From The Pastor’s Desk ceived a dona on from the town's most successful lawyer. The person in charge of contribu ons called him to persuade him to contribute. "Our research shows that out of a yearly income of at least $500,000, you give not a penny to charity. Wouldn't you like to give back to the community in some way?" The lawyer mulled this over for a moment and replied, "First, did your research also show that my mother is dying a er a long illness, and has medical bills that are several

mes her annual income?" Embarrassed, the United Way rep mumbled, "Um...no." "--or that my brother, a disabled veteran, is blind and con-fined to a wheelchair?" The stricken United Way rep began to stammer out an apology but was interrupted, "--or that my sister's husband died in a traffic accident," the lawyer's voice rising in indig-na on, "leaving her penniless with three children?!" The humiliated United Way rep, completely beaten, said simply, "I had no idea..." On a roll, the lawyer cut him off once again: "--so if I don't give any money to them, why should I give any to you?!?"

#2 – A guy walks into a post office one day to see a middle-aged, balding man standing at the counter methodically placing "Love" stamps on bright pink envelopes with hearts all over them. He then takes out a perfume bo le and starts spraying scent all over them. His curiosity ge ng the be er of him, he goes up to the balding man and asks him what he is doing. The man says "I'm sending out 1,000 Valen ne cards signed, 'Guess who?'" "But why?" asks the man. "I'm a divorce lawyer," the man replies.

#4 – A dog ran into a butcher shop and grabbed a roast off the counter. Fortunately, the butcher recognized the dog as belonging to a neighbor of his. The neighbor happened to be a lawyer. Incensed at the the , the butcher called up his lawyer neighbor and said, "Hey, if your dog stole a roast from my butcher shop, would you be liable for the cost of the meat?" The lawyer replied, "Of course, how much was the roast?" "$7.98." said the butcher. A few days later the butcher received a check in the mail for $7.98. A ached to it was an invoice that read: Legal Consulta-

Dear Parishioners,

This weekend is Safe Haven Weekend. Safe Haven Week-end is one weekend within the liturgical calendar, imple-mented within a diocese and its parishes, to raise awareness and directly address, from the pulpit, the harms of pornogra-phy on individuals, marriages, families and society. It also is an opportunity to provide resources that support and protect individuals, marriages, and families in overcoming pornogra-phy and making their homes safe. The Office of Family Life is taking the lead within the diocese for the conduct of an ini-

al, limited-scope event, on this weekend of August 17-18, 2019 in advance of the new school year.

This ini a ve was inspired by the USCCB’s formal state-ment “Create in Me a Clean Heart: A Pastoral Response to Pornography” where they explain that “The use of pornogra-phy by anyone in the home deprives the home of its role as a safe haven and has nega ve effects throughout a family’s life and across genera ons.

Safe Haven Sunday was conducted for the first me in 2018 through the leadership of the Archdiocese of New Orle-ans with 65 parishes par cipa ng.

As your pastor, I have become increasingly concerned over the years of the growing level of use of internet pornography among penitents, especially our youth. Many are struggling with addic on to pornography and impurity.

While there are a number of so ware programs that a empt to block pornography or monitor a person’s use of the internet, Covenant Eyes is perhaps the best. It is a Chris-

an based program that I have recommended to penitents and those I counsel in my office. Covenant Eyes is an Internet Accountability and Filtering program. It gives parents the ability to monitor and block their children’s access to unsight-ly and morally corrupt websites. And for spouses who also struggle with internet pornography, they can monitor each other as well.

But, it is not the magic fix to the problem of pornography in families. Parents need to have a frank discussion of this issue with their children. Spouses also need to have this same conversa on. Don’t always assume that husbands and wives will never be unfaithful in this area. Pornography is highly persuasive and toxic for marriages.

Take this very serious folks. If we want to ba le this gar-bage in our families and marriage, there are tools out there to help. Also, let it be said that without fervent, daily prayer and frequent recep on of the sacraments, we will not be able to withstand the flood of tempta on that comes from this disease. Be brave and check out CovenantEyes.com.

And now some funnies:

#1 – A local United Way office realized that it had never re-
