Summer holiday prices have dropped and visitor’smoney will go much further this year. Prices for hol-iday let apartments (booked in Euros), car hire, eat-ing out and shopping are some of the main savings. One pound will buy 1.3 euros compared with 1.2 thistime last year.

The fantastic news from the holiday experts is that manyBritish holiday hotspots in Spainare still the best value for money, with the resorts along the CostaBlanca being the most popular.

As recently as summer 2013 itwould have cost you around£440 to buy €500 to take on hol-iday, with commission eating upanother chunk of your cash too.Now that €500 costs just £375. Inother words, your spending cost in hol-iday destinations is around 15% cheaperthis year than 2013.

Andrew Brown, of Post Office Travel Money, said:“Holidaymakers travelling to Europe can look forward tobetter value-for-money.”

So far this year, the cost of flights has reduced to a fiveyear low due to the drop in oil prices and experts predictprices will continue to fall, plus families will also benefitwhen air passenger duty is axed from April 1st.

Booking holiday let apartments direct with agents in

Spain makes a massive difference to the savings, as thepurchase would be made in Euros and the conversioninto local currency is realised when using a debit or creditcard. Even booking direct with hotel operators in Spainwould be cheaper than buying the rooms online from theUK.

When visitors arrive in Spain they can find eating out thecheapest it has been for five years. Converting thecost of their favourite tipple back into pounds, theywill notice that the true cost has fallen by around

30p. A pint of beer (on average) in Spain costsonly 2.40€ (a mere £1.85) compared to the UKprice of around £4. The saving on a 7 day holi-day this year will be in the region of 20%,amounting to over £200 per adult.

The good news continues as the strong poundincreases the demand for long-term visitors for the

winter months and for retired people wishing to move

to Spain - where their British pensions can go a lot fur-ther, as well as having the benefit of the wonderfulMediterranean sunshine.

The recession has produced the lowest property pricessince 2004, and predictions indicate that now the markethas “bottomed out” the trend will see an increase for thefirst time in many years. This means there are now somegreat bargains. Now is the time to invest in a Spanishproperty because of the reduced prices and excellentexchange rates.

4 NEWS 21st Jan - 27th Jan

ROAD DEATHS IN JANUARYREACH THREE-YEAR HIGH

Spain's roads are getting more danger-ous, new data shows, with the numberof road deaths in January up 42 percent on last year.

A reported 88 fatalities occurred onSpanish roads in the first month of thisyear according to statistics released bySpain´s national traffic agency (DGT).

Experts fear that the figure marks the startof a downward trend in road safety.

"It shows the number of road tragediesare growing at a dizzying and dangerousproportions," warned Ana Novella, thepresident of traffic watchdog StopAccidents, in a statement released onMonday.

Spain´s Ministry of Transport attributed arise in the number of road accidents to thefact that the nation´s economy was pick-ing up.

It said that traffic circulation across Spainhad increased by three percent over thelast year but that anoutdated transportfleet likely broughtsafety concerns.

The leap in fatalitieswas also blamed onthe fact that weatherconditions thisJanuary were worsethan the year before.

Industry experts warned that a generalrelaxation of road vigilance by authoritieswas also to blame.

"We had a great decade between 2000and 2010 where many very important roadsafety measures were adopted with greatresults," Eugenia Domenech, the presi-dent of the Association of Road TrafficPrevention, told El País.

"But that has been followed by a period ofsheer inertia in the last two to threeyears," she added. "The figures show thatif we are caught off guard then peoplerelax and accidents happen."

The transport ministry announced lastweek that it plans to force heavy transportlorries off busy highways and force themto use toll roads instead.

It will set aside a budget of €10 million($11.4 million) in the coming budget tosubsidize the plan, giving lorry drivers a50 percent discount on toll roads.

The company ‘Aguas Potables de Bernia, S.A.’(Apobersa) who supply water to the Altea Hills urban-ization, has failed to comply with health regulationsaccording to sanitary reports made in 2013 and 2014.

The water deposits were half-buried by mud and vegeta-tion, with condensation due to insufficient ventilation andcorrosion of metallic elements. The wells also had leaksand were not cleaned regularly. In addition, the companydid not have a management and self-supply program; noincident records, or plans in place for sampling, mainte-nance of facilities or even cleaning and disinfection. InJuly 2014 Apobersa already knew that water from wellno. 1 had very high levels of chloride, but did not informthe Health Authority or the Town Hall.

