Counting and Sharing Our Broadway...
Transcript of Counting and Sharing Our Broadway...
-
We have all heard the term, “A
November to remember.” Maybe
November is good “remembering”
month because it is the traditional
time to gather with family and
friends and count our many
blessings. Let us do some
remembering and counting of our
Broadway blessings!
We are a blessed
congregation in so many ways.
Through careful and prudent planning, our church
facilities have grown—becoming a blessing to many
church and community groups. We open our doors not
just on Sunday morning and Wednesday evening, but
almost every single day. Our buildings have become
tools for ministry, from Wednesday Woodhaven bingo in
the Fellowship Hall to weekend poverty simulations in
the Christian Life Center to nightly meetings for support
groups in our lower level.
When the call goes out for a special offering following
a natural disaster anywhere in the world, Broadway
members have resounded with generosity. We were
blessed to receive almost $10,000 for hurricane relief.
Our generous spirit helps those near to us as well, with
our Benevolence Fund to assist members in need; or the
community outreach that is managed by our Service
Ministry team. Ten percent of Broadway’s budgeted
revenue is allocated to
Service Ministry each year—a
tangible example of
Broadway’s giving spirit.
What are your personal
Broadway blessings?
Friendships? Worship? A
CareLink call or card during a
difficult time? We all have
examples of how Broadway
has blessed us personally
and spiritually. Share the blessing of Broadway with
your friends and neighbors as we near the Advent
Season. You already know what Broadway’s worship,
music and service opportunities will add to your
holiday—why not share that blessing with others?

It Is Time To Be Thankful...
Counting and Sharing Our Broadway Blessings
-
We hear from the Psalmist “I will
extol the Lord at all times; his praise
shall be continually in my
mouth.”(34:11) Extolling the Lord is
not something hard for me to
understand; I treasure and long for
that. Doing it continually? Now that
gives me pause.
It gives me pause because I don’t do it. Oh, as a
background sound track maybe it is running most the
time, but not consciously. I tend to forget to fill my
heart and mouth with praise either when I am happy
on my own or tragedy has come a calling. For
example, I am not too good at doing that following the
latest mass shooting.
But the Psalmist doesn’t say “I will extol the Lord
most of the time…” This reminds me of the Apostle
Paul’s injunction to “pray without ceasing.” Surely he
doesn’t mean uttering the words of prayer all that time.
What is it then?
Maybe it is developing an attitude, a posture of
prayerfulness, an awareness of the presence of God
in everything. I can understand and even do that …
most of the time. I can be aware of God
in the midst of the concert, the aftermath of
tragedy, in intimate moments, or the time
when extraordinary patience is required. I
can lean on God and maybe even mutter
short prayers whenever the moment calls
for it.
I so often get in the way of that
happening. It’s ego, distraction, and misplaced
attention. All that edges God out of the picture.
And that is one of the reasons I simply love
Thanksgiving. It helps us get past ourselves so that
we can receive the gift of gratitude. We need
reminders to mobilize that power. And then on the
heels of Thanksgiving the Advent and Christmas
season arrive, yet more opportunity to liberate
ourselves from ourselves. I look forward to filling my
heart and mouth with continual praise. And maybe by
looking forward to it I already am.

