We are a group of dedicated people whose only goal is to make our planet a better place to live for ourselves and our children. We want to help manufacturers who have a desire to bring an environmentally safe, low cost conventional plastic product to market that has exactly the same characteristics as the original. Those who seek the type of product that will not have any negative effects or dangerous byproducts that would be harmful to the land around us. These companies can benefit from the knowledge we have gained through more than a 100-years of employee experience and “know how” in the plastics industry. Our consultants have over 400 patents to their name, two of which were held under secrecy orders by the Department of Defense for over a decade. They have been court appointed experts involving plastics. They are Licensed engineers in the states of Delaware and New Jersey. They are Fellows in good standing of the (SPE) Society of Plastics Engineers. Our chemical engineer is recognized in the Who’s Who in the World. BIOtech Products, LLC., was born out of need. The sign industry longed for a biodegradable PVC substrate for their advertising businesses that was both durable/long lasting and earth friendly when disposed. Mr. John Schleicher, Jr., President and CEO of Ultraflex Systems, Inc. of Randolph, New Jersey had the vision and insight to put a team together to come up with the solution. What they invented was a product called “BIOflex®”. It is truly the world’s first 100% landfill biodegradable PVC sign substrate in the market today. After winning several awards for this product, John and his team decided to apply the organometallic technology that created BIOflex® we now call BIOchem® to other types of plastics such as Polypropylene, Polystyrene, Polyethylene, Olefin Copolymers, PVAc, and EVA polymers. Products like garbage bags, agricultural film, sanitary napkins, disposable diapers, medical equipment, boot and sneaker soles, packaging material, even vinyl siding to name a few can now be made biodegradable. These products benefit from the BIOchem technology whether they are flexible or rigid PVC or filled/unfilled thermoplastics. They can now be made to be 100% anaerobic landfill biodegradable in a controlled landfill per the ASTM D5526 guidelines. These landfills are where “valuable” methane is harvested to produce “free energy” replacing expensive fossil fuel. BIOtech Products took the idea of anaerobic landfill biodegradable conventional plastics and ran with it and has not looked back!. The time is here, the time is now for a brand new series of conventional plastics made with BIOchem®. Frequently asked questions about BIOchem® and other “green” issues we have received here at BIOtech

What is BIOchem™? BIOchem® is an additive that when added to your resin will render it landfill degradable. What is BIOchem® made of? It is a titanate mix with a linear low density polyethylene carrier. Doesn’t plastic last forever? Plastic in its unaltered state is non-biodegradable, but when it is manufactured with BIOchem® it becomes degradable. How does BIOchem® make the plastic landfill degradable? Traditional plastic does not biodegrade because the molecular structure is too complex for micro-organisms to break down and metabolize. Biochem® attracts the micro-organisms to colonize on the plastic. Stimulating them to secrete an enzyme that simplifies the molecular structure of the plastic. At this

point the micro-organisms are able to metabolize the plastic and produce soluble chloride. When BIOchem® is added to the polymer does it change the strength? No, most consumers will not be able to differentiate between the product with Biochem® and the one with out. Will the plastic start to breakdown with the BIOchem® additive? This is where BIOchem® is at its best. It does not affect the shelf life of the product whatsoever. You would never know the difference! Are plastics with BIOchem® recyclable? Yes, BIOchem® is recyclable where appropriate facilities are available. Where will plastics with BIOchem® degrade? It will degrade only in a controlled landfill per ASTM D5526 where there is little or no oxygen and a little moisture and where the methane is captured. Is it true that landfills are designed so that nothing is able to biodegrade? Modern landfills are designed to only retard the biodegradation process, not stop it completely. Is there any proof that plastic with BIOchem® does degrade? Yes, a well respected independent research laboratory has conducted tests on plastics containing BIOchem®. Aren’t bio-based products more environmentally friendly than BIOchem®? No. Bio-based products consume valuable agricultural land that traditionally has been used for the food supply chain. Crop rotation is not practiced for bio-

based crops therefore additional chemical fertilizers are introduced into the soil that leaches into the groundwater. This contaminated ground water collects into major water-ways causing “dead-zones” that have resulted in fish kills and the disruption of major ecosystems. Harvesting and converting agricultural products into bio-based plastics (PLA) consumes anywhere from 20% to 40% more energy than traditional plastic resin production. When you consider all of the factors or metrics involved in the production of bio-based products versus BIOchem®. We are proud to state that BIOchem® is much more environmentally friendly.

Are bio-based products biodegradable? BIO-based products are only compostable. This means that in order for these products to biodegrade they must be sent to an industrial compost facility.

Less than 3% of all commercial landfills in the USA are composting landfills. They require a very high heat index and these are only achievable within the industrial composting facilities. The introduction of bio-based products into either the plastic recycling system or paper recycling system will contaminate the system, making all of its contents unusable.

What is 21 times more powerful than carbon dioxide for trapping atmospheric heat?The answer isn’t Superman, it’s methane, and Fujifilm’s South Carolina complex is taking it out of circulation, so to speak, and using it to power 40 percent of their 500-acre Greenwood complex, which contains five high-technology manufacturing plants, a research facility and Fujifilm’s largest distribution center.

The methane comes from a local landfill, and Fujifilm plans to use slightly less than 200 billion BTU’s of it per year to power two boilers adapted to burn either methane or natural gas.Fujifilm, which began its South Carolina manufacturing operations in 1988, is working with Methane Credit, established in 2000 as a subsidiary of the Terra Verde Group. Greenwood County, which owns the landfill, licensed Methane Credit to sell the gas in exchange for installing the infrastructure needed to cap, extract, purify and deliver the gas via a two-mile pipeline running alongside county roads about three feet deep.It’s a win-win for all parties, since Greenwood County is required by the South Carolina Dept. of Health and Environmental Control (DHEC) to burn off the gas at intervals to prevent its becoming an explosive and health hazard, as well as a public nuisance due to the odor. It’s also a win for the environment, since burning the landfill gas for electricity is expected to prevent 10,000 tons of carbon dioxide emissions.

Currently, Greenwood County uses a flare system to burn landfill gas, but that burning creates other environmental problems, not the least of which is mercury and tritium (a radioactive isotope) deposition in soils and waterways. Mercury from landfills is in the form of methyl mercury, one of the most dangerous and biologically active neurotoxins in the environment. According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, or EPA, methane is now more prevalent in earth’s atmosphere than at any time in the past 400,000 years, and most of it is the result of anthropogenic activity. Currently, 485 methane recovery projects are delivering 12 billion kilowatt hours of electricity and 85 billion cubic feet of gas to run industrial processes and the like. The fact that Fujifilm uses landfill methane puts the company way ahead of the curve in terms of sustainability. And, in case you’re wondering, Fuji doesn’t just make film. It makes products for the printing industry, medical imaging products and projection screens.
