Continuing Professional Development is committed to providing high quality educational programs to Manitoba physicians. The main program objectives are to enhance clinical competence and improve patient care. This series of courses will feature a combination of plenary sessions and workshops that will allow the participant an opportunity for interaction in a convenient, centrally located venue.

Through partnerships with the Neil John Maclean Health Sciences Library and the Clinical Learning and Simulation Program, U of M CPD programs will provide multiple opportunities for hands-on learning.

In order to allow for more opportunities for Mainpro-C small group workshops we have changed the format of our Bannatyne Campus Friday Sessions. The session will now start at 0830 and end at 1300. Participants can choose to attend an additional Mainpro-C event starting at 1330.

The Bannatyne Campus series offers approximately 48 hours of lectures and workshops throughout the academic year commencing in late September and ending in June.

Operating in eleven Manitoba communities, this program offers physicians outside Winnipeg onsite or videoconference CPD sessions. In addition, all sites receive the Bannatyne Campus program by videoconference through MBTelehealth. Please note that you must register online using the appropriate event code.

In order to address the unique clinical characteristics of each community, this program has community physicians who act as “chairs”. These physicians identify the learning needs of their colleagues and work with the CPD office staff to organize CPD events.

The Community-Based Program is supported by an unrestricted education grant from the Office of Rural and Northern Health.

UPCOMING FACULTY OF MEDICINE EVENTS:

WRITER, MD: A CREATIVE WRITING WORKSHOP FOR PHYSICIANS

This course will launch in the fall of 2012 in conjunction with the Centre for Creative Writing and Oral Culture and the Department of English at the University of Manitoba. It will be limited to twelve physicians. Writer Dave Williamson will lead the group in a structured, task-oriented setting. If you’ve always wanted to tackle your memoir, a short work of fiction, or just an article for JAMA’s “A Piece of My Mind”, this course will help you cultivate both your skills as a writer, your self-reflection as a physician, and your appreciation of the power of narrative.

For further information, contact Dr. Jillian Horton at [email protected].

SELF-DIRECTED CLINICAL TRAINEESHIPS

Self-directed clinical traineeships are prolonged learning experiences, usually planned to enhance current knowledge or to learn new knowledge and skills. They are personally designed, flexible and effective training for practicing clinicians.

Typically, they last from 2-4 weeks and must be less than 6 months duration. The traineeship usually occurs in a full time block but part-time may be possible in certain disciplines. For further information, contact Cindy Lewkiw at [email protected] or (204) 977-5628.

Associate Dean’s MessageThe University of Manitoba’s Division of Continuing Professional Development (CPD) is continually looking for ways to improve our services to family physicians and other health professionals. With over 2000 registrations in over 125 sessions, U of M CPD provides a variety of offerings and options.

The Division of CPD strives to promote and provide relevant, needs-based assessment and educational activities to physicians and other health professionals that will enable optimal provision of patient care. Just as clinical practice is continuously evolving, we recognize that learning is a continuous pursuit. To that end, we have developed a calendar of events for family physicians that is accessible throughout our province, onsite or through videoconferencing.

By popular demand, we are also increasing opportunities for hands-on learning with Mainpro-C accredited small group workshops, through simulation and self-directed clinical traineeships.

We look forward to having you join us for one or many events this year.