The Season of Advent
begins on Sunday, December 3,
and plans are underway to make
Advent 2017 a glorious season at
Broadway!
Advent Outreach
Broadway’s Service/Mission and
Outreach Ministry is busy all year,
but particularly so at this time of
year! Our Advent outreach has already begun, with
our Voluntary Action Center Christmas Basket Sponsor
sign-ups. Sign-ups will continue through Sunday,
November 12.
The Tree of Hope will debut on November 26 in
Fellowship Hall. The Tree will be decorated with cards
containing the names of children in need. Gifts should
be returned by December 17.
On December 3 and 10, look for the traditional
SERV Sale in Fellowship Hall. Items from the Global
Market will be available at Broadway—making your
Christmas shopping convenient—and providing unique
hand-made gifts that benefit local artisans in
developing countries.
Broadway will once again ring the bell for Salvation
Army! We will return to “our” Hy-Vee on West
Broadway on Fridays and Saturdays in December.
Contact Don Harter at [email protected] for more
information.
Advent Worship
Our Advent worship will center on Mary, the
Mother of Jesus. We will share the joy of the season
with a collection of Advent reflections, written by our
ministers, Elders and Deacons. The collections will be
available at the Welcome
Center in the Narthex during
the Advent Season.
On the first Sunday of
Advent, December 3, we will
decorate our sacred spaces
with the Blessing of the
Greens. If you would like to
assist with this special service,
or the pre-Advent decorating,
contact Vickie Keeling-Wallace.
What would Advent be without our children’s
Christmas program? This year’s program will be
celebrated on December 10. During the Sunday
School hour on December 10, children and their
families will have a special Advent party in the CLC.
Christmas Eve falls on Sunday this year, so our
worship schedule will reflect our regular Christmas Eve
schedule, with services at 11:00 a.m., 5:30 p.m., 8:00
p.m. and 11:00 p.m. Our 11:00 a.m. service will be
followed with a soup and sandwich luncheon in
Fellowship Hall.
Our December Broadway Life will be full of details
on our Advent and Christmas celebrations. But mark
your calendar now—and don’t miss Christmas at
Broadway!

Every month, this shaded box
summarizes the ongoing CareLink
ministries from the past month. Each
month we ask the chairs of these
ministries to let us know--
1. How many services were
provided?
So how many cards were mailed,
calls were made, casseroles were
provided, flowers were delivered? You
get the picture.
2. How many people were served?
Sometimes these ministries actually benefit more than
one person, a family or multiple people.
3. How many phones calls or emails?
In a month's time, how many emails, phone calls or
even personal contacts did it take for the CareLink chairs
to set up these ministry services? We are so thankful for
email because we can respond quickly to any needs of our
church family. But it often takes multiple contacts to get
this accomplished.
4. How many volunteers served?
Well as you can imagine, it takes a lot of volunteers to
get the job done. CareLink now has over 120 volunteers
signed up for the 10 ministries. And we count most of
them each month. Many volunteers serve in more than
one CareLink ministry. And from time to time, volunteers
must drop out for a while because of health challenges or
travel. So we always need more volunteers.
What makes all of this possible is the shared
information from our ministers and staff to CareLink and
from CareLink to them. We are often able to identify
needs in advance and to plan for those
needs. If something comes up suddenly,
the word goes out quickly and the
response is just as quick.
As the "box" says, none of these
numbers count all the ongoing visits and
calls made by our ministers and
staff. CareLink swings into action
wherever there is a reported need.
Now you can see why it is so
important that we church family members
let the church office know what's going on so that they and
CareLink can respond. Often, CareLink volunteers report
the needs or situation to the church ministers and staff.
We know that numbers are just that. But we use this
method to let all of us know how our month as a church
family has gone. CareLink loves you and wants to show it
by responding to our church family every month in a
variety of ministries. We welcome more volunteers. You
can see, it takes a lot of us!
"I am so thankful for the prayer support and cards that
came my way during my recent surgery and hospital
stay (and return home.) CareLink is a wonderful
ministry. With a grateful heart."
"My small group is studying James 2:14-26 'Faith and
Deeds.' How ironic is that. BCC's Handy Helpers are
doing exactly what James says we all need to do--
have faith AND do good deeds. God is truly blessing
us all."

