COURIER - SUMMER 2017
First Presbyterian Church
Delhi, NY July - August 2017
Information from Session Regarding the Pastor Nominating Committee
In the PC (USA) call process, the congregation gives authority to search for a pastor to a pastor nominating committee
(PNC). Once the PNC is elected, the other members of the congregation and the session have no role in determining
who will be the next pastor until the PNC is ready to present its nominee to the congregation for a vote.
The presbytery has a responsibility to work with the PNC members, to advise them, and to evaluate the nominee they
select to present to the congregation. The presbytery is authorized by our Book of Order to be partners with you in your
discernment process.
The presbytery may have recommendations for the session regarding the number of members for a PNC and the
process of electing a PNC. Often congregations will use the congregation’s nominating committee to propose a slate of
nominees for the PNC. In considering nominees for the PNC, the congregation’s nominating committee should strive for
a PNC that is representative of the whole congregation. It should consider church members of integrity who are
knowledgeable about the church and community and about Presbyterian theology and government; spiritual leaders
within the congregation and are active in the life and work of the congregation; able to make a significant commitment of
their time, energy, and very best wisdom; willing to accept this as a task of spiritual discernment, not being easily
influenced by personal desires or congregational politics, but rather listening for the voice of God able to honor
confidentiality.
The congregation must give careful and prayerful attention to the election of persons to serve in this important role.
The Process for Electing a Pastor Nominating Committee (PNC)
Steps:
1. The presbytery authorizes the congregation to elect a PNC. (this step has been completed)
2. The session recommends the number of persons to serve on the PNC.
3. The nominating committee or another designated committee prepares a slate to be voted on by the congregation
at a meeting called by the session.
4. A congregational meeting is held to elect the PNC.
5. The PNC is elected and commissioned for its work.
At the June Session meeting, a unanimous decision was made to wait until we have a full Session, and all new Session
members in place (September 2017), until we move forward in this process. In the meantime, if anyone has any
suggestions on how many should serve on the PNC, or on possible candidates for the PNC, please feel free to let any
member of Session and/or the Nominating committee know. Thanks for your patience in this matter.

607-746-2155 Emergency - 607-287-8250
I was born and raised in sunny California and lived there until 15 years ago, when I started moving eastward following the call to ministry. I was totally ready for a new part of the country, seasons and all, which is good, because my first move was to Indiana. I found the fall breathtaking! I shoveled my own driveway out of snow on my first Christmas day. I have always loved weather, no matter what. I now have experienced quite a few winters in Delaware County, NY, however, and when summer shows up (hopefully!) I am so happy to get outside. I think everyone in these types of climes must feel that way, so I have had to gear down my expectations for Sunday morning worship attendance since 2008. I now understand, but I cannot say I like half-filled pews. I would like to think that you, too, are praising God for the beauty that surrounds us, and the beauty of a relaxing vacation in some other place. God is so good, and praise is a vital part of our relationship with God. People occasionally tell me they do not need to go to church to praise God; they feel God’s nearness in many other ways and in many other places. I personally, can sense God in every place and everything as well, but those “places” are not, for me anyway, as satisfying as gathering with others for worship. I want to encourage you in this way: As this congregation continues in a season of transition, it is very good to gather, to continue to practice togetherness. It is vital that we listen to the Word of the Lord together, feel God’s promised presence when we gather, and to give of ourselves to God: time, talents and resources. Worship is a healthy habit, and sustenance for the soul. Make time for God. “Remember the Sabbath and keep it holy.” In the frantic pace of life, we need to make time for God. Come to worship to gather in God’s presence, to be renewed and refreshed for every other hour of the week.
See you in worship! Pastor Lisa
“And let us consider how to provoke one another to love and good deeds, not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the Day approaching.” Hebrews 10:24-25 NRSV

Christ’s Hands
In World War II, bombs destroyed a church in
Strasbourg, France. As parishioners cleared the
rubble, they discovered a statue of Jesus that was now missing both hands.
A visiting sculptor later offered to make repairs,
but church members declined, saying Christ “has no hands to minister to the needy or feed
the hungry or enrich the poor — except our hands. He inspires. We perform.”
St. Teresa of Avila wrote:
Christ has no body but yours;
no hands, no feet on earth but yours. Yours are the eyes with which he looks
compassion on this world.
Yours are the feet with which he walks to do good.
Yours are the hands with which he blesses all the world.
Yours are the hands, yours are the feet, yours are the eyes, you are his body.
Christ has no body now but yours.

