Obe- sity is a major risk factor in the development of these two conditions. Having a BMI over 30 is considered clini- cal obesity. However, we can take steps to prevent or even reverse high blood pres- sure and type 2 diabetes by controlling and maintaining a healthy weight and by being physically active and eating a healthy diet. Physical ac- tivity is key to success. You can lower your blood pres- sure just by reducing your body weight by 10 pounds. Aim for at least 30 minutes a day of activity and focus on adding protein, fruits, low fat dairy and vegetables to your diet. Losing weight slowly is important. A good begin- ning goal is to aim for losing about ½ to 1 pound per week. It is more realistic to achieve and studies show that slower more consistent weight loss leads to long term success.
