He also has 3 schools in Austin named after him. Diane Gongalez Bertrand Author of children’s books from San Antonio. In the Latino Hall of Fame. She encouraged Hispanics to read and developed positive role models for characters. She is a professor at St. Mary’s College Frank Dobie Folklorist and writer from Live Oak. He was awarded the medal of Freedom and the first Texan to gain national attention for his writing. Has schools in Austin named after him. Horton Foote Play writer and screenwriter, he won an Oscar for To Kill a Mockingbird and Tender Mercies. He encouraged other Texans to pursue drama. He won a Pulitzer Prize and the National Medal of the Arts. Scott Joplin African American known as the King of Ragtime, wrote many ragtime pieces and won a Pulitzer prize. He was the first African American to write a grand opera. Elisabet Ney A sculptor, artist, and pioneer of TX art. Originally from Germany and lived in Hempstead TX. She sculpted Stephen F. Austin and Sam Houston. Her art can be seen in Austin, WA D.C. and the Smithsonian. Amando Pena Jr From Laredo TX, he paints pictures of the Southwest and teaches (professor) art to Texans. Many of his paintings include Hispanic and Native American figures. Walter Prescott Webb Historian and author, created the Handbook of Texas. From Panola County. He is famous for his books and seminars, especially those devoted to the Great Plains and Great Frontier.
