What is “conversion”?

• Linguistics• Grammar• Morphology• Theory of Word FormationWith all chances to become such kind of

a metaphor as “paradigm”!

Conversion/Zero derivation

• The creation of a word from an existing word without any change in form.

• Often a word of one lexical category (part of speech) is converted from a word of another lexical category.

• The boundary between conversion and functional shift (the extension of an existing word to take on a new syntactic function) is not well-defined.

Example for linguistic conversion

WORK• Verb (he works)• Noun (a work)• The explicit link between the base and

the derivation (the new word) never disappears!

Another definition

A kind of word formation by changing the grammar paradigm of an existing word without any formal change in the word.

What is palimpsest?

A palimpsest is a manuscript page from a scroll or book that has been scraped off and used again. The word "palimpsest" comes through Latin from Greek and meant "scraped (clean and used) again."

The palimpsest as a metaphor

The metaphor of palimpsest says that we never entirely delete the past in all its representations: narratives, traditions, manuscripts, books, inscriptions, images, architecture, music, etc.

Main statement

We palimpsesting the culture by the conversion proceeding, i. e. by changing the paradigm and the context of something that already exists.

Which paradigm is changed?

1. Different intentionalities create different senses.

2. The background never changes – only the surface level changes, according to different intentionalities and generating different contexts.

3. MANUSCRIPTS NEVER BURN!
