The Ausema Family History

On September 29, 1855 Cornelis Ausema was born to the family of Jannes Ausema. He was one of three children in the family, having two sisters. One sister was Tante Trijntje, who married Oom Lambert Herlein and moved to Muskegon, Michigan. The Ausemas lived in the northern part of the province of Groningen, near the town of Uithuizen. On May 17, 1881 Cornelis married Jantje Siewert Kelder, who was born on April 7, 1859. To this marriage, which lasted 54 years, was born twelve children. The Ausemas were poor farm workers and had to work hard to keep the family fed. My father, who was the sixth child, was sickly. After completing the fourth grade in school he had to stay home and take care of his younger brothers and sisters while his parents and older brothers and sisters worked. One of his tasks was to watch sheep, which were brought across the dyk to feed in the polder during low tide but had to be brought back when the tide came in. When it was time to get the sheep he would leave the younger children in the care of a trusted family dog. One of his tasks in preparing the evening meal was to peel a pail of potatoes each day. As the children became older they would go to work for a farmer. They would stay on the farm, living in the barn which was attached to the house. The farmers in the area were rich and owned large farms, and therefore would hire several young people to stay on the farm to work for them. In 1907 the eldest daughter, Miena, left the Netherlands to come to America. Her future husband had sent for her and she was to meet him in Chicago. When she arrived she found Dirk had changed so much she didn’t recognize him and at first didn’t want anything to do with him. They did, however, marry and moved to Michigan where they raised a family of five. Siewert, the eldest son, also emigrated to America in 1909, followed by his brother Jannes in 1912. Both came to Grand Rapids. Siewert later married Annie and had a family of four. At this time leaving their homeland to come to America was a big decision because they would never return and would never see their parents again. It was also hard on those they left behind. After my father left my grandfather (Cornelis) took it so hard he would not speak for several weeks. Our ancestors were members on the State Church in the Netherlands – Hervormde Kerk (Reformed Church). Their home was a long way from the church and on Sunday Grandfather would walk to church with the older children. In 1972 when we were in the Netherlands we visited this church with Uncle Klaas. It was a very old building with graves under the aisles. The members had their own pew and there was a gate at the entrance to each pew. Uncle Klaas showed us where his pew was. All the woodwork in the church was very ornate. The pulpit is a small area on one wall with a sounding board over it. It reminded me very much of the flower Jack-in-the-pulpit.

When Grandfather was near the end of his life he wrote to his sister Trijntje Herline telling her of a dream he had had in which he talked to her. He died shortly thereafter and so did his sister. When Grandmother was old she was very crippled up with arthritis and could not use her hands or feet very well, and Grandfather had to care for her. Her fingers were doubled up with arthritis. Grandfather died on February 23, 1936, and Grandmother died three and a half months later on June 4, 1936. Ed Ausema, Grant, Michigan (circa 1988)

Letters Written by Cornelis Ausema to relatives in the United States translated from Dutch by Cornelius Witt of Holland, Michigan Letter #1: sent by C.J. Ausema from Uithuizen, June 25, 1935 to Jannes Ausema of Byron Center, Michigan. Dear children: I take my pen in hand to write you a few lines, and we hope that you will, with God’s blessing, receive them in good health. I had planned to write you a week ago, but in view of the fact that Gertrude does not understand Dutch, Gertrude (his daughter in law) wrote her a letter in English immediately. We are enjoying very nice weather now. Up to the longest day the weather was cold and we had much rain, but now it is suddenly more pleasant. The potatoes are behind schedule. Those planted early were frozen, and producing nothing. Koe and Cornelis planted some later and these look fine. The old potatoes are no longer any good. With this good weather those planted late are doing fine, but early ones produce very little. There are two Americans from Muskegon here, Jouwel Rop and Jan Bischop, staying with William Bischop. They also know Lammert and Trijntje. Mother is not well at all. She is losing strength and does not eat much. Her chest is always full of phlegm. I have that too, but her condition is worse because she must always sit still. Cornelis and Gertrude expect to go to Ooverden for a week from Sunday to visit her parents. By that time you will have this letter. That city lies in Drenthe. Iede and Griet also want to go along. Possible also Derk and Martje; and Siepke. But I don’t know as yet how they will regulate it all. They better know themselves. The sugarbeets are poor. By the longest day of the year they should be in leaf, but many seeds are not yet sprouted. But other plants and grains are doing all right. There are many weeds and only farmers that have plenty of help have “clean fields”. Ko goes through the village with his ice cream wagon and sells cones at 10, 5, and 3 cents. The content is cold as ice and the containers (cones) are eaten right with the ice cream. Peter Schol and Helene were here on Pentecost, with their Aaltje. They came on bicycles. And this Sunday they were going to go to Cornelis and Gertrude in Uithuizermeden. Weather permitting on June 30 they want to go to Coverden in Drenthe. As far as we know they are all well. There was a big fair here in Uithuizen lately – all for rich farmers. They manufacture all kinds of implements for farmers, so that they do not have to do so many things by hand. Greetings from us all to Sieuwert and Annie, Dirk and Miena, Trijntje and all the children when you visit each other.