filled to overflowing next Sunday! Please look around
for all those coins that are cluttering your life and
bring your coins in to the “Least Coin/Mile of Pennies”
jar in the narthex. These coins will help brighten
someone else’s life! The money collected from this jar
goes toward the “Fellowship of the Least Coin”
supporting our extra-mile mission giving with our
brothers and sisters around the globe. Please see the
pamphlet in the narthex or stop by the church office
if you want to know more about this offering.
Children in Worship
Children of any age are always welcome in
our worship. Children's bulletins are available in the narthex for kids of all ages
(including a few of us who are just feeling young at heart) and can help us engage in
the Biblical stories that are being read in worship.
The Child Care Room will be available to parents each Sunday. Feel free to use the
child care room if you need. The child-care room is located in the CE wing of the
building. Please contact an usher if you would like help getting to the child-care
room.
Puzzles, small toys, coloring and drawing materials are located in the hospitality
room on the shelves. Children are welcome to select a bag with items of
their choosing to use during worship. You may return the materials to the
shelves at the conclusion of the service or simply leave the bag in the pew.
Devotionals Available
The Upper Room Devotionals are
available on the information racks and
tables in the Narthex and outside the
church office. If you wish to contribute to
defray the cost, there is a wooden box in
the Narthex or you may leave donations
in the church office.
The summer worship schedule will run through September 3.
Worship will begin at 9:30 a.m. those Sundays.
Services of Holy Communion
will be celebrated on Sunday,

Taizé worship services
Submitted by Pastor Bobby Outterson Murphy of
the Delhi Clergy Association
I am very excited to let you all know that a few
churches in our area are working together to
organize regular Taizé worship services. Our first
gathering will be at 7pm on Thursday, August 17th
at United Ministry, with subsequent gatherings the
3rd Thursday of each month at other churches
(more information to come). Why am I excited
about this? And what is Taizé, you might ask? Well,
Taizé is an ecumenical monastic community
(including protestant, catholic, and orthodox
Christians) that hosts over 100,000 young people
from all over the world every year. Over time, the
community has developed a way of praying with
simple and meditative songs. If you joined us for
Maundy Thursday, you got a chance to experience
a taste of their contemplative style of worship
through chants, silence, candlelight, and art.
Fitness Classes Offered
The Senior Exercise Class will continue to meet Monday and
Wednesday mornings at 9:00
am in the Fellowship Hall. Dust off your sneakers and

all the volunteers who continue to make this all possible! It is a lot of work but it

sale now in the Kirk Thrift Shoppe. Keep an eye out for it! The drawing will be
held at the Harvest Festival in September.
Please keep those donations coming in - you may leave them under the hallway
table outside the Thrift Shoppe or in the upstairs hallway outside the Church
Office. There are three bins in the office hallway. We could really use clear plastic
zipper bags - medium size, large paper shopping bags with handles and large
plastic bins for storage. Many thanks to all!

Thinking about stewardship
Christians give to the Lord because they are grateful. The giving
of themselves in totality - body, mind, spirit, talents, time and
material resources - is the Christian way of expressing their
thankfulness to God for all that they have. Responding to the
immeasurable love and grace of God, dedicated Christians open
their hearts and hands toward God in a spirit of appreciation and
love.