The water supply service should be overseen by theTown Hall, but it has been managed by private compa-nies with nobody controlling them, or the wells. The neg-lect of local governments has been alarming as this prob-lem started 15 years ago. Now the Town Hall wants tocontrol the water supply.

Altea Hills residents, some owners’ communities andeven the operator of the resort ‘Pierre & VacancesPremium Altea Hills’ requested immediate action afterfinding that the water in the resort was horrible, with badtaste and salty aftertaste.

With 187 renewals and 39 new members thetotal now stands at 1,146, just 378 short of the 2014 fig-ure.

Those who stayed on for the meeting enjoyed an enlight-ening and humorous talk by Cheda Panjotovic on histime as a Guide in London and beyond.

The deadline for renewal is the end of March, and exist-ing members have two further opportunities to do so. Thefirst is on Thursday 19th February between 10am and

This slice of history of the British Empire is nolonger remembered by schoolchildren. Rhodesia, nowknown as Zimbabwe, and the story of its origins, alongwith the history of the Empire generally, is no longer afashionable subject for study in these politically correcttimes.

M o r a i r a .What a fan-tastic per-formance itwas, with so

much talent, funand sheer energythat the audiencewere literally danc-ing in the aisles.

Mastroianni Ristorante Avenida Oscar Espla, 16, El Albir

“Absolutely excellent all round”Reviewed 26 January 2015Found this restaurant on the Sunday evening, but couldn't getin as it was packed, we went back on the Monday night (andagain on the Tuesday night!!) and I could see why it was sopopular. Lovely staff, excellent prices, good service and superbvalue for money. Couldn't fault it. Well done, we so enjoyed ourmeals at your restaurant

“Really good food!”Reviewed 3 January 2015We tried the restaurant as some friends told us it was run byreal Italians. I must say the owner is actually really nice and all staff madeus feel very welcome. The menu is only about 11EUR and includes a vast selection ofstarters, mains, desserts and even half a bottle of wine. My wife had the minestrone soup and the bolognese pasta as amain. I had the tricolore salad and a pizza as mains. We bothtried the home made Tiramisu. I can't find anything to complainabout, the soup was delicious and so was the pasta. My salad was also very nice and the pizza reminded me of theoriginal pizzas from Naples. The portions were gigantic and there was no way we could fin-ish them. The owner even gave us a complimentary bruschetta whichwas just right (but too much food!!). We are now regulars!

“Family Favourite”Reviewed 12 January 2015Our family of two adults and two boys aged 10 and 11 love thisItalian restaraunt. It represents great value with set meal at justover €10 each for 3 courses inc Wine. Large menu with spe-cials gives lots of choices. Food is lovely with decent portions.Lastly the service is great, the owner and waiters always in agood humour and up for a joke or laugh. Highly recommend.

“Average food great people ”Reviewed 6 January 2015I have tried this restaurant a few times, encouraged by friendswho are keen. The food is great for those who haven't been toItaly and eaten real quality food, but it is certainly not amazing. The Italian boss is charming enough and the waiters arecheeky enough to provide a nice atmosphere, but this is defi-nitely no where near the best italian food I've eaten.

“great food and open all the time”Reviewed 26 January 2015this is good for a meal with a feeling like home !! bit noiseywhen bars open but all the same good food good price andyou get plenty

“best fish and chips”Reviewed 14 January 2015excellent service and good food at reasonable prices placeclean staff friendly and helpful the outdoor eating area is agreat suntrap to help you top up your tan and while away thehours

“service always friendly”Reviewed 7 January 2015Been here twice, good freshly cooked food, service alwayswarm and friendly, meals can be big though but lovely can'tfault it.

“love the fish tea”Reviewed 6 January 2015it made to order and the staff singing along in the kitchen inthe background is bril it a bit overpriced though

“Absolutely fantastic Chippy”Reviewed 28 December 2014Went there for a family lunch. Must say we left there absolutelyfull. The fish was really good and the chips we're freshly madeno frozen ones. Would highly recommend this place

“Really good chippy”Reviewed 29 November 2014Spent a week in Benidorm on half board, so wanted to findsomewhere to call for lunch. Rays chippy is just off theMediterraneo at the far end of the Levante Beach (away fromthe old town) down a little side street. It's a small chippy butthe food (we had fish and chips) was really good. Well worth alook!

