A reminder to all riders and parents that Daylight Savings starts on PC day – put your clocks FORWARD one hour.

DC Report I am looking forward to the Spring season. The Winter has dreary and overcast and it is often harder to be motivated to ride after school. Now we have more light and better weather – no doubt some ponies have also realised that ”this must be school holidays” as I am being ridden much more. Be careful of founder, with the Spring grass growth ponies get fat quickly and it will soon be time to organise the “Jenny Craig” weight loss paddock – Jessica’s horse is already locked up. Parents might find it is a good idea to lunge a fresh pony before the jockey gets on. Ten minutes on the lunge takes the spring out of many pony’s step and this can make for a much more pleasant and calm ride. Congratulations to Emily McDonald on achieving her K Certificate. It is a lot of work to complete the various optional sections. There are now about 10 riders in the club who have completed K Certificate. A reminder any riders who want to complete D or D* Certificate, please inform me before the rally so that I can schedule a time, I have one candidate already for the October Rally. Helen Kirkpatrick BPC Horse Trials – Saturday 13th and Sunday 14th October This is one of our major events of the year. It gives our riders a great opportunity to complete the three phases on home turf. It also provides a great opportunity to complete some maintenance around the grounds from spraying around arenas to filling the hoof print holes on the cross country course. There will be some working bees to do some of these maintenance jobs. I imagine there will also be plenty of opportunity to put some posts and bunting up at the pony club rally – many hands make light work. There will be lots of jobs to be done on the weekend. Most of them do not require any past experience, as the tasks can be explained on the day. Please work out what time you can give, Yvonne is very good at working the rosters around when your child is competing. BPC Novelty Show – 15 September Some of members competed at this show. The good weather held and there was some good racing. There is on more show to be held in this series on 21st October at Braybrook/Truginina PC. Not all the aggregate scores for the series have been decided – so there is an opportunity for some riders to win the High Point or Reserve High Point Series Championship by competing at the final event.

Thanks to Mark Daffey for judging at 3 of the shows in this series. Nichola Larpent is currently running second in the 12-15 year age group with 81 points, however Ebony Daffey is only 4 points behind. Maddie Rumler is currently holding second place in the 10 – 12 year series aggregate. Wurth Coffield is coming third in the 7 years and under by just one point. Thank you to the Daffey, Rumler, Larpent, Doodt, Cohalan and Kirkpatrick families for helping at the show. The profit was $480. PCAV Sate Magazine Ballarat Pony Club members featured in the state magazine – Kelsey Mason and Yvette Cashmore had photos accompanying the May Horse Trials article, Melissa Doodt had a photo for achieving her B Certificate and Briony Deeker Fradd was photographed riding at the Inter Zone Grade 4 Horse Trials. Competing at Shows In the Spring there are lots of opportunities to compete at shows and gymkhanas in the pony club or topsy rings. We cannot use the cross country course at the October rally due to the Horse Trials so I have taken the opportunity to have Lesley Brown instruct on show ring craft. I have seen many of Lesley’s horses with many champion sashes at agricultural shows. She will explain the difference between ridden horse classes and rider classes, the finer points of showmanship classes and give some pointers on presentation for smartest on parade. Putting this knowledge into practice. There is a gymkhana run by Smythesdale PC in October – programs are probably at saddlery stores at the moment. Ballarat Agricultural Show Friday 9th November has local rider classes, a topsy ring and the pony club classes. (Please note the change PC classes are on Friday starting at 11.30am) It is cheaper to pre-enter On Sunday 18th November Beaufort Agricultural Show has pony club classes and topsy classes. There are trophies for all first places and other prizes at this show. Daylesford Agricultural Show has pony club classes on Sunday 25th November. Finally – Ballarat PC has its own Christmas gymkhana at the December rally. This is only open to BPC members. Entry is of course free and there are ribbons to 6th place. There will be a junior rider /pony ring and a senior rider/Galloway horse ring with a total of 6 champion and reserve champion sashes to be awarded. There will be some show jumping, including a topsy show jumping ring which starts off with poles on the ground. Helen Kirkpatrick Ballarat DC