Susie, Jason and Kelsey Little on the
passing of Tom’s father, Dick Little on

If you know of anyone who is in the hospital or in need of pastoral care,
please call the church office. We would rather be notified ten times
than not be aware of the needs of the church family!
Our prayers are with those who have
recently had outpatient procedures, surgery, are facing major changes in
their lives, been hospitalized or are facing difficult health concerns.
Human Services Committee
This committee was formed with money
left from the Estate of Leona McDowell. There are bank stocks that have over
the years supplied this fund. According
to the Will, money is to be used to help First Presbyterian Church Members who
are in need. The definition of “in need” is varied. In
the past, the items on the following list have been covered.
Fuel Bills
Medical bills Transportation costs (funerals,
hospital stays, medical treatment)
Dental bills
Rent Electric bills
Nursing home costs Funeral costs
General expenses after illness or accident
This committee is asking that everyone
keep other members in their hearts and if you see someone in need, please call
the church office.
Come Join the Fun! What says summer better than a campfire? A campfire
with friends! Campfire Thursdays will start July 6th
at Tom and Susie Little's house on Arbuckle Hollow.
We would like to open the location up to anyone else
willing to host on July 20, August 10 and August 24.
Come enjoy one another's company and a S'More! If
you play guitar, feel free to bring it!! Call Susie for
directions. The fun starts at 7:30! (bring your swim
suit if you like to swim in a pond!)
Let's get together on Tuesday, August 22 and go out
for dinner and a show! The Forestburgh Playhouse puts on
a dinner and Cabaret before the real show for $28.50 and
then we will watch Crazy for You for $44. There are
brochures in the office for more details about the show. We
will meet at the church at 3:30 to arrange carpooling and
head out from there. Dinner starts at 6:00. Call the church
office or Carolyn Massey or Susie Little for details.
ALZHEIMER’S CARE TEAM If you are interested in supporting others by
serving on an Alzheimer’s care team, please contact
the office. The team would provide respite for people who are
struggling to care for someone in their home
with Alzheimer’s or other memory loss diseases.
Training is provided (3 hours). A four person
team would then have a 2 hour time commitment
each month. Brochures with additional
information are available in the church office and
on the bulletin board in the office hallway.
ANNUAL SCHOOL SUPPLY
PROJECT
The First Presbyterian Church of Delhi is heading the School Supply project for the Delhi Community.
This project helps to provide school supplies, backpacks and items needed for a successful school year to
Delaware Academy students in need. First Presbyterian Church will be sorting and delivering all the
donations this year. Cash contributions are also greatly
appreciated and are often used to purchase socks, underwear,
backpacks and snacks. Checks should be made payable to “First
Presbyterian Church” with ‘school supplies’ on the memo line and
may be dropped off in the church office or mailed to First
Presbyterian Church, 4 Clinton Street, Delhi, NY 13753.
Please submit all donations by Thursday, August 31 so they can
be sorted and distributed. There is a basket outside the First
Presbyterian Church Office for school supply donations. The
school does very much appreciate this ministry. What has been
donated in the past has been used. Thank you for your help with
this important local mission! If you have any questions, please call
the First Presbyterian church office at 607-746-2155.
We have communicated with the school and the following items are needed for this mission
outreach to our community:
glue sticks #2 pencils colored pencils markers erasers rulers (12”) lotions dental picks juice boxes child size mittens character band aids sturdy three-ring
binders
crayons (24 pack Crayola brand is preferred by most teachers)
Full-size backpacks – especially backpacks suitable for boys (“generic” are best – no cartoon characters, etc.)
spiral notebooks scissors (especially blunt) deodorant male/female mini shampoo bottles toothbrushes/mini toothpaste chapsticks tampons other items from the supply lists available on the
school website or in the FPC office
God in heaven, hear my prayer.
Keep me in thy loving care.
Be my guide in all I do.
Bless all those who love me
too. Amen.

Holiness 2.0
For the Hebrews, who had experienced
the anguish of slavery and exile,
holiness had to do with separation.
Adherence to sacred law [ensured]
that they would not be absorbed into a
foreign culture, a legitimate fear for
them as a people. The Law was quite
functional in preserving their Jewish
identity.
[But] Jesus turns this custom upside
down. Rather than insist on separation,
he preaches inclusion. Rather than
remove himself from “sinners,” he
joins with them in love. For Jesus,
holiness is about connection, not
separation. It is about putting aside
the fear of our own alienation and
annihilation while trusting in love to
heal every breach.
—Quantum Grace, Judy Cannato
Independence Day lessons for church life
• Return to the basics — On July 4
we commemorate the origins of our
country. In terms of faith, we also
periodically need to hear again the
foundational stories of Creation, the
Israelites and, of course, Jesus.
• Honor the gift of freedom — “For
freedom Christ has set us free … do
not submit again to a yoke of
slavery” (Galatians 5:1, ESV). We
strive as citizens to preserve and live
out our national freedom. Likewise,
as citizens of God’s kingdom we live
gladly in the freedom of salvation
and share that gift with others.
• Enjoy community — July 4 is known for picnics, parades and other
community gatherings. Similarly, the church is nourished by coming
together for worship, meals and other special events.
• Be light in the darkness — As fireworks brighten the sky with light and
color, the church is called to display the Gospel’s unique light in a dark
world. Our word dynamite and the Greek word for power — as in, “You
will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you” (Acts 1:8) —
share a root. Through God’s power in us, we share Jesus — dynamically!
— with others.
