COURSE DESCRIPTION

This literacy course introduces the student to the essentials of computer software. The personal computer operating system and applications such as spreadsheet, database. Emphasis will be placed on spreadsheet and database to solve typical business problems. The student will learn data sharing between applications.

COURSE REQUIREMENTS:

Lateness: Assignments will not be accepted after the beginning of class on the day they are due. If you do not turn in an assignment when it is requested during class, you will NOT get ANY credit for the assignment. Students arriving late for an exam will not be permitted to take the exam if anyone has already completed the exam and left the room.

Miscellaneous: Spelling, grammar and neatness are all important characteristics of business documents. I expect all items submitted for my evaluation will be legibly written, typed, or printed on standard 8 1/2 x 11 inch bond paper or notebook filler paper. Items submitted on oversize or undersize paper or paper torn from spiral notebooks with ragged or torn edges will be penalized as sloppy. If I cannot read your name or student number on an assignment you are likely not to get credit for your work.

Whenever you turn in a document to the instructor for grading be sure that the following information is included on the cover:

3-TIME RULE:The University has adopted a policy that limits undergraduate course enrollment. Courses taken before Fall 1995 will not count as enrollments in meeting the maximum three enrollments in a course. Additionally, individual colleges may have more restrictive policies. The policy for the College of Business is as follows

COLLEGE OF BUSINESS LIMITS ON UNDERGRADUATE COURSE ENROLLMENTIn most instances, a student may enroll in an undergraduate class a maximum of three times, except with the permission of the student's academic dean. A student may enroll more than three times in a variable-topic, studio, performance, workshop or other course that is identified as 'may be repeated for credit.' This includes enrollments that result in a grade of "W", "F", "D", or "P". It does not apply to courses taken prior to a students' re-enrolling under 'Option 2' or Readmission After Extended Absence. Individual colleges may have more restrictive policies. The College of Business instituted a "3 time" enrollment limitation in the Spring, 1993 semester. Courses taken that semester or later are subject to this rule.

Additionally, a student may not enroll in a course in which a grade of "C" or higher has been previously earned (except for a variable-topic, studio, performance, workshop or other course that is identified as 'may be repeated for credit'). Moreover, a student may not enroll in a course in which he or she has an unresolved grade of 'I'

        Hints for success in this class: Attend classes, bring your textbook, take detailed notes, do the assigned homework, participate in class discussions, read textbook and study your notes. If you don’t attend class, you will not have notes to study and you won’t know what was covered in class. Ask questions when you don’t understand. See me in my office if you require detailed explanations or if you need extra credit assignments. If you cannot see me during my office hours, speak to me before or after class and make an appointment to see me when we are both available. Do ALL of the homework and study it.

Cellular Phones, Beepers, Pagers, and Electronic watches>

If you carry one, turn it off or leave it in the car. Students who receive calls during class are rude and will become the subject of severe social ridicule at the hand of the professor. If you have a compelling reason to use a pager in class, please let the professor know immediately.  I am the only one that should have a watch, phone, or pager that beeps during class. Points will be deducted from your class participation grade for such disruptions.

Instructor Initiated Drops Under UTEP policy the instructor has the right to initiate course withdrawals (through the date listed in the course schedule for this semester) for any student who is not attending class or keeping up with assignments. Normally I do not initiate drops except under extraordinary circumstances.

Student Initiated Drops The deadline for dropping courses with an automatic W is listed in the course schedule published by the University. After this deadline a grade of W of F is determined by the instructor.

Incomplete Grades The student is responsible for removing incomplete grades. Incomplete grades are automatically changed to F one year after the incomplete is posted. Students should submit all uncompleted work one month prior to the end of the term in which the F deadline will occur. This will allow ample time to grade the work and initiate the grade change process. It is to your benefit to respect these deadlines.

        CLASS PARTICIPATING IS VERY IMPORTANT EACH UNEXCUSED ABSENT WILL RESULT IN 1% REDUCTION ON OVERALL GRADING SCALE.

   Scholastic DishonestyIt is the official policy of the university that all suspected cases or acts of alleged scholastic dishonesty must be referred to the Dean of Students for investigation and appropriate disposition. It is contrary to university policy for a faculty member to assign a disciplinary grade such as an "F" or zero to an assignment, test, examination, or other course work as a sanction for admitted or suspected scholastic dishonesty in lieu of normally charging the student through the Dean of Students. Similarly, students are prohibited from proposing and/or entering into an arrangement with a faculty member to receive a grade of "F" or any reduced grade in lieu of being charged with scholastic dishonesty.

Any student who commits an act of scholastic dishonesty is subject to discipline. Scholastic dishonesty includes, but is not limited to cheating, plagiarism, collusion, the submission

A.    "cheating" includes:

1. 1.      copying from the test paper of another student, engaging in written, oral, or any other means of communication with another student during a test, or giving aid to or seeking aid from another student during a test;

2. 2.      possession and/or use during a test of materials which are not authorized by the person giving the test, such as class notes, books, or specifically designed "crib notes";

3. 3.      using, obtaining, or attempting to obtain by any means the whole or any part of non-administered test, test key, homework solution, or computer program, or using a test that has been administered in prior classes or semesters, but which will be used again either in whole or in part without permission of the instructor; or accessing a test bank without instructor permission;

B.     "plagiarism" means the appropriation, buying, receiving as a gift, or obtaining by any means another's work and the unacknowledged submission or incorporation of it in one's own academic work offered for credit, or using work in a paper or assignment for which the student had received credit in another course without direct permission of all involved instructors.

C. C.     "collusion" means the unauthorized collaboration with another person in preparing academic assignments offered for credit or collaboration with another person to commit a violation of any provision of the rules on scholastic dishonesty.