Letter #2: written by Cornelis Ausema at Uithuizen, August 29, 1935 and addressed to Sieuwert Ausema, 1407 Burton St., Grand Rapids, MI. Dear Children I take pen in hand to write to you a few lines, and we hope you will receive them in health, with the blessing of God. We have received your letter and from it learned that you are in health, which is the greatest blessing we can enjoy on earth. Mother is far from well. As she grows older her strength decreases. She always has pain if she moves but slightly. It is painful for her to sit, but the pain is through her whole body. At night in bed it is the same. She can only lie on her right side, when (until?) she gets numb. Then she sits awhile again, in bed and then her legs become very painful. A person wants to get old, but then come the frailties. Mother can still see well. There are many old people who can’t see or hear. Martha is not well either. She gets high fevers (40 degrees Celsius) [104 oF] and then she goes to bed for a few days. When she is up and around she can do but little. She cannot do the washing. Griet always complains too, because of her back, but she goes out to work when there is something to be earned. John was at the doctor again on the 25th of August. He must be back in four months. It doesn’t cost him anything. Even travel expense is covered. Ko and Siepke Mooibrook are not well either – the first having lost a leg, and the second having back trouble. She walks about but is weak. Peter and Liena were here recently. They are well, as are Jan Haan and Trijntje, Cornelis and Gertrude, Klaas and Sierske, and Ties and Altje. We had a very long excursion with other old people – 100 of them – in four buses. We left at 9:00 A.M. from here, traveling through Uskwert, Overkantes, Middelsum and Ten Post to Heerenveen. There we got out of the bus and had coffee and a sandwich. Then we went to Emmen in Drenthe to a zoo. There were bears and wild cows (buffalo), big ones, and a couple of wild pigs with long heads and much hair on their backs. There were apes and other animals, such as deer and zebra and birds of all sorts. There was no lion. After we had seen it all we went to the hotel again. There we got lunch again. There was beer and lemonade, but if you wanted whiskey you had to pay for it. We even received cigars. It was a grand day. We returned by way of Zuidlaren where we left the bus again for refreshments. It was a long trip but we did not get bored. From Zuidlaren we went home passing through Winsum, Warsum, Uskwert. Arrived home at 8:00. There is much unemployment and when it will change. We’ve had a good summer. The farmers do much work by means of machines, hence they do not need people to bind sheaves. The potatoes look pretty good. That is a great thing. Greetings from all of us. Be sure to give our greetings to Jannes and Gertrude, Derk and Miena and Trijntje. Also to their children when you see them. Greetings from us all. Cornelis Jannes Ausema Jantje Sieuwert Kelder

