CONVENTIONS OF MUSIC VIDEOS

Editing to the music- In Aminé the on the beat the camera cuts to black and a sound effect is met by the extreme close up and then the video continues. This was extremely effective as it was quite dynamic.

• Performance scene- for many upbeat songs they have the artist lip syncing either in front of a crowd or in a studio. For example, in Marc Anthony’s Vivir Mi Vida.

• Multiple camera shots- within music videos they tend to use a range of camera shots to show different angles of situations and help to move along a storyline.

• Have a storyline/ narrative- many would argue the point of the music video is to aid the understanding of a song so for that reason many music videos use characters to tell a story sometimes vocalised by the song.

• Flash cut editing quickly progresses a complicated storyline Ne yo’s music video for miss independent greatly conforms to these conventions. You can see the time stamps that the different shots are all close together. These shots helped us to establish a location and identify the lead characters.
