NOVEMBER 3, 2019 — THIRTY-FIRST SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME (YEAR C)

SAINT BARTHOLOMEW’S PARISH

T oday’s reading from the book of Wisdom presents an image of a patient God who rebuke[s] offenders little by little (Wisdom

12:2), an image endorsed by the psalmist, singing of how the LORD is “slow to anger and of great kindness, and compassionate toward all his works” (Psalm 145:8, 9). The crowd with Jesus, however, grumbles when they see Jesus’s kindness and compassion extended to Zacchaeus, who was not just a tax collector, but the “chief tax collector”—a title that surely emphasizes his standing as a sinner to be scorned. In the second reading, Saint Paul urges the Thessalonians to be “worthy” of God’s calling, so that “the name of our Lord Jesus may be glorified in you” (2 Thessalonians 1:12); such people, unlike the crowd in the Gospel, would rejoice at Zacchaeus’s determination to change his life after encountering Jesus.

STEWARDSHIP BY THE BOOK

We are called to be good stewards of our personal vocations. St. Paul’s prayer for the Thessalonians is therefore ours, too—“that our God may make us worthy of his calling and powerfully bring to fulfillment every good purpose and every effort of faith.”

QUESTION OF THE WEEK

“During the next week, what could you do to welcome someone who usually feels excluded?”

EUCHARISTIC ADORATION

All are invited to contemplate, to adore, and to pray to Jesus Christ before the Blessed Sacrament every first Friday of the month. Hours of exposition are from 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Please sign-up on-line. Adoration is a sign of devotion to and worship of Jesus Christ who is fully present to us in the Consecrated Host.

As the Lord said to Peter the night before His Crucifixion, “So you could not keep watch with me for one hour? (Matthew 26:40)”

“TOUGH LOVE”

The first reading tells us that the God of all the universe is a merciful God who loves all creatures, not just enough to keep them in existence, but enough to give sinners the chance to repent. God, who made all things, has the right to punish our transgressions. Instead, God gives us warnings and reminders to lead us to repentance.

Warnings are found in God's word, in the scriptures, and in Jesus. Besides the Ten Commandments, we also have the books of the law, which can be warnings that even the smallest of sins need to be repented. White lies, for example, are usually told to keep from hurting someone's feelings. When we get used to telling white lies, however, we can be inclined to tell other lies, such as those told to protect ourselves. Those lies not only make it harder for people to trust us, they also keep us from facing our faults and taking responsibility for our actions.

Jesus also warns us about sin, both in his teaching and when he forgives sinners. In today's Gospel Jesus has dinner with the tax collector, who demonstrates his repentance by offering to repay those he has extorted. Jesus tells Zachaeus and the bystanders that he came to save the lost. But part of being saved is the intention not to get lost again.

And what about "reminders"--the results of sin that usually catch up with us? The sin of arrogance can lead a driver to think he can ignore the speed limit. But when he has to pay a speeding ticket, that is the reminder that his arrogance, not the speeding, was a sin. If we ignore those reminders, we may suffer eternal consequences. If we think of the results of sin as God's "tough love," perhaps they will remind us to sin no more.

ADVENT CONCERT NOTICE

Mark your calendars! Please join us for our Advent Concert on Sunday, December 8th, at 2:00 p.m. in the church. The theme of the concert is “Day of Peace.” It will be filled with music to lift our hearts as we anticipate the birth of Christ.

We are always looking for singers, and we welcome any child of elementary/middle school age to join in the Advent Concert. Rehearsals have started on Tuesdays and Wednesdays at 3:30–4:15 p.m. in the Music Room of the parish building. You can join us just for the concert or for year-round music-making! Please contact Maria Shao at [email protected] if interested.

We are also raising money for the concert and for all the masses during the Christmas season. Help us to make our Christmas celebrations as joyful and beautiful as we can. Please make your donation to St. Bartholomew, with the memo, “Christmas Music.” Thank you for your generosity! GRIEF SUPPORT

The Grief Support Group meets every 3rd Tuesday of each month from 6-7 p.m. led by Gwyn Luong—our next meeting is on November 19th. We are also looking for parishioners to support Gwyn in this Ministry. If you are interested or for more information, please contact Gwyn at [email protected] or at (650) 347-0701. ST. BART’S FRIENDSHIP CLUB

The Friendship Club has been in existence at St. Bart’s ever since Fr. Ma’s time decades ago. Back then Friendship Club was created to welcome Chinese parishioners and to provide them with a sense of community. Today besides Chinese, anyone interested in Chinese and other diverse cultures, values, and traditions are welcome. It promotes friendship and understanding among members within St. Bart and the surrounding communities.

Friendship club existed to build community. The Club sponsors St. Bart’s Chinese New Year Dinner annually. In the last few years, Club members have gotten together at least once a year for a field trip. Places we have visited included the Holy Door at Mission San Rafael and Mission Sonoma. Besides visiting the Missions, members have enjoyed fellowship over lunch at Tiburon, Sonoma, and Palo Alto.
