Chairman’s Report

As we close the books on our 2014 Balmain Junior Rugby League season, we do so knowing that our efforts were not in vain. With 139 teams competing from u/6s to A-Grade each weekend I can acknowledge another successful outcome.

Although we have seen several changes in the structure of our senior clubs throughout the year we have not been distracted from our goal which is to grow and strengthen the Balmain JRL.

Jennie Webster was on the front foot organising our Balmain JRL registration day at Concord, constructing the Season draw, arranging our Sportsman's Lunch fund-raiser, Grand-Final day, the Balmain Tigers & JRL presentation night as well as securing important sponsors.

On that note, it is important to acknowledge the support we receive from our major sponsors - COATESHIRE and RYDE EASTWOOD LEAGUES CLUB and their financial generosity.

Grand-Final time on LEICHHARDT Oval (both Friday night & Saturday) was magic as we witnessed some outstanding football from all teams. The enthusiastic supporters were just as loud and excited be it the U/9s or U/16s!

The word PROUD comes to mind as throughout the season we witnessed quite a number of our past juniors playing in the Wests Tigers side as well as RYAN PAPENHUYZEN who was voted "THE OUTSTANDING HARROLD MATTHEWS PLAYER OF THE YEAR". RYAN is a talented young footballer and he received his award on the evening of the BRAD FITTLER MEDAL presentation.

It goes without saying that our Junior League would not be as strong as it is were it not for Patron Mick Manning, BDJRL Board Directors, Club members, supporters and officials. All of these people give up many hours of their time week after week.

Furthermore, our partnership with the Balmain Referees Association has remained as solid as it was in previous years, their participation throughout the season is extremely valuable and without them there would not be a game.

Thanks again to Jennie Webster and our Board of Directors for another successful season, hopefully we will all be back to do it again in 2015.

RYDE EASTWOOD Football and Leagues Clubs have been loyal sponsors of the Balmain Junior League for over 50 years.

The Hawks, who celebrated their Jubilee in 2013, are a club steeped in tradition and were regarded as the 'undisputed kings of semi-professional football.'

The original 1963 Ryde Eastwood Hawks competed in the inaugural Inter District first grade competition and in 1964 were part of the re-named NSWRL Second Division.

In 2005 the club began a partnership with the Balmain Tigers in the NSW Premier League and NSW Cup up until the 2014 season.

For five decades they have supported local junior clubs participating in the Balmain Junior League.

In 2014 The Leagues Club became a Major Sponsor of the entire Balmain Junior League by sponsoring the District for the cost of the Gow Gates Insurance Program.

The generosity of the Football Club and Leagues Club towards the children and families in the District has been nothing short of outstanding and we look forward to a long and rewarding relationship into the future.

NRL Game Development Report

Balmain Primary Schools Report2014 has been a very successful year for the Balmain Primary School area. Back in February we took the Wests Tigers First Grade players to 25 schools in the area to talk about the NRL's initiative of “Tackle Bullying”. The message was well received in schools resulting in an increased number of schools participating in NRL programs throughout 2014.

We introduced some new initiatives in 2014 the first of which was a “Development Day” for Stage 2 and 3 students where schools completed the NRL Backyard program over the course of a day which created a great atmosphere for students and teachers alike.

A Development Day was also introduced for Early Stage 1/ Stage 1 (K – 2) Similar to the Stage 2 and 3 Day the NRL Backyard League Infants program was run over the course of a day.

Both initiatives were very well received by students and teachers as well as NRL staff and will become a big focus in 2015.

During term 3 and 4, we ran our Stage 2 and 3 (Year 3 – 6) Backyard League programs with a big increase in schools participating in previous years which was also the case for our Early Stage 1/ Stage 1 program.

We held 3 Balmain League Tag Gala Days during Term 4 at Meadowbank Park, Timbrell Park and Wentworth Park with 95 teams participating in the 3 events. These days were non - competitive with each team playing at least 5 games on the day.

All students participating in any of our programs (including the Development Days) received a Wests Tigers bag comprising of a Rugby League Ball, NRL Sticker, and letter to the parents explaining the Program we've run.

Included in the letter are details for their nearest junior league club. They also receive a junior league poster with all of the BDJRL contacts, a set of NRL playing cards, squishy ball, magnet and NRL bag tag.