“A True Taste of Home”Reviewed 28 November 2014We visited this on a recent holiday and, as always, found thefood to be as mouth-watering as usual. The aroma goes roundyour heart.

Haddock, Chips, Bread & Butter, Tea. (Real chips as well, notthe frozen gunk that other places serve!!) What more couldyou want? (Maybe a pickled onion???) They celebrate either30 or 40 years next year and the deserve every single plaudit.Well done.

So go along and give it a go!

“Delicious home made food”Reviewed 6 January 2015The Lowry is a great place to go for traditional English pubgrub. It is all homemade and the roast dinners cannot be fault-ed. The food is consistently good and service excellent too.

“Go Gastro !!”Reviewed 3 January 2015A really great place for everyone. Fab in the summer with greatoutdoor space and really cosy in the winter with warmth andcharm and a very cosy sofa ! Food is very good with a lot ofchoice, (Chilli Burger and ribs are my favourite). Angela andLouise are always pleased to see you even if you just pop in fora good glass of red or a pint ! Never disappoints and we alwaysleave with smile.

“A1 place!”Reviewed 2 January 2015You snooze, you lose! If you were not there on New Year's Eve,you missed a top night. We danced, we ate, a little drink or twoand we had a fantastic night! The staff are lovely, the surround-ings amazing and they looked after my ipad free-of-charge for 2days - what can I say?Seriously, the food at the Lowry is absolutely and totally excel-lent and if you don't go you will miss a treat.

How about a two-bed, two-bath villa in the Spanish coun-tryside, not far from the beach of Moraira now only£89,500 compared to £135,000 in 2006?

Estate agents are talking up the property market in holi-day hotspots, promising that the collapse in prices is overand that buyers need to act now to bag a bargain. But fig-ures from Eurostat, the EU's data agency, show thatprices continued to fall throughout 2014 across much ofSpain. The British are the biggest foreign buyers of prop-

erties in Spain, owning an estimated 170,000 homes inthe country, mostly along the Costa Blanca. 2015 ispromised to be a record year for property sales by theBrits in Spain as reflected in the latest economic indicatorproduced by the European Commission, the economicconfidence of Spain in January 2015 is standing at itshighest level since March 2007.

For anyone retiring and wanting a place in the sun, isnow the time to buy? The head of the InternationalMonetary Fund, Christine Lagarde, thinks the country'seconomy is returning to health. "Spain has turned thecorner," she said, predicting economic growth this year of1%. Buyers who are really focused on price can pick up verylow prices if they go inland, if you are prepared to beaway from the coast, savings are a lot bigger. Prices arefrequently half of what they used to be at the peak andnow with a strong pound the exchange rate makes buy-ing in Spain even more attractive. Retiring to Spain notonly allows people to free up their equity and live cheap-er on their cash but also with pensions stretching muchfurther on the daily living costs not to mention the sunny

healthier climate the good times of retiring to the sunseem to be coming back stronger than ever before. If you’re looking to buy or rent visit us at Property Plus forthe easiest property search specific to the Costa Blancawww.vistacostablanca.com Or call 634310665

ARIES (March 21st-April 20th)

You feel its time to get plans up and running now. You’ve talked them throughform every angle, and you’ve patiently weighed up all pros and cons. Now it’stime for action. You’re like a coiled spring waiting to erupt, so try to remain mel-low as you seem a tad uptight.

TAURUS (April 21st-May 21st)

There have been a lot of new projects milling about in your brain for a while now,so maybe its time to dust them off, get the ball rolling and put them into practice. You’re moving in the right direction and others are more than happy to help.Result!!

GEMINI (May 22nd-June 21st)

Try not to argue for your limitations today or you may unearth even more. Try tostay focused and confident and go after goals with gusto. With the moon in yourtwelfth house, life will be quieter than usual, but it won’t be long before it all bal-ances out.

CANCER (June 22nd-July 23rd)

Life is finally levelling out in all areas, so work money health and love should allbe going in the right direction. Get mundane tasks out of the way as fast as youcan, and it then leaves you the rest of the day to do all of the things that appealto you most. Enjoy.

