This two-day course starts with a review of the primary and secondary surveys and initial resuscitation including ample time to practice applying concepts learned. Delivery of the course consists of team-based simulation sessions, which are interspersed with short, small group, interactive case-based or didactic sessions and technical skills sessions for practicing procedures. Topics include head injury, airway management, upper body injuries, abdominal trauma, imaging interpretation and much more. A certified instructor is provided for each module. The participant to instructor ratio is typically 6:1 or lower during the technical skills and simulation sessions.

• Recall the differences between adult and child pathophysiology.

• Conduct a primary and secondary survey for pediatric trauma cases.

• Recognize, diagnose and manage common trauma related pediatric injuries.

• Discuss ethical issues related to pediatric trauma.

• Interpret diagnostic images for pediatric trauma cases.

• Determine the appropriate steps to prepare for the transport of a pediatric trauma patient.

Developed by a national team of trauma experts (including pediatric emergency medicine, critical care, transport and surgical specialists), the Royal College’s Trauma Resuscitation in Kids (TRIK) course provides an approach to the management of a multitude of different injuries typical of the pediatric trauma victim. TRIK provides simulated cases as a means for healthcare providers to gain hands-on experience in a safe and experiential learning environment.

What you’ll learnStarting from primary survey and initial resuscitation, the course provides and interactive approach to managing common and uncommon pediatric trauma cases.

AudienceCustom designed for healthcare providers in Canada and abroad who manage pediatric trauma patients, with a focus on the

leader and team roles.

The TRIK course is suitable for Emergency Physicians, Pediatricians, Family Physicians, Critical Care Physicians, Pediatric Surgery, General Surgery, Emergency Nurses and Respiratory Therapists. It is an accredited Section 1 and 3 learning activity as defined by the Royal College’s Maintenance of Certification (MOC) Program. We recommend that participants have current certification in Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS) prior to taking this course. Endorsed by the Trauma Association of Canada as an equivalent to ATLS.
