Community Background

Corinthians NPO is situated on 11th street corner Forest road, Larochelle. The area is in South of

Johannesburg close to Rosettenville and is 15km away from Johannesburg CBD. Larochelle was

predominately a Portuguese area. Well renowned for Portuguese restaurants, soccer clubs and

events such as Lusito land.

The migration out of the area by Portuguese community has left the area with many vagrant buildings,

land and houses. These have become territorial grounds for street gangs and drug king pins who

have inhabited these spaces to influence criminal activity and develop young males into drug runners

and females into prostitutes. Names of respected restaurants and buildings are now coined by street

names such as Marikana, Area 51 and Afghanistan.

High Crime rate, unemployment, no social activities for the youth. Larochelle can only speak of its

past glory when Portuguese settlers still resided. The community which bears no hope , poverty and

inequality has developed its own mantra. “What good thing can come from Larochelle!?

About us?

Corinthians NPO is a football club dedicated to social change. As a NPO and a social enterprise our mission is to transform the lives of vulnerable young people in

Larochelle and surrounding areas , and in doing so promote long-term sustainable development in South Africa. Corinthians NPO uses its three structural pillars

being Sports Ministry, Social entrepreneurship and Community development to establish authentic and impactful relationships in our community.

We have a sports and recreation facility leased to us by the City of Johannesburg. We use the two soccer grounds for soccer activities. Furthermore, the clubhouse is

used for community and social entrepreneurship workshops and programs with the aim to develop economic sustainability and social community transformation.

Community Impact.

Soccer Ministry:

• Our organization keeps the boys and girls aged 8 – 21 years old active through soccer and various programs. We have a girls u13 team.

• Social programs such as the GBV program, Joburg market financial literacy program, Leadership and character training help develop physical, emotional and psychological wellbeing the youth in our organization.

• Our soccer ministry has collaborated with SAPS Moffatview gathering data of youth on parole with interest in Sport or entrepreneurship and helping them transition actively into the organization and society. So far we have seen 11 young people rehabilitated from juvenile into the community through Corinthians. There is a beauty in seeing them being coaches and players.

Community Development:

• The partnership with rise against hunger has helped us to share food parcels with 6 local ECD’s(Early childhood developments) each with an average of 30/40 children the parcels go long way in assisting the ECD with lunch for the children.

• We have seen an influx of foreign and abused woman running to our facility for shelter and assistance. Our team accommodates them for week/month with the purpose of finding them safe shelter for them and their children. Community development is also responsible for collaborating with government, community stakeholders, and assisting up and coming NPO/NGOS.

Social Entrepreneurship:

• The social entrepreneurship program is new initiative to address this economic dilemma in our community. When there are soccer games high number of cars park by the facility. We have established a bridge with Guys from Marikana and Afghanistan to start a car wash.

• Secondly we have 3 mothers who serve as vendors at our facility during games. The money they make helps feed their families. We have since built relationships with them and helping them to formally register as a trade and equip themselves with knowledge through workshops held around Joburg that can better their businesses.

• Lastly we have a food garden initiative run by a mother and young lady who was in prostitution. They plant, carrots, cabbages, beetroot and potatoes. We charge them rental of R10. The amazing part about this is seeing them sell to local spaza shop owners as suppliers. They have become independent and able to not only feed themselves but a community.

How you can partner with us!

We need your help in getting our coaches the right coaching accreditation. This would

not only better equip them, it would open professional avenues for them.

We need your help in purchasing garden equipment and machinery to plow more in our

garden creating opportunities for social entrepreneurs like Zoe Ndlovu and Christina

Mkhelele.

We need your help in better renovating our facility. The facility currently does not have

electricity, no ceiling board and needs a paint Job. Even more bedding, and furniture for

the abused and vagrant woman. Overhead projector for coaches to use and kids to

watch social movies and even more. The renovation of the facility will enable us to use

the clubhouse hall for events, meetings and conference gathering which we can

generate an income making us more sustainable.

We need your help to build an AstroTurf that can be versatile not only for 5 A side soccer,

but hockey and handball as we have those coaches and volunteers in a our database.

We have come so far with little assistance. Imagine how further we can go with you!