Letter # 3: Written by C.J. Ausema in December 1935 and February 1936 and addressed to his sister Mrs. Ausema-Herlein, Holland Home, Michigan. Dear sister: I take my pen in hand to write you a few lines and we hope that under the blessing of God you may receive them in good health. We have received your letter and from it gather that Cornelis married a girl recently, and that you were sick with pneumonia – (or the child that is with you). Not much joy to the wedding when sickness enters. Well we have been sick too. I had some medicine and Jantje had some tablets. Of course, she always has to have medicine. But we both are much troubled with that phlegm. I can’t imagine where that all comes from. I heard your voice about Christmas time. I saw you about 12:00. And 2 days later it was the same thing again. Someone called “Ausema” and there was the same appearance. You wore black and I said, “That is Trijntje’s voice”. A quarter of an hour later there came another. He was not as big as Lammert and Cammert (?) wore black clothes and a black hat. But he said nothing, but I could clearly see it was Lammert, but the other person I did not know. [The above – most difficult to read – seems to be the essence of a dream.] Feb. 1936 he writes: I must take up my pen and resume my writing. I have been in bed. Have two kinds or medicine. Then my fingers began to swell and I could not write anymore. I have become weaker. I can hardly walk, and Jantje can’t walk at all any more. We don’t amount to much and it can be over with us at any time. We have become old and some day our time to leave must come, isn’t that so? One goes early and another later. It is 30 years ago that our father dies, on April 2, and now we have become old. Where has the time gone? Martje is down too. She gets some medicine the same as mother gets. She still gets around and visits us sometimes, but she must always be careful of the weather. The rest are all well, except Jan who has been in bed for three weeks, but he gets his wages paid. We have a mild winter until now. But with the full moon it will begin to freeze. We have had snow and rain. Now then, Trijntje, greetings to you and your children, from us all. C.J. Ausema – J.S. Kelder NOTE: Cornelis Ausema died soon after sending this letter, on February 26, at the age of 80. Jantje followed him on June 4, having reached the age of 77. Cornelis’ father, Jannes, must have died on April 2, 1906. At that time Cornelis would have been 50 years old. His father was born June 17 1821, and thus would have been 2 months short of his 85th birthday.

The genealogy of several families with the name Ausema or Ausma has been written up in four issues of a genealogical publication in the Netherlands. The title of these issues translates (loosely) as: “The Ausema and Ausma families of Groningen. The publications discuss two separate families, one called “Ausema” and one called “Ausma”. There is also discussion of an earlier family that took the name Ausma. The earliest family member, Dudo, was born in Uithuizen in 1476. The family seems to have lived in a region called “Ausmaheerd”, indicated on a map to be northeast of Gronignen. The later Ausema and Ausma families, which took their names in the early 1800’s, may have chosen their names because they lived in the same region. A family “crest” is re-printed with the publications. Although it has the family name spelled “Ausema”, it seems to have been associated with the earlier family. This family also has a connection to the name Alberda van Ekenstein. A separate crest for this family has a similar appearance to the Ausema crest. One of the family members, Rudolf, appears to have been an army captain. The family name “Ausema” was first taken among our ancestors by the children of a couple called Jannes Tjarks and Grietje Berends. The descendants of this couple have the name Ausema or a variant. Some of their ancestors are known, and their names are given. The ancestors of Jannes Tjarks are as follows; the numbering system includes the ancestors of his wife Grietje:

1 2 3 4 5 6 64. Tjark Jans b. 1580

Jannes Tjarks was born in a city called Warffum, and died in Uithuizen. He was married to Grietje Berends on December 3, 1754. He had 8 brothers and sisters, all but one younger; their names and birthdates are listed in the publication. The ancestors of Grietje Berends are listed here:

