The Sun is a star. It is the centre of the solar system. It is the closest star to the Earth. There are eight planets that move around the Sun. The planets in the order of
increasing distance from the Sun are Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune.
MERCURY is the smallest planet in the solar system. It is also the planet closest to the Sun. It is too hot to support any form of life.
EARTH is the third planet from the Sun. It is the only planet known to support life. The Earth has both land
and water. Our planet is also surrounded by air.
MARS is the fourth planet from the Sun and the second smallest planet in the solar system.
JUPITER is the fifth planet from the Sun. It is the largest planet in
the solar system.
SATURN is the sixth planet from the Sun. It
is called the ‘Ringed Planet’ because of the beautiful visible rings
surrounding it.
URANUS is the seventh planet from the Sun. It is
an ice giant.
NEPTUNE is the eighth planet from the Sun. It is very cold and windy.
Did you know?
Earlier, the solar family had another planet named Pluto. It was originally the smallest planet in the solar system. Now, Pluto is considered to be a ‘dwarf planet’.
