This is how annoyed I felt when I heard the songs So Sick, Stick with you, and Unfaithful (originally by Ne-Yo and the Pussycat Dolls and Rihanna respectively) sung over by local artistes. I thought, did they get permission to do this? Highly unlikely. Secondly, why do we have to copy songs and add our Jamaican crust to them, don't we have our own talent? And last but not least, why does this happen in the first place. This simple act of singing a song without permission is actually copy-right infringement. Where are the authorities? For bootleg materials, the fine c urrently stands at J$100,000 per item (e.g. one song). Shouldn't this apply to local artistes who publish (without permission) recreated songs from the original artistes? Local radio and television stations should also be fined for even accepting these songs for broadcast. Why do we feel comfortable copying songs from foreign artistes and get irate if they should do that to us? How would you feel if Beyoncé and Jay-Z sang Bun Him (originally by Macka Diamond and Black-er) without their permission? Can you understand my frustration now? We would definitely say that they have no respect for us and our music. If foreign artistes have the decency to seek out the rightful owners of music before doing their own rendition, we as a proud nation should be able to adopt that same simple principle. Let us show the world that we have the sun, the sand, the sea and the original music. Let's make a change now. Don't copy what foreigners do - let's be trendsetters.