LEO (July 24th-August 23rd)

It’s an emotionally challenging day where you’ll swing from extreme highs toextreme lows in the blink of an eye, but yet you’ll still enjoy it. You don t mind alittle upheaval in your life, and you certainly won’t be backing down from heatedarguments. Go Leo.

VIRGO (August 24th-September 23rd)

You could experience a confidence crisis today if new projects you’ve involved in,that you don’t really understand, lack and sort of major progress. Your creativepotential is good, especially round the home zone, so maybe a hobby couldbecome an earner.

LIBRA (September 24th-October 23rd)

Routines feel too restrictive today and you’d rather have the freedom to pursuewhatever it is that takes your fancy at any given time. It’s hard to concentrate onwhat you feel are irrelevant issues so you won’t, but just be careful or you maymiss a vital clue.

SCORPIO (October 24th-November 22nd)

Keeping hopes and dreams realistic has always been hard for you as you like toreach for the stars in everything you do, but if you rein it in today there’s no rea-son why dreams cant come true. There’s a bright future ahead of you, so take itat a slower pace and enjoy the ride.

SAGITTARIUS (November 23rd-December 21st)

As you take time out to think about your hopes dreams and long term goals, you’ll be more than happy to let the responsibilities of your life slip a bit today. It’s a temporary respite. Why not meet a friend for lunch and go shopping in theafternoon. Be frivolous tonight.

CAPRICORN (December 22nd-January 20th)

Enjoy the positive friendly actions of others today, and be glad they’re in your life. You’re a bit quieter and more subdued than you’ve been in a while today, butthere’s no doubting your sincerity. When it comes to love talk though, you’ll lay iton with a shovel.

AQUARIUS (January 21st-February 19th)

It’s just as well you’re quite organised today because you’ll be so busy you’llhardly have time to breathe. Neither will you be able to give certain matters asmuch attention as you’d wish. Try to avoid disputes that have nothing to do withyou. Have a quiet night.

PISCES (February 20th-March 20th)

You’re happy to spend as much time as you can with loved ones today, and oth-ers’ invitations will only bore you. I’m sure like me, you’d rather put your feet upin front of the fire instead of waiting in the cold night air for a taxi after a night onthe town.

ASTON MARTIN SUES SUPPLIER Aston Martin Lagonda, James Bond'sfavourite British luxury car manufacturer,is suing a supplier alleged to have copiedits designs. It claims the Coventry-based EnvisageGroup used its wheel and headlightdesigns as well as its logo. It also accus-es the company of setting set up a designbusiness using confidential informationand using its trademarked designs on avideo that is in the public domain.Envisage Group is the parent company ofEnvisage Manufacturing andVisioneering, which are also named inthe High Court writ. All three are accused of breaching anobligation of confidence by unlawfullyusing confidential information. AstonMartin Lagonda (AML) is demandingdamages for infringement of copyright, design rights and trademarks.Last year, Envisage began designing andmanufacturing its own bespoke luxurycars and produced a rival supercar calledthe Speedback GT, costing around£500,000.Aston Martin alleges that avideo promoting the new arm of the busi-ness includes images of a car bearing itsown trademarked designs, including itsalloy wheel and headlight.

It has accused the company of planning tomake a car using those designs as well asa sign which is “identical” to its distinctivewinged logo. The writ alleges that the supplier has pur-posefully copied its logo “to cause thepublic to make a connection” with AstonMartin, potentially causing customers tobe “confused”.It says: “There is a clear exploitation onthe coat-tails of the Aston Martin Lagondatrademarks.”The famed Warwick-based manufacturerhas used Visioneering to supply its design

services since 2007and EnvisageManufacturing tosupply parts andtooling since 2011.It claims that bothcompanies hadaccess to copies ofconfidential datafiles containingdesigns of its past, current and futurecars and that thesefiles have been usedby the rival business.Aston Martin says it

owns the copyright of its designs and datafiles. The writ states: “It is commonly under-stood within the motor vehicle industrythat Computer Aided Design data andstandards for the parts depicted therein isconfidential.”It accuses Envisage of “unlawfully” mak-ing use of confidential information andstates that as a result, it has suffered lossand damage and is entitled to claim dam-ages.The writ says that on entering AstonMartin premises, all employees of the