To All riders intending to Ride at PCAV Horse Trials You must wear you Pony Club uniform for Dressage (competition uniform) and on the Cross Country you can wear Silks over you uniform (if you have them) but this must be in BALLARAT PONY CLUB COLOURS. Not pink, purple, green but Navy Blue & White. Not every rider will have silks, so you must be in Ballarat Pony Club competition uniform (Jumper, Tie and White shirt.) OR Club Tee Polo shirts can be worn on Cross country and showjumping if the day is very hot. Competitors always look good in their official Pony Club uniform (Jumper White Shirt & Tie. If you are lucky enough to win a ribbon remember to present in your Pony club uniform – not tracky pants over your jodhpurs, a daggy windcheater and runners. This should be remembered for all competitions that you attend. Hair – All hair is to be tied up – not long pony tails as this obscures you back number. If any officials cannot see both front & back numbers you can be eliminated from the competition. Piercing – If you have ear piercing they must be removed or taped over. Any facial piercing should be also removed or taped. Tongue piercing should be removed – if you fall off you horse – this could cause damage to teeth and tongue or you may swallow it.

Please note: As the grounds are being used more throughout the week, Saturdays & Sundays for various clinics and rallies. All riders/instructors must notify the secretary prior to use. I check emails at night so I must have notification the day/night before & I check my mobile for any messages when at work throughout the day. The committee has the right to retract keys & agreements if this is not adhered too. I will be sending out new key applications to update data base in the near future. I can be contacted on 0407883321 or email at: [email protected] . Thanks Yvonne

Mum’s Report!! On Sunday the 9th of September,2012 Scarlett Cohalan competed in the Kingston Combined Training Day with her two ponies, Chester and Dakota. I was busy helping for the day so she had the assistance of two strappers, Maddie Rumler and Phoebe Cohalan. It was so great to see the teamwork that the girls showed throughout the day and I think that the Ponies and Scarlett believed themselves to be royalty with the amount of attention and training they received from her grooms. The day went really well with Scarlett gaining First place overall in Grade 5 with her mount, Dakota against 13 other riders and Third place in the Dressage with her trusty steed Chester. This was Scarlett’s first official Combined Training Day competition and I believe that she has well and truly been bitten with the competition bug. She is eagerly looking forward to going to the Ballarat HT, but perhaps she will have to groom and saddle the horses herself for that one as Phoebe will be hot on her heels. Just seeing the girls working so well together and taking care of each other was the biggest prize for a very proud Mum.

- Jenny Cohalan.

Ballarat PC Horse Trials – Saturday 13th and Sunday14th October

This event is big. It takes a lot of work to set up the cross country, a show jumping course and 5 dressage rings. There is a fair bit of managing to get about 200 riders slotted into a timetable,

and then organising them during the weekend. The end result is that we hope these riders will enjoy competing at our wonderful facility and

find us efficient and helpful. We also will make a bit of money for the pony club. If you wish to ride – get you entry in early (online) as the May Horse Trials closed before the

due date and Bacchus Marsh PC Horse Trials were a sell out before they were rained out. We also need all families to be available to help. We can generally work job rosters around

your child riding. There will be roster lists up at the September and October rally There will be a working bee during the September school holidays, at a date to be fixed.

ANNOUNCEMENTS: November Newsletter Closing date for the next newsletter is the 25th of October.

Send in your articles and photos…please Everyone loves to hear what pony club members have been up to – whether it is your first topsy show, grade 5 horse trials, preliminary, eventing, a Royal Show, a new horse or competing at a zone or state level. It only takes a few sentences and even better, a picture. The editor can’t be everywhere. Your outing might inspire another member to compete or inform them.