Hopefully we will start to see an increase in junior league numbers for 2015 with the work we have done in the Balmain area throughout 2014.

Adam HellyerGame Development Officer – [email protected]

As always, recognition must go to the many people who make it possible for the teams to take the field every week. Thank you to the Balmain Tigers Football Club, the Junior League Board, our major sponsors Tigers Five Dock and Sydney Markets, Ryde Eastwood Football and Leagues Club, Australian Power & Gas, DTS, Blades, Griffin Air Conditioning for the outstanding support provided during the 2014 Representative season.

NRL Game Development Report

Balmain Secondary Report2014 was a huge year for Rugby League in Balmain High Schools which saw 16 schools participating in the Community Carnival, a gala day or Backyard League program.

2014 Community Carnival

The theme of this year's NRL Community Carnival was Tackle Bullying. NRL Game Development took this important health message to seven high schools and over 750 students during the February school blitz. Each Development Officer was accompanied by several Wests Tigers players at each assembly visit. The players helped the students develop strategies to identify, deal with and report bullying. They also spoke of their junior rugby league experiences and promoted the local BDJRL clubs.

2014 Balmain All Schools

This year's Balmain All Schools Gala Day was a wonderful event played to a very high standard. High School teams gathered from across the region at St Luke's Park, Concord for a huge day of competitive rugby league. The winners of each division from this year's carnival are:

Under 13s – Holy Cross College

Under 14s – Holy Cross College

Under 15s – Strathfield South HS

These schools went on to represent the region at the NSW All Schools. The under 14s Holy Cross team played to their potential and progressed to the final but gallantly went down to a strong St Dominic's College.

2014 High School Clinics and Activities

After taking over from Vinh Tran in the role of Secondary School NRL Game Development Officer in May, there has been nonstop Rugby League activity in the Balmain region. Schools from across the area have continued their enthusiastic involvement through the NRL's Backyard League program. The three or five week program was enjoyed by nine high schools within the region resulting in thousands of Backyard League footballs being distributed to each participant. Accompanying the footballs was a Wests Tigers Pack for each participant which included a Wests Tigers poster, NRL sticker, pencil case, fridge magnet, squishy footy and information promoting the local BDJRL club. Schools who participated in a Backyard League program this year were: Arden Anglican School, Domremy College, Marsden HS, Riverside Girls HS, Santa Sabina College, Strathfield Girls HS, St Patricks Marist College – Dundas, Sydney Secondary College Balmain.

In closing, I must thank a number of people for their efforts throughout the year who have contributed to the success of the game in Balmain this year. Adam Hellyer has done a wonderful job in his first year in the primary school position giving thousands of younger students across the region the chance to enjoy rugby league. Also Mark Madden, Joseph Nakhoul and Brandon Frison for being our trusted NRL casual staff members, without them Adam and I would not have been able to engage anywhere near as many students in our great game. Lastly, and most importantly, to Jennie Webster for her tireless work keeping the Balmain Junior Rugby League strong and thriving.

Jan Carroll Memorial TrophyU/17 Player Of YearSTRONG running Concord-Burwood United forward Frank Tanginoa is the winner of the Jan Carroll Memorial Trophy for the district's Under 17 Player of the Year.

The powerful back rower is pictured receiving his trophy from Balmain Football Club director James Myatt at the Tigers' Awards Night at Ryde Eastwood Leagues Club.

Frank was a tower of strength for the Wolves in the NSW Combined Inner City U/17s competition with his bullocking runs and jarring defence a feature.

It was a season to savour for the strapping youngster, who played his early football with the Guildford club in the Parramatta Junior League.

A younger brother of current North Queensland and ex-Parramatta NRL forward Kelepi Tanginoa, fearless Frank has battled a knee injury which has hampered his progress with the 2015 Balmain S.G Ball U/18 team.

Tanginoa trained solidly with the Tigers' summer squad and produced a powerhouse effort in an U/17s representative trial against Newcastle before aggravating the injury.

A fully fit Frank shapes as a big weapon for Mathew Head's S.G Ball outfit in the club's U/18 Junior Cup finals charge.

John Stapleton TrophyA Grade Player Of The YearFROM the West Yorkshire district of Stanningley to the inner west Sydney suburb of Five Dock – that is the route to success for Balmain Junior League's A Grade Player of the Year Ben Smith.

