July 27, 2010 was a momentous day for all of us connected to francis ford coppola winery. at exactly 4:00 p.m., excited visitors and jubilant staff members walked from our temporary tasting room through the doors of a whole new concept in wine, food and adventure: francis ford coppola’s stunning new facility is officially open for business!

Ah, harvest time in sonoma county. it’s the most exciting time of year around here for obvious reasons, and after a grape-growing season that kept winegrowers on their toes with late spring rains and foggy summer days, the arrival of the 2010 harvest is a very welcome sight indeed.

Harvest officially began at francis ford coppola winery on wednesday, september 8th with the arrival of pinot noir grapes from lodi. These grapes will be partnered with fruit from monterey county to make up our Diamond collection pinot noir. coming in later that first afternoon were our first white wine grapes, a lot from alexander Valley, which will be used in our Diamond collection sauvignon Blanc.

Due to the cooler summer, the coldest on record in the past 40 years in fact, grapes are about 10-12 days behind a ‘typical’ year. “But, this is not necessarily bad,” says corey Beck, Director of winemaking. “normally we spend all summer fighting the heat and keeping the vines hydrated but this year we used a lot less water in the vineyard and the vines look extremely healthy.” lise asimont, viticulturist and Director of Grower relations, explains that because of the lower temperatures “the vines were rarely stressed out and instead had ‘long work days’ where they were photo-synthetically active for longer periods of time than other summers.”

So what effect, if any, will this unusual weather have on the wines? “in 1999, we had a growing season that was similar to this year’s, and it turned out to be an incredible vintage,” said corey, drawing from his over 20 years of vineyard experience. lise, working her 13th harvest, is also optimistic. “The silver lining is the vines were able to work a bit harder, never encumbered by the heat, so have created very mature and intense flavors for us to enjoy. in fact, the flavors in the sauvignon Blanc and pinot noir grapes are already amazing.” Here’s to hoping the chardonnay, cabernet, alicante Bouschet and all the rest of our varietals follow suit as we work toward another wonderful vintage at francis ford coppola winery!

Vineyard Ride-Along Six days before harvest began, I joined Lise during one her visits to Sonoma County vineyards to help her collect brix samples. Brix sampling involves hand-picking a bagful of grapes from a specific vineyard, squishing them up, and testing them for sugar levels, ph balance and acidity, among other science-y things to help determine the exact day the vineyard is ready to be harvested. Based on what I learned on that early September morning, I developed four invaluable Harvest Survival Tips in case you ever find yourself in a vineyard… with a winemaker… during the waning days of summer (Hey, it could happen). DIAMOnD COLLeCTIOn MALBeC 2009 (New Vintages)although malbec is not all that well-known in the United states, it is common to blend small amounts of this varietal into cabernet sauvignon based wines; a tradition of the great Bordeaux wines for centuries. our malbec was grown in several california coastal vineyards, which have an abundance of afternoon sun, little wind and well-drained soils. malbec is less tannic than cabernet, but has a firmer structure than merlot, giving it fortitude, coupled with flavor accessibility. pairs well with roasted meats such as chicken and turkey, but also adaptable enough for the spicy fare found in many mexican, cajun, indian and italian recipes.

Total rookie mistake, here. For wine-

makers, tasting the grapes while in the

vineyard is an extremely important part

of what they do. They are checking for

tannins in the skin, color and ripeness of

the seeds, flavor in the pulp, all of which

help determine the maturity of the grape.

Meanwhile, I’m walking through the rows

of vineyards smacking on spearmint Or-

bit. Once I ditched the gum, it was fun

to taste the grapes and try to notice the

subtle differences… Of course, this leads

me to the next thing I learned...

VOTre SAnTé CHArDOnnAY 2008 (New Vintage)Our Votre Santé wines pay tribute to Francis Coppola’s grandmother, Maria Zasa, who would toast with the traditional French phrase ‘a votre santé’ (to your health) each time she raised her glass. So, it seemed fitting to craft this wine in the classic French style. Our 2008 Votre Santé Chardonnay displays an elegant balance of bright fruit, minerals and crisp acidity. With beautiful AROMAS of honeysuckle, guava and brioche and FLAVORS of spicy pears, citrus and minerals, this wine pairs well with Provolone or Gruyere cheese, crab cakes, smoked salmon or pork, and chicken or shrimp in cream sauce.

FrAnCIS FOrD COppOLA reSerVe SYrAH 2008 (New Vintage)Francis Ford Coppola Reserve Dry Creek Valley Syrah 2008 is co-fermented with a small percentage of Viognier to lift the aromatics and help “set” this varietal’s bright-magenta color. It has distinctive AROMAS of raspberries, pomegranate, cinnamon and smoke coupled with FLAVORS of black plums, strawberries and mocha. The finish shows hints of pepper and menthol. Enjoy this wine with barbecued short ribs, pork tenderloin with Dijon mustard or sage and sausage risotto.

FrAnCIS FOrD COppOLA reSerVe VIOGnIer 2009 (New Vintage)Our Lily’s Vineyard Viognier strikes a lovely balance between rich, ripe fruit and crisp natural acidity, which is often hard to achieve in warmer climates. The grapes are harvested in the early morning hours to ensure that the fruit retains its essential acidity. The fruit is then crushed and fermented at a cool temperature to protect the delicacy of this varietal. Finishing occurs in stainless steel so that the resulting wine maintains a soft, silky texture. Mrs. Scorsese’s Lemon Chicken

“Marty Scorsese’s parents always reminded me so much of my own that I loved to have dinner with them. Catherine was the greatest cook and one dish of hers was my favorite.

Marty can make it as well and when he describes how it’s done he always says ‘ You drown the chicken in lemon juice.’ Then add garlic, olive oil and plenty of fresh oregano

and roast until the chicken is revealed, golden brown.” Francis Coppola

Coat bottom of 16 oz Le Creuset baking dish with the olive oil. Add sliced garlic. Place chicken skin side down in dish and season with salt and pep-per. Drown chicken in lemon juice, then top with two sprigs fresh oregano. Place in 350 degree oven and cook for 20 minutes. Remove, then flip chicken to expose skin. Return to oven and cook again for 25 – 30 minutes until lemon juice is reduced by half and skin is a golden brown. Serve with rice pilaf and garnish with new sprigs of fresh oregano.

Ingredients2 lbs chicken leg and chicken thighs, halved

2 cups fresh lemon juice3 Tbs olive oil

1 Tbs sliced garlic4 large sprigs fresh oregano

Salt and pepper to taste