C A L E N D A R Broadway Christian Church received a reconciliation grant from
the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) of Mid America. The
grant is to support a book study related to racism. Funds will be
used to purchase books for participants of the studies. The book
study groups will be composed of racially and culturally diverse
congregations.
Statement of Purpose:
1. Study groups will share their personal stories of racism as
the book study progresses. The purpose of this is to gain a better
understanding of issues of racism in Columbia and beyond.
2. Study groups will compile a list of current problems of
racism today in Columbia that need to be addressed. In doing
this, we will determine what efforts are already underway and
determine what gaps there are that need to be addressed.
3. As groups form and study, lasting friendships will
develop. Some efforts are already underway and this project will
build on those efforts.
4. Participants will gain a better understanding of racism from
racially and culturally diverse points of view.
5. Above all, this project will not end with a book study, but will
lead to continuing efforts to address racism in Columbia and
beyond.
We hope a number of Broadway members will want to
participate in the studies. We are beginning to get organized to
start the studies in January. If you are interested in participating
we will have opportunities to sign up over the next couple of
months. If you are interested, please contact Don Day
at [email protected] or call 573-474-5539 or cell 573-819-

This is the time of year when Room
at the Inn volunteers begin to pay close
attention to the weather forecast,
praying that the extreme cold
temperatures of a Missouri winter will
hold off—just until we can open the
doors for another season. For our 2018
season, the shelter will open on
December 3 at the Unitarian Church.
Room at the Inn comes to Broadway
on January 2 and will be housed in our
Christian Life Center through the morning of January 29.
Volunteers are always needed, but you can also help
with in-kind donations of fresh fruit, milk, sandwich meat
or other food items during the shelter’s stay at Broadway.
A list of suggested items will be published in next
month’s newsletter.
While we hope that you will consider volunteering,
especially at Broadway, volunteers will be needed
throughout the entire shelter
season, which runs from December
3, 2017 through the morning of
March 11, 2018 (at least). There
are several shifts available, with
varying degrees of guest
interaction. Teams of volunteers
are also needed to assist with
bigger, ongoing needs such as
laundry, supplies and inventory,
transitioning from one host site to
another and community
presentations.
Room at the Inn is truly an ecumenical outreach that
stretches across all faith communities in Columbia.
Make 2018 the year that you join this very dedicated
group of people who are dedicated to serving the
homeless—contact Debby Graham at 445.5312, or
[email protected] for more information.
2018 Room at the Inn Planning Continues
You’ve heard of working
vacations—those are generally
no fun! So while you are
deciding how to allocate your
2018 vacation days, why not
consider a serving vacation?
Broadway's next mission
trip to El Salvador will be June
20-July 7, 2018. Our trip
projects have included building latrines, homes, stoves
and chicken barns—all done alongside the people of the
community we are serving. Working alongside
community members is part of the mission, and one
reason why so many of our mission team members want
to return. Contact Don Day at 474.5579 for more info.
Plan A Serving Vacation

The Tree of Hope is one of
Broadway’s favorite Christmas
traditions. The Tree will go up on
Sunday, November 26, and will be
decorated with cards containing the
names, needs and wishes of
children across Boone County and
Columbia.
Each child’s card will be numbered. You are asked to
sign out the card in the Tree of Hope Wish Book, and then
attach the card with your gifts. All gifts need to be
received at the church by Sunday, December 17, to allow
agencies and schools time for distribution to families.

Perfect weather, adorable costumes and lots of
candy—all added up to another successful Trunk or
Treat on October 29! Thanks to Children’s Ministries
and all of those who came out with their trunks on a
very fun afternoon!
Trunk or Treat Was Another (Big) Crowd Pleaser!
Okay—here’s the math. George
Garner will be celebrating his 90th
birthday, and Glenn Geiger will be
celebrating his 93rd birthday! And you
are invited to share the celebration with
both men and their families on Sunday,
November 26, from 2:00-4:00 p.m. in Broadway’s
Fellowship Hall.
And speaking of Broadway, both George and Glenn
are charter members, which means together they have
118 years of shared Broadway memories. Glenn’s
“new church” involvement predates even
George’s—he served as the Treasurer on
the Church Plant committee at First
Christian Church in 1951!
Join the Garner and Geiger families on
November 26 as we celebrate these two
remarkable men, who have shared friendship, church
life and their servant hearts with all of us in the
Broadway family. No gifts please, just your presence
and laughter are requested! Contact Linda
Poehlmann, 234.1950, for more information.
You Are Invited to Attend A 183rd Birthday Party!!