The talented English utility back was a deserved recipient of the John Stapleton Trophy and is pictured receiving the award from the former Balmain Football Club president at the Tigers Awards Night at Ryde Eastwood Leagues Club.

Smith was a stand out for the Five Dock RSL Junior Rugby League Club in 2014 with consistent performances at five eighth and centre.

He led the Dockers to the finals of the NSW Combined Inner City A Reserve Grade competition where they were eliminated by St George club Arncliffe Scots and skippered the Balmain Open Age representative team for the Arthur Beetson Cup challenge against Eastern Suburbs.

Ben starred at five eighth in a 12-all draw with the Roosters at Leichhardt Oval and impressed with his flair and creativity out wide.

The team was coached by former Balmain, Gold Coast, South Sydney and St George half back Wes Patten and Dockers' mentor Rob Mason and featured several of his Five Dock team mates.

It has been a smooth transition to Australian style rugby league for the 28 year old import, who has made an impact these past two seasons since arriving from the Old Dart.

Ben has collected the Coach's Award, Best Back and Players' Player trophies for his power running and skilful displays and finished as Five Dock's leading try scorer in 2014.

His appointment as captain of the Combined Balmain representative squad was a just reward for determined efforts in the A Reserve Grade competition.

The athletic Smith has come a long way from his junior days as a second rower with Stanningley JRLFC.

Blessed with power, speed and vision he was converted into a centre/five eighth and hasn't looked back.

When Ben sought a move to Sydney, he was recommended to the Five Dock RSL club by former Dockers player Daniel Patrick.

Now he is saddling up for a third season, much to the delight of Five Dock officials and players.

Other Balmain A Grade Player of the Year recipients include Graham Pearce (Ryde Eastwood), Gary Braams (Sawdust), Grant Thomas (Balmain United), Peter Bingham (West Ryde-Denistone), Jason Banfield (Concord United), Frank Dunne, Craig Barnett, Robert Gerrie (Leichhardt Wanderers), Aaron Brown and Nathan Donato (Balmain United), Cameron Liddle and James Harradence (West Ryde-Denistone), Jason Tutt (Sawdust Storm), Joel Lacey (West Ryde-Denistone), Paul Wallace and Justin Williams (North Ryde), Damien Braumann (Leichhardt Juniors), John Kaho (Leichhardt Wanderers), Kelvin Weir (North Ryde), Michael Basan (Dundas Shamrocks), Steve Pont (Concord Burwood/North Ryde), Abdul Mohamad (Burwood/North Ryde) and Michael Zappia (Leichhardt Wanderers).

Under 10 Div 2 Grand FinalLEICHHARDT Wanderers Black toppled North Ryde 18-12 to clinch the Austin Hoyle U/10 Div 2 Trophy.

The Wanderers led 18-0 at the interval before the Hawks staged a spirited revival - led by powerful forward and Player of the Match Michael Lorenti.

It was the Wanderers' dominant first half performance that laid the foundations for premiership honours with forward Harry Appleby (8th minute), hooker Jack Windsor (13th minute) and gun centre Darcy Manners (19th minute) crossing for converted tries.

North Ryde showed plenty of courage and zoomed back into calculations with second half tries by promising back Cameron Bragg (21st minute) and Kaden Bezak (35th minute).

The tough-tackling Lorenti produced a non-stop effort and was supported by Cameron Bragg, Nathan Saba, Tom Ryan, Ramone Chahine, Max Braham, Savineta Moala, Max Stallard and Tyson Yeboah.

Hard working Wanderers' forwards Appleby, Windsor, Lucas Toskas, Dean Winslow, centre Darcy Manners, fullback Ashton McGuinness and halves Joseph Schmitzer and Zac Syron produced strong games for the premiers.

Under 12 Div 2 Grand FinalBALMAIN PCYC savoured one of their proudest premiership triumphs when they upset North Ryde 26-4 in the U/12 Div 2 decider.

Clever half back Connor Simos and power forward Dean Efthimiou proved instrumental as the young Coppers defied the odds to lift the Charles 'Chook' Fraser Trophy.

Simos - a stand out in the number seven jumper - was full of running and created opportunities with his crisp passing to earn the Player of the Match award.

