COURIER April – May 2016
These past few months I have been reading the poetry of Jan Richardson as part of my
personal devotion and prayer time. I’ve never been an avid reader of poetry, and I
certainly can’t write it, but Jan’s words around blessing have been particularly moving to
me. So I share this one with you and pray that you will find something in it that speaks
to where God is working blessing around and within you. In Christ’s peace, Pastor Sarah.
BLESSING THAT UNDOES US
On the day
you are wearing
your certainty
like a cloak
and your sureness
goes before you
like a shield
or like a sword,
may the sound
of God’s name
spill from your lips
as you have never
heard it before.
May your knowing
be undone.
May mystery
confound your
understanding.
May the Divine
rain down
in strange syllables
yet with
an ancient familiarity,
a knowing borne
in the blood,
the ear,
the tongue,
bringing the clarity
that comes
not in stone
or in steel
but in fire,
in flame.
May there come
one searing word –
enough to bare you
to the bone,
enough to set
your heart ablaze,
enough to make you
whole again.

April - May Newsletter
Our mission emphasis for the month of May.
The Birthday Offering is a PW
offering collected in the spring of
each year to celebrate the
blessings in the lives of
Presbyterian Women and Men.
In 1922, to celebrate the tenth
anniversary of the Woman’s Auxiliary
(PCUS), it was
decided that an offering should be
made for a definite cause. Hallie Paxson Winsborough challenged members of the Woman’s Auxiliary to give
one penny for each year of their lives (or a dollar if a woman preferred not to reveal her age) as a birthday gift to Miss Dowd’s School for Girls in Kochi, Japan. The tradition has
continued. These offerings have enabled a long succession of new and often innovative mission projects throughout the world. No giving guidelines are suggested other than “give
as you are blessed.”
The offering funds up to five projects that are not included in ongoing General Assembly mission support, such as agricultural development, child care, community organization,
criminal justice, drug counseling, economic justice, elderly care, employment training, homelessness, literacy, violence and women’s concerns.
Some recent grant recipients include:

COMMUNION
You are invited to share
the Lord’s Supper with us
on April 17th and on Pentecost Sunday, May
15th.
To help celebrate
Pentecost, please plan to
wear RED
on Sunday, May 15.
“The church knew what the
psalmist knew: Music praises God. Music is as well, or
better, able to praise him
than the building of a church and all its decoration; it is
the church’s greatest ornament.”
—Igor Stravinsky
MUSIC APPRECIATION
“Beautiful music is the art of the prophets that can calm the agitations of the soul,” said Martin Luther. Of course, he never heard intense rap or loud rock ’n’ roll! Still, the great reformer of the faith was correct. What other art can so quickly soothe us and bring us inner peace?
Bernard Berenson put it this way: “On the wings of music
we soar above and beyond nature, farther than any other
vehicle can carry us.”
King Saul often became depressed and inwardly
tormented. Some of his servants thought he could find
relief by listening to music. The king heard about Jesse’s
son David, who skillfully played a lyre (some translations
read “harp”). Saul sent for David and heard him play.
Saul was so helped by the music that he asked David to
join his court.
Thus we read in 1 Samuel 16:23, “Whenever the evil
spirit … came upon Saul, David took the lyre and played
it with his hand, and Saul would … feel better” (NRSV).
What songs and hymns have that same effect on you?
During the service on May 22nd, we will take a moment
to thank all those who add so much to our worship
service every week.
To our Music Director, Gayle Olsen;
to our Cherub Choir director, Linda Malcolm;
to A Pealing Sound & Rainbow Bells director, Bea
Mooney;
to our choir, soloists, special music, handbell ringers,
chapel choir, rainbow bells:
We say thank you!
Thank you for sharing the gifts God gave you as you help
us worship and give praise to God!
May we offer our appreciation, respect and
admiration for the dedication of those who share
their gifts with us.

Healing and community
In [the] healing texts, Jesus does not just
cure people’s diseases and cast out their demons and then say, “Mission
accomplished.” He’s always after something more than that because the
healing is never fully accomplished until there is a restoration to community.
People are healed of disease, and then he tells the folks just standing around
watching to go get them something to eat. The widow’s son is raised from the
dead and then [Jesus] gives him back to
his mother. And ... the man healed of demons is then told to stay with his
people and speak of what God has done. In the Jesus business, community is
always a part of healing. Even though community is never perfect.

Birthdays in Our Church Family
Human Services Committee
The Human Services Committee was formed with money left from the Estate of Leona McDowell. There are bank stocks that have over the
years supplied this fund. According to the Will, money is to be used to help First Presbyterian Church Members who are in need. The definition
of “in need” is varied. In the past, the items following have been covered. Medical, Fuel Bills, Transportation costs (funerals, hospital
stays, medical treatment), Electric bills, Nursing home costs, Funeral costs, General expenses after illness or accident, Dental bills, and Rent.
This committee is asking that everyone keep other members in their hearts and prayers.
If you see someone in need, please call the church office.
Dear Church Family,
I would like to thank
my church family for their many prayers,
cards and phone calls I received while I was in
the DelRay FL Hospital and at a Re-Hab center in Wellington FL from February 9th
to March 5th after having a total knee replacement. A special thanks to Pastor
Sarah for her support and phone calls. I am making a very good recovery at
outpatient Re-Hab and plan to be back in
Delhi the first week of June.
Your support and concern was very much
appreciated.
Love and God Bless, Anne Valentine
FPC,
I stopped in last summer to access my
church records from long ago when I lived in Delhi and attended FPC. You were
all very helpful in this search, so I’m writing – better late than never—to say
thank you very much for your help.

&
their spouses (regardless of
age) are welcome.

Volunteer perks
Celebrate National Volunteer
Week (April 10-16 this year) by
meeting a need in your church
or community.
Volunteering not only helps the
people we serve. It also has
surprising benefits for the
volunteer. Serving others builds
social and relational skills,
increases self-confidence and
boosts physical health. Studies
show that volunteering can even
ease chronic pain and heart
disease.
So do yourself — and others —
some good by following Jesus’
example of serving.

WOMEN BUILD CLINICS
Below are fliers by Lowes of Oneonta announcing the two (2) Women Build Clinics that
they are holding for Habitat for Humanity of Delaware County. I am very excited about
these two dates (4/16 and 4/30) and hope several of the women of First Presbyterian
Church will come to one or both and then be able to help Habitat with working at a few
homes to do simple repair/clean up work (called A Brush With Kindness) possibly during
late spring or early summer. These clinics will prepare women for work with construction
tools, painting expertise, and a general knowledge of simple construction
techniques. There is no registration fee, but it would be helpful if they were to RSVP to
me/habitat or to Kim Ford as stated on the bottom of the flyers. You may call Linda
Malcolm for more information at 607-287-0815. Women working together can change
the world and I hope to see you there if possible.
