2.1: Coordinate systems

• In a 3D space, a coordinate system can be specified by the intersection of 3

surfaces. An orthogonal coordinate system is defined when these three surfaces

are mutually orthogonal at a point .

• Most commonly used coordinate systems

(a)– Cartesian; (b) – Cylindrical; (c) – Spherical.

Why we need a new coordinate systems ? It is more easy to analysis some problems that has a cylindrical or spherical

symmetry with spherical and cylindrical coordinate .
