Peru (auf Quechua Piruw Republika, Aimara Piruw Suyu, spanisch República del Perú, amtlich Republik Peru) ist ein Staat im westlichen Südamerika und grenzt im Norden an Ecuador und Kolumbien, im Osten an Brasilien, im Südosten an Bolivien, im Süden an Chile und im Westen an den Pazifik. Die Länge der Landesgrenze mit Ecuador beträgt 1.420 km, mit Kolumbien 1.626 km, mit Brasilien 2.995 km, mit Bolivien 900 km und mit Chile 160 km. Die Gesamtlänge der Landesgrenzen beträgt 7.101 Kilometer. Die Küste steht unter dem Einfluss des Humboldtstroms und ist weitgehend eine Küstenwüste, in der nur entlang der aus den Anden kommenden Flüsse in Flussoasen Landwirtschaft möglich ist.Im Süden Perus an der Grenze zu Chile beginnt die trockenste Wüste der Erde, die Atacama-Wüste. Im südlichen Bereich der Costa bis zur Hauptstadt Lima, die ungefähr auf der Hälfte des Küstenstreifens liegt, sind Regenfälle im gesamten Jahresverlauf sehr selten.Nördlich der Hauptstadt Lima nehmen Bodenqualität und Regenfall etwas zu, sodass Landwirtschaft dort auch außerhalb der Flussoasen möglich ist. Die Temperaturen schwanken zwischen 12 °C im Winter und 35 °C im Sommer.Größere Städte an der Küste nebst Lima sind (eine Auswahl, von Norden nach Süden): Tumbes, Sullana, Piura, Chiclayo, Trujillo, Chimbote, Huaral, Pisco, Ica, Nazca.
