Dear Parishioners,On Monday we will again celebrate, as a nation, Martin

Luther King Jr. Day. You may recall that last year at this time we found ourselves sitting with the disturbing truth revealed in the Boston Globe’s Spotlight series on Rac-ism, namely, that Boston’s reputation for being the “most racist city” in our country is not only “real,” but most probably “deserved.”

In light of continuing racist attitudes in our nation, this past November the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops is-sued a timely Pastoral Letter Against Racism: “Open Wide Our Hearts: The Enduring Call to Love.” In that letter they acknowledge that many groups have been the target of racial and ethnic prejudice in our country. They list “Irish, Italians, Mexicans, Puerto Ricans, Poles, Jews, Chinese and Jap-anese” and underscore the rise today in anti-Semitism and anti-Muslim sen-timent. They also briefly expand on the history and contemporary experi-ences of three groups that have been and are still subject to extreme forms of racism: Native Americans, African Americans and Hispanics

At the conclusion of that expo-sition, the letter rightly points out that “most people would not consid-er themselves to be racist. A person might admit to being prejudiced but certainly not racist. As Christians, we know it is our duty to love others. St. Paul reminds us that we live by the Spirit, and the “fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, gener-osity, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control” (Gal 5:22-23). We must be honest with ourselves. Each of us should examine our conscience and ask if these fruits are real-ly present in our attitudes about race. Or, rather, do our attitudes reflect mistrust, impatience, anger, distress, dis-comfort, or rancor?”

Given these continuing negative racist attitudes, even among Catholics, the Pastoral Letter encourages all the faithful to be “missionary disciples, carrying forth the

message of fraternal charity and human dignity.” It also asks parishes “to fight the evil of racism by educating themselves, reflecting on their personal thoughts and actions, listening to the experience of those who have been affected by racism, and by developing and supporting programs that help repair the damages caused by racial discrimination.”

Certainly, I invite you to read and reflect on this powerful pastoral letter easily found on line on the USCCB website. My hope is simple: that those prayers that will surely bubble up in your heart as you read and reflect upon this letter might then lead you to become involved in some way with our Peace, Justice and Reconciliation Commission and its efforts. Together we can then forge pathways for how we, as a parish community, might best continue to engage in “Dismantling Racism” – the name of the parish program that our P, J & R Commission held last year around this time.

Is it not time for us to build on these initial efforts to com-bat racism and do much more? We cannot do that, however, without your support. So please help to us all to continue to call one another to “Open Wide our Hearts.”With hope for increased racial justice and civil rights for all,

Fr. Joe

P. Joe
