f Pokotv e r b s we o r g a n i z e d c h i l d c a r e prog rams f o r o r p h a n s and w r o t e o u t l o n gr e q u i s i t i o n s f o r medica l s u p p l i e s .

We.rece ived c r i t i c i s m . Some o f o u r co l l e agues i n more p r o s p e r o u s a r ea s o fth e c o u n t r y accused u s o f making r i c e C h r i s t i a n s . But th ey d id n o t comet o c r a d l e t h e t i n y brown b o d i e s to o weak t o even c r y . Most o f t h e women sb r e a s t s had d r i e d up l o n g ago from l a c k o f p r o p e r n u t r i t i o n . The b i r t h o fa new baby s i m p l y mean t a n o t h e r d e a t h .

I t h a s b e e n two y e a r s s i n c e we f i r s t wen t t o P o k o t . During t h e i r f i r s t term they a s s i s ted Dick and Jane Hamil ton and Jus t in and Diane (Messik) Sylvestre with the worki n t h e l o c a t i o n o f K i w a w a .

In 1982 th e Courtneys spent ten months in th e Sta t e s repor t ing to support ingchurches. During t h i s time they t raveled over 25,000 miles which does noti nc lude t h e i r a i r t r a v e l t o an d from th e West Coas t o r Mike s t r i p t o Texasto interview a doctor fo r th e work in Kenya). They vis i ted seven Sta tes andk e p t o v e r 13O speak ing engagements .
