Outline of the separate workhop

Three habitable structures connected by the covered walkway which form the residence.

North facing POS serves as a setback between two houses.

Parking/Circulation/Services and a Bushfire shelter are located in the sheltered center of the site.

Locating the buildings centrally on site means views down the hill capture the surrounding forest and gives each room a sense of privacy.

The proposed crossover has been moved the southern edge of the site, to enable a private north facing garden area, with the service and parking space located to the south of the main dwelling.

1.6 Architectural Statement

Design Statement

Positioned at the edge of the forest and surrounded by gum trees, 10 Connells Gully Rd provides a tranquil bush setting, and a perfect location for a retreat style family residence. Sitting on top of a subtle ridge which falls down to sailors creek on the east and towards a neighbouring block to the west, 10 Connells Gully Rd enjoys many unobstructed views down to the forest, providing a unique feeling of privacy for its future residents.

With such an established natural landscape to work into, the architecture has been designed with a minimal material pallette of concrete and black vertical bands, in order to create a backdrop for surruonding vegetation.

Three habitable structures connect via a outdoor covered hallway to create a zoned family house which follows the natural topography and steps down on each edge of the ridge. This principle of separating living zones via an outdoor hallway is a principle used throughout modernist architecture, and is designed to separate the private and entertaiment areas of the house.

The proposed vehicular crossover is relocated to the southern side of the site, in order to allow for a private north facing living area and outdoor area. The shaded southern side of the site is then used as an entry area handling parking and pedestrian circulation between the structures.

The use of the center of the site as an entry point, also enables views outward and down each hillside of the site, which are revealed upon entry to each structure and give a sense of privacy, with all circulation around the site being located centrally.