4 5 6 12. Peiter Meinders 6. Berent Pieters

b. 16 Nov 1697

13. Greetje Berents m. 12 March 1734 3. Grietje Berends 14. Cornellis Jacobs 7. Grietje Kornelis

b. Dec. 1711

15. Martjen Jacobs Grietje Berends was born December 19, 1734, and died January 4, 1798. Grietje Berends and Jannes Tjarks had twelve children. The first two were born in Warffum and the rest in Uithuizen. The children were as follows: I. Tjark b. 23 Nov. 1755; died young II. Kornelis b. 1756 III. Grietje b. 1757 IV. Tjark b. 22 July, 1759 V. Pieter b. 14 July, 1761; died young VI. Einje b. 10 July 1763 VII. Meiske b. 7 July 1765 VIII. Pieter b. 25 Feb 1770 IX. Klaas b. 17 May 1772 X. Jan b. 14 April 1775 XI. Jantjen b. 10 May 1778 Interestingly, one of the books lists what are apparently “second names” for the children, and each has the same name – Jannes. In 1811 Kornelis, Pieter, and Jan adopted the family name Ausema. They apparently chose the name for the region they lived in. The other two brothers, Klaas and Tjark, probably took another name. Their fates are not traced out in the books. The decendants of Jan changed the name Ausema into several variations, including Autsema, Aoutzema, Ousema, and Oudsema. As a result, only the descendents of Kornelis and Pieter retain the name Ausema. Some information about their sister Meiske is also given in the books. She married Ekke Jannes van der Graaf. They had three children, one girl and two boys. The girl married a van der Molen. Grandchildren with these two names (van der Molen and van der Graaf) are listed. The books also report a count of families with the name Ausema in the Netherlands as of 1947. Included in the list are the names Autsema and Ousema. A total of 102 families

Page 9: Cornelius and Jantje (Kelder) Ausemajausema.freeshell.org/ausema_family_tree.pdf · anything to do with him ... sent by C.J. Ausema from Uithuizen, June 25, 1935 to Jannes ... Ko

are listed in various cities in the province of Groningen, and an additional 28 families from other provinces. There are two listings for the town of Adorp; 14 for Uithuizen; and 28 for Uithuizermeeden. Only one is listed for Warffum. The other provinces with Ausemas included Friesland, Drenthe, Overijssel, Gelderland, Noord-Holland, and Zuid-Holland. A paragraph following this list mentions the existence of several Ausema families in the United States, mostly from the descendents of Kornelis, oldest son of Jannes Tjarks and Grietje Berends. The complete list is on pages 9-10 of issue 3 (October 1990). Other information is given about the children of Jannes and Grietje, on p. 15-16 of issue 3:

• Grietje Jannes, the first daughter, married Jakob Jans. • Tjark Jannes married Elizabeth Jans, whose first husband had died. • Anje Jannes (also known as Einje) married Tjaart Heertjes Hoeksema, and

they had 6 children. • Hemke Jannes married Hendrik Jans Huizenga. They had 5 children. • Pieter married Trijnte Cornelis Maring, and they had 3 children. • Meiske married a van der Graaf (see above)

Finally we come to Kornelis “Tjark” Ausema, the eldest son of Jannes and Grietje. Details about him are related on p. 10-11 of issue 2 (June 1990). Kornelis had two wives. He married the first, Anje Jans, on April 27, 1789. They had no children. After she died, he married Trijntje Doekes van der Hoek. They had four children. The first was born when Kornelis was 65 years old, and the last when he was 70! The children were all born in Uithuizen:

A. Jannes b. 17 June 1821 B. Jan b. 13 Sept 1822 C. Grietje b. 7 August 1824 D. Hilbrand b. 1 July 1826

The mother, Trijntje, died January 22, 1827, and Kornelis followed her shortly after on January 26, 1827. Apparently the children were raised by another family. No children are listed for Jan and Grietje*. Hilbrand married Carolin Klazens Hoppinga, and they had 7 children. Jannes had two wives; Jacomina Jans Smit bore him 8 children, and Weike Bijsterveld did not have children. Two of the daughters seem to have married the same man, but no other information is given. The other two children who married were Trientje, who married Lammert Herlein, and Cornelis, who married Jantje Kelder. Counting from the generations first listed above, John, Michael, Dan and Mark Ausema are in the 12th generation. James and Chris would represent the 13th generation. * I have recently been contacted by a descendent of Grietje, who alerted me that “Grietje married Kornelis Hindriks Maring (b. 17th march 1824) in Uithuizen on 15th Jan 1845. More information can be found at http://www.jamaring.com/.

I have also been contacted by another distant relative, Jan Autsema, a descendent of Jan Jannes Oudsema (10th child of Jannes Tjarks and Grietje Berends, above). He has posted significant researched information on the web at http://www.homepages.hetnet.nl/~queste/family.html. -Material compiled by John Ausema, Wilmington, DE