defendants were required to sign a certifi-cate of confidentiality, which includes ref-erences to “trade secrets, technical dataand know-how”.In 2013, when asked about the level ofaccess Visioneering staff had to a virtualprivate network containing confidentialdesigns, employee Bill Walsh insisted thatno information had been used inappropri-ately“Please rest assured at no time during thelocation of the AML systems in theEnvisage office have they been used forthe creation, modification or storage ofany design geometry data for any cus-tomers other than Aston Martin,” he wrote. The writ states that Aston Martin has pro-duced “some of the most famous motorvehicles in the world”.It says that all of its cars produced since1932 bear its logo on the bonnet, theboot, steering wheel and the engine. And it adds that the cars have appearedin 11 James Bond films, includingGoldfinger. Diamonds are Forever andCasino Royale.High profile customers include the Princeof Wales and actor Rowan Atkinson. The Envisage Group could not be con-tacted for comment.

LIVE SIX NATIONS RUGBY UNIONWales v England Wales v England (Kick-off 8.05pm). John Inverdale introduces coverage of the opening match ofthis year's championship, which takes place at the Millennium Stadium. The tournament seems difficult to predictthis time around, with Ireland joining these two nations as the favourites, but given the number of injuries sufferedby England in recent weeks, the Welsh will expect to make the most of home advantage and start with a victory.

"Everything came good on the day of thecompetition," the 29-year-oldJohannessen told news agency NTB."There was very little to separate the topthree countries."

At total of 24 chefs competed in the pres-tigious competition inwhich contestants areexpected to "demon-strate creativity, spon-taneity and the masteryof their art."

This year contestantswere asked to prepare aguinea fowl dish along-side a fish and vegetablerecipe using fario trout.

The competition takesplace in front of a liveaudience of 2,500 peo-

NORWAY DEPORTS MOSTFOREIGN CRIMINALS

Norwegian police last deported a recordnumber of foreign criminals last year, asthe country’s right-wing coalition govern-ment continues to push through an evertougher stance.

“With the help of our competent policedistricts, we have managed to deport arecord number of foreigners,” MagneLøvø in Norway’s Police ImmigrationService told Norwegian broadcasterNRK. “Many of them had been chargedfor multiple criminal offences, and as wehave expelled them, they cannot returnto Norway.”

Karin Naess, from theSouthern BuskerudPolice District, whichhas doubled the num-ber of criminalsdeported in recentyears, told NRK thatthe majority of thosedeported were EU citi-zens.

“The vast majority ofthose we have underarrest are with usbecause of drugcrimes, robbery, andburglary. Once we

have them in jail, we aim to send themquickly out of the country so that they willcommit new offences.”

Last October Norwegian Justice MinisterAnders Anundsen, from the anti-immigra-tion Progress Party, said that the govern-ment would spend an additional 200mNorwegian kroner ($26m) to furtherincrease the rate at which foreign crimi-nals are expelled.

“The Government's aim is for foreigncriminals and those without legal resi-dence to be deported faster,” he said.

TRAVEL AROUNDThe ancient mountain village of Sella (419m/1375ft)is located 18Km inland from the coastal town ofVillajoyosa on the Spanish Costa Blanca. Thissmall and authentic village is surrounded by mag-nificent mountain peaks and ridges, almond ter-races, forested valley trails and dramatic gorges, making it a perfect location for walkers. Sella is alsofamous for having some of the best rock climbing inEurope. In the 19th century cholera was widespread inSpain and even small rural villages did not escape. The worst epidemic here in Sella was in 1885 andlasted for 19 days - 18 people died and 45 wereseriously infected. At this time the main routebetween Villajoyosa and Alcoy passed throughSella, so, to minimize the spread of the disease(and probably from a traveller’s perspective, to minimizeany chance of contracting it!) an alternative route thatbypassed the village was created.Sella is very convenient in terms of accommodation, transport and cost. It is only about a one hour drive fromAlicante airport. Benidorm is only 40 minutes away bycar. The Costa Blanca has a wide choice of all types ofaccommodation according to your taste and budget, ranging from package deals in Benidorm hotels to apart-ments and villas in Sella, Finestrat and Villa Joyosa. Asthere is a lot of climbing outside the main valley it is def-initely worth hiring a car to make the most of your holiday.