Efthimiou was a tower of strength along with forwards Harry Janson, Ezekiel Herbert, Matt Tuhetoka and centre Alessio Bortolin as PCYC turned in a dominant second half showing against the highly rated Hawks.

After a dour struggle, the Coppers led 6-0 at the break with Efthimiou bursting over to score on the stroke of half time and Harrison Longbottom potting the extras.

But the turning point came soon after the interval when PCYC raced in three tries in the space of five minutes to jump to a 22-0 lead.

Efthimiou, Simos and Janson did the damage before North Ryde centre Christian Grego collected a consolation try after 34 minutes.

Fullback James Bragg, centre Nathan Moujalli and forwards Luke Bryant, Riley Price and Jordan Poole were the pick of a brave North Ryde side.

Tragic Deaths Rock Tigers Community By CHRIS KARAS

BALMAIN Junior League mourned the deaths of three former players in tragic circumstances during 2014.

North Ryde Hawks' representative forward Bradley Dillon, all round sportsman Chris Noble and Tigers' two time premiership-winning hooker Richard Dorahy have all passed away in separate tragedies.

25 year old BRADLEY DILLON - the young father of two who was shot and killed outside Leichhardt Market Place - was a talented footballer who achieved success with the Hawks and Balmain junior rep squads.

As a teenager, Brad served the Hawks with distinction and led the club to Grand Final glory as skipper of the premiership-winning U/18s in 2006, picking up the Player of the Match award.

He was also a promising junior baseballer who turned down an opportunity to trial with an American baseball team so that he could instead play in a Grand Final for the Hawks.

Dillon - who played alongside the likes of Troy Pearce and former Balmain and Parramatta utility Matt Ryan - joined the Hawks in 2001.

A tough competitor with a huge work rate, Brad went on to represent the Balmain U/14 and U/15 Development squads before earning selection in the Tigers' Harold Matthews Cup U/16s squad in 2004 that was coached by Stuart Stanton.

Dillon won the club's U/13 Best Forward award and was named U/14 Player of the Finals series and skippered North Ryde to an U/18s premiership in 2006 where he collected the Player of the Match award.

His final season with the club was in 2008 when he figured in the U/21s competition.

27 year old CHRIS NOBLE - who played rugby league for North Ryde and represented Balmain in the Jersey Flegg Cup competition - was a victim of the Rozelle explosion.

A versatile sportsman, Noble also starred for the Drummoyne Dirty Reds Rugby Club as a centre and was a fierce linebacker for the Sydney University American Football Club.

Chris helped the Lions' remain undefeated champions from 2010-2013 and guided the team to a National Club Championship title win over Gold Coast last October.

RICHARD DORAHY - one of the finest hookers produced by Holy Cross Ryde - suffered a fatal heart attack while surfing at Curl Curl Beach.

He was 48. Dorahy is one of a select band of juniors to win NSWRL S.G Ball and Jersey Flegg Cup championships with Balmain and proved a real dynamo from dummy half with his creativity around the ruck.

The skilful Dorahy was part of Balmain's 1982 S.G Ball team that won an historic first title after toppling Newtown 25-16 in the U/16 Grand Final at Sydney Sports Ground.

Two years later he helped the Tigers' clinch the 1984 Jersey Flegg Cup trophy with a 10-0 victory over Penrith at Leichhardt Oval.

He lived in New Zealand for several years with his young family but had returned to the northern beaches where he maintained his fitness as a keen surfer.

One of 12 children, Richard's late dad Terry Dorahy was a former president of the Gladesville Bowling & Sports Club.

Jimmy FitzgibbonBALMAIN Junior League lost one of its greatest stalwarts with the death in 2014 of Jimmy Fitzgibbon - a pioneer of the famous Codocks JRLFC.

Jimmy, a life member of the BJL, was the club's long serving secretary and created some type of record when he represented Balmain in the Presidents Cup competition for four successive years.

He was aged 91.

A tough forward, Jimmy once sat on the bench as cover for Test hooker George Watt during a Balmain premiership victory in the 1940s.

He also had a fine record of coaching winning teams, having achieved great success with the Codocks E Grade sides for over a decade.

A man of fine character, Jimmy was a highly respected official that was dedicated to the BJL.

Former Codocks products Geoff Starling and Bobby Grant - who went on to play Test football for Australia - were among the mourners at his funeral service at St Augustine's Church, Balmain.
