THE CATHOLIC COMMUNITY OF SOUTH COLUMBUS COLUMBUS, OHIO
FROM THE PRIEST
40 days. 40 days is a special period in the Bible – in the Old Testament we see God judging the earth and those who live there and casting them in a great flood because of rejecting God...Noah and His family were saved because they obeyed God and stayed in the ark for 40 days. Afterwards, God made a covenant with Noah and promised He would not destroy the human people again... We see Moses (after God freed the Israelites from Egypt and slavery) going up to Mount Sinai and remained there praying and fasting for 40 days and after 40 days, God made a covenant with Moses and the people... Elijah went into the wilderness and stayed for 40 days in Mount Sinai after he saw the sin of idolatry in Israel. God spoke to Elijah and set a goal for Elijah to pass on the work of restoring worship to God alone! Finally we see Jesus who, after anointed by the Spirit in the Jordan River, went to Judea’s wilderness (led by the Spirit) for 40 days to get ready for the mission which God the Father gave Him – to offer Himself as the perfect sacrifice for our sins! Through His suffering and death on the cross, He won for us a new covenant with God! But why were these men out for 40 days? Like ourselves, we get tested to see if we’re ready for any task at hand; God tests His servants to see if they are ready to be used by Him! And Jesus was no exception of being tested – the devil even tried to test Jesus to choose His will over God’s will, but Jesus rejects His temptations while being thirsty and hungry! As soon as John the Baptist completed his ministry (with many people against him), Jesus began His ministry in His hometown of Galilee where He preached that the time of restoration by the prophets was now fulfilled by Him and the kingdom of God is at hand! The word “kingdom” is more than just an area of land, and God sent His Son, Jesus Christ, to bring us into His heavenly Kingdom – a kingdom of justice, peace and holiness. We enter the kingdom of God by doing two things – repent and believe! To repent means to turn away from sin and change our ways (thinking, attitude, dispositions and the way we live our lives) and our hearts in order to follow God’s way of truth and goodness. To believe is to take Jesus at His word and recognize that God loves all of us; that He sent His only Son to free us from sin and other desires! God sent His Son as THE sacrifice to bring us back to a relationship with our Father in Heaven! May we repent (change) and believe in the good news of Jesus Christ and be filled with the Holy Spirit, to have the strength and courage to embrace God’s will in everything we do!• Pray for Pope Francis and all those who lead the Church, especially Bishop Brennan• Pray for those affected by natural disasters and acts of violence (COVID-19; violence due to racism; Myanmar military coup; Japan
earthquake; Erbil Rocket attack; Yemen; 27 students kidnapped in Nigeria school; snowstorms in the US)• Pray for the repose of the soul of Ruth Scholl who passed away. Eternal rest grant unto Ruth, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon
her. May she rest in peace.• Joint Parish Council met this past week; details will be in next weekend’s bulletin.• There are opportunities for Confession every Wednesday from 5:30-6:30 p.m. with Adoration and Benediction at St. Mary.• Stations of the Cross will be at St. Ladislas February 26 at 7:00 p.m.• We are participating in the 40 Days of Adoration with the parishes of the diocese where different parishes throughout the diocese are
having Adoration, Benediction and Confessions. Our date is March 12 from 7:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. Sign-up sheets are in the back of St. Mary’s church.
• Just a reminder that the Catholic Men’s Conference is February 27, 2021 from 9:00 a.m.-Noon. This will be an online event and we are having a viewing session for our parishioners at St. Mary’s. Contact the parish office for more details.
• We will begin a new Stewardship program to increase online giving soon. Through a generous benefactor, any donation done online will be matched at their respective parish up to $50,000! More details to follow in the bulletin!

FIRST SUNDAY OF LENT FEBRUARY 21, 2021

DISCIPLE MAKER INDEX SURVEY – We need 100% Participation/ENCUESTA DEL ÍNDICE DE
FABRICANTES DE DISCÍPULOS – Necesitamos una participación del 100%
Our South End Parishes will be participating in the diocesan-wide Disciple Maker Index (DMI) Survey between now and March 22. This nationally recognized survey has been administered at parishes around the United States and Canada since 2013. As part of the Diocese of Columbus’ Real Presence Real Future planning process, we will participate in this survey during Lent. The results from our parish survey will not only be used for information and planning for our own parish but will also be included in national results which track trends, growth and Church-related opportunities nationwide. The survey seeks to provide parishioners an opportunity to reflect on their spiritual growth as well as provide parish leadership with invaluable insights regarding a parish’s strengths and opportunities. You can take the survey online at https://www.catholicleaders.org/columbusdmi or via a paper copy available at the parish through March 22. This is an exciting opportunity for our parishes, and I hope you will participate.