The Cholera WalkThe Cholera Walk is a short circular walk which retracesmuch of the ancient bypass and takes you past the mainspring and picnic area (Font Mayor) so ifit’s a nice day, consider a picnic.Alternatively you could seek refresh-ments at one of the local bars or restau-rants. Along the way there are manyviewpoints and historical locations, oneof our favourites is the old bridge, untilthe arrival of motor cars and when thenew bridge was built in the 1920’s, thisancient bridge was the main route intothe village of Sella for anyone coming upfrom the coast. Also note, as you lookdown at the bridge from the main road there are theremains of another construction on the right hand side. Two stone archways are clearly visible; this is believed tobe all that remains of an ancient watermill that oncestood on this site.As you approach the village, you cannot fail to notice themighty Puig Campana mountain (that’s Valencian for BellPeak) which althoughis some way off, fromthis angle it appearsto look down overSella like somemighty guardian.Wherever you are inthe area it’s easy todistinguish the PuigCampana, firstlybecause of its hugemass and secondlybecause of the notch. The notch is called

Roldan’s Notch and the story (apparently true) is that agiant called Roldan use to live on the mountain. Roldanhad a very beautiful wife, in fact she was so beautiful thatit angered the Gods and they were so jealous of herbeauty that they condemned her to die at sunset! Roldan, who loved his wife very much, was furious. As sunsetapproached, he could nolonger control his angerand he kicked the top of themountain, creating thenotch that we see today. Bycreating the notch, it meantthat as the sun went down,a ray of sunlight was visiblefor an extra few minutes, thus giving Roldan and hiswife an extra couple of min-

utes together before shedied. The piece of rock that hekicked out landed in thesea and is what we nowcall Benidorm Island. It is possible to walk up

onto the summit of the Puig Campana(1408m/4619ft) but you should allow a full day forthis little outing and consider a guide. The walk will bring you into the village, and youwill find yourself at The Plaza Mayor (mainsquare) which is in the heart of the village. This iswhere the local game, Pelota (handball) is playedand also where, during fiestas, most of the cele-brations take place there is a small market here onWednesdays and Fridays as well as 2 Banks withan ATM (good to know), a Small Shop/Butcher,Tobacconist, the Doctors Surgery, the Sella TownHall, Postbox and a Public Telephone. What we

didn’t mention because you really can’t miss it is, SellaChurchThis small but beautifully decorated Church of Santa Anais also in the Plaza Mayor and if the doors are open itwarrants a look inside.

Played annually, the format of the Championship issimple: each team plays every other team once, with home field advantage alternating from oneyear to the next. Two points are awarded for a win,one for a draw and none for a loss and unlike mostother rugby union competitions the bonus pointsystem is not used.

Victory in every game results in a 'Grand Slam' andback-to-back Grand Slams have been won on fiveoccasions. Wales achieved the first one in 1908and 1909, England have done it three times in 1913and 1914, 1923 and 1924 and 1991 and 1992 whileFrance did it in 1997 and 1998. England hold therecord for the number of Grand Slams won with 12,followed by Wales with 11, France with nine,Scotland with three and Ireland with two.

Victory by any Home Nation over the other threeHome Nations constitutes as a 'Triple Crown'. TheTriple Crown has twice been won on four consecu-tive occasions, once by Wales between 1976 and1979 and once by England between 1995 and1998. England hold the record for the number ofTriple Crowns won with 23, followed by Wales with20 and Scotland and Ireland both with ten.

Although this achievement has long been a featureof the tournament, it was not until 2006 that a phys-ical trophy, commissioned by the Royal Bank ofScotland, was awarded. Meanwhile, the last-placednation at the end of the tournament is said to havewon a purely figurative Wooden Spoon.

Several individual competitions take place underthe umbrella of the Six Nations tournament. Theoldest is the Calcutta Cup, which has been runningsince 1879 and is contested annually betweenEngland and Scotland. The Millennium Trophy has been awarded to thewinner of the game between England and Irelandwith the first presented in 1989, and in the sameyear, the Centenary Quaich was contestedbetween Ireland and Scotland for the first time.

Since 2007, France and Italy have also contestedfor their own silverware - the Giuseppe GaribaldiTrophy. It was created to honour the 200th anniver-sary of the birth of Giuseppe Garibaldi, who helpedunify Italy and was also a French military general.
