YEAR 11 REVISION TIP - NUMBER ONE: Short spurts of revision (20-25 minutes) are most effective. Your concentration
lapses after about an hour and you need to take a short break (5-10 minutes). Aim to revise for 2-3 hours per evening and 5-6 hours each day at the weekend.

CATERING WB 22/05/17
Please see below the list of practical lessons planned in Catering/Food Preparation and Nutrition - week beginning Monday 22nd May:
Mrs Bolland, Head of Food Studies.
ADVANCE NOTICE – YEAR 7 Learning Programme – Assessment Week 3 From Monday 2nd June to Friday 16th June 2017 (inclusive) all students in
Year 7 will be undertaking assessments in the subjects they are currently studying.
It should be noted that all assessments are cumulative and therefore based
potentially on anything that your son/daughter has studied during this academic year.
The Year 7 assessment will be based on a substantive piece of work in their subject from which a teacher is able to give a fine GCSE grade (1 to 9). Year 7 students will complete their examinations in their classrooms under exam
conditions.
Please see below the exam timetable so your son/daughter is aware of when their examinations take place. Please could you encourage and support your
son/daughter to prepare thoroughly for these exams as they will give them a good indication of the progress they have made to date.
I have included some guidance around revision and preparing effectively for exams. For example, in the lead up to the examinations your son/daughter should be completing approximately 2 hours of independent revision per day.
Your son/daughter should be very clear about what is being examined from their class teacher.
I have asked all teaching staff to set revision homework via Show My Homework for the next few weeks until the examinations have been sat which your son/daughter should record in their planner.
I trust that you find this information useful and that we are able to best work together to ensure that your son/daughter continues to make progress in all the subjects they are studying.
Mr Cunningham, Deputy Head Teacher, Director of Studies.

ADVANCE NOTICE - YEAR 9 Learning Programme – Assessment Week 3 From Monday 12th to Friday 16th June 2017 (inclusive) all students in Year 9 will be undertaking assessments in the subjects they are currently studying. For GCSE subjects these assessments will be based on past paper questions and will be taken under exam conditions to best prepare your son/daughter for final examinations in May/June 2019.
In the case of English Literature, we have made the decision that this year group will be sitting their actual GCSE at the end of year 10 in order to manage their year 11 exam load. With this in mind, all English Literature exams from this point in time will be sat in the sports hall and replicate real GCSE exams. Experience tells us that this helps alleviate some of the nerves over time. Information will be given to students via an assembly.
Please find attached the exam timetable so your son/daughter is aware of when their examinations take place. All examinations will take place in the classroom under exam conditions except the English Literature paper which has been scheduled for the whole year group in the Sport Hall.
Please could you encourage and support your son/daughter to prepare thoroughly for these exams as they will give them a good indication of the progress they have made to date and what they need to do to improve in order that they can secure fantastic exam results in the summer of 2019.
I have included some guidance around revision and preparing effectively for exams. For example, in the lead up to the examinations your son/daughter should be completing approximately 2 – 3 hours of independent revision per day. Your son/daughter should be very clear about what is being examined from their class teacher.

RUGBY LEAGUE SQUADS Widnes Vikings Community Coach, Andy Sheridan, visited Rainhill during the month of May to deliver some high quality coaching sessions with the Years 7-
9 Rugby League squads.
The sessions were very well attended. The boys were coached in the defensive and attacking areas of the game and many showed remarkable improvement
over the course of the month.
Upon his departure, Andy said; 'I was very impressed with the attitude of all
the rugby boys and their keenness to get better at the sport they enjoy, it was a pleasure to visit the school, the boys are a credit to Rainhill High
School and I hope they can take what they have learnt into their
next games and go on to be successful teams.'
Andy was particularly impressed
with Ben Daniels of Year 7, Ethan Brown and Callum Barrow of Year 9.
I hope all of the boys enjoyed the sessions, and I look forward to
watching them improve further in the future.
Mr Patterson, Maths Teacher.
ARTS ACADEMY NEWS
On 10th May, our Year 12 and 13 Drama & Theatre Studies students visited
the Royal Exchange Theatre in Manchester to attend a performance on 'Twelfth Night'. All students (along with Mrs Speers and myself) thoroughly enjoyed the
interesting, contemporary interpretation of a classic play, and it is testament to the power of theatre that it is something which we are still talking about in lessons now!
This will be our last trip with Year 13, and we wish them every success in their upcoming exam...and for Year 12, we look forward to what comes next!
Mrs Renison, Head of Drama.
HAYFEVER SEASON Hayfever season is once again upon us. If your child suffers from hayfever,
please ensure that they take any medication before coming into school and/or carry any necessary medication with them.

ATHLETICS SEASON STARTS WITH A BANG After last season’s strong results in athletics season; this year we have been really looking forward to getting going and the early signs are that we won’t be
disappointed.
Since returning after Easter, we have had good numbers at training on Thursdays, which has led to a strong start to the season.
The season curtain raiser was the Year 7 & 8 Quadkids competition at Sutton Sports Centre. A competition which sees four athletes compete in the 100m,
800m, Long Jump and Howler throw. All athletes performed brilliantly on the day and saw the Year 7 & 8 girls team finish with a bronze and the Year 7 & 8 boys finished with a silver. This means both boys teams have qualified for the
Merseyside Finals later in the year.
After the younger athletes had their opportunity to get the season going, the senior athletes joined them at the English Schools qualifier at Bebington Oval. A really tough draw saw us in the same group as some nationally renowned
athletics schools but again, great performances on the day saw us place really competitively. Both boys teams (Junior –Years 7&8 and Inter – Year 9&10) finished third and both girls teams finished fifth, which is an improvement on
last year’s results.
There were numerous great performances on the day but extra congratulations needs to be made to the following nine athletes who all broke school records on the day:
Eleanor Gaskell – Long Jump
Joe Byrne – 1500m
Owen Davies – Shot Putt
Jessica Murphy – 1500m
Charlie Roberts – 800m
Josh Donnelly – Triple Jump
Lewis Irlam – Shot Putt
Luka Sidebotham – 200m
Luke Gill – Javelin
A special mention also needs to be made to Luka Sidebotham who the weekend before, and whilst
competing for his club, won the 100m and 200m at the Merseyside County Championships. This means that Luka has now qualified for the
Northern Finals on August 4th. Good luck to him and Charlie Roberts who will also be competing at
the finals.
Mr Rachi, Second in PE.

STUDENT SERVICES Dear Parent/Carers,
Since the Cashless Catering system has been put in place, we have had an
increase in the amount of pupils asking for loose change at Student Services. Unfortunately, Student Services does not always have coins available for pupils to
exchange for notes. If your child needs money for their dinner and bus/train fare, please provide them with the correct change. Please be advised that the Cashless
Catering top-up machines we have in school does not accept anything less than 10p.
Your co-operation is appreciated.

MENTAL HEALTH AWARENESS WEEK Following on from Mental Health Awareness Week last week, some of our students attended workshops to look at how they could manage stress and anxieties related to school, friendships, family and such like.
They were given the following worksheet as guidance; which we all felt was a really helpful key to working through problems independently. Hence, we are sharing it with all students and parents alike, especially in light of up and coming LP assessments for Year 7.
