Contact is the national contemporary arts organisation that places young people’s decision-making and leadership at the heart of everything. Young people aged 13+ work alongside our staff in deciding our programme, making staff appointments, and as full Board members. The result is a remarkable, diverse and exciting programme for everyone — whatever your age.

April — August 2015 at Contact Summer 2015 sees an outstanding run of brand new performances produced and commissioned by Contact, working with a wealth of national partners.

In April we present the first performances of Fuel’s The Spalding Suite, a new Contact/Southbank Centre commission. With a creative team including Contact favourites Inua Ellams (text) and Benji Reid (director/choreographer), and a talented cast with a passion for basketball, this is set to be massive.

Then we present an important new Contact/National Theatre of Scotland Co-Production — Rites — exploring the complex issues around Female Genital Mutilation (FGM). Artists Cora Bissett and Yusra Warsama have worked with health workers, lawyers, activists and young people affected by the practice, to create a powerful piece of verbatim theatre.

In May, Flying Solo Festival sees new Contact commissions from Cheryl Martin, Keisha Thompson, Jackie Hagan, Ester Natzijl and Louise Orwin, alongside a brilliant visiting programme of maverick artists including Chris Brett Bailey, jamie lewis hadley and the vacuum cleaner.

In July, Contact Young Company work alongside Brazilian artists Rodolfo Amorim (Grupo IX de Teatro) and Renato Bolelli Rebouças, and Manchester performer Lowri Evans, to create a haunting and evocative site-specific performance in an empty row of houses in Brunswick, set for demolition and regeneration.

Other highlights include a unique sensory performance event conceived by our young programming team, Re:Con, followed by the best of new young and emerging European theatre presented as part of Flare Festival 2015.

Contact Produces

As well as the shows and events taking place in our building, at any one time Contact has over 10 productions and commissions touring to venues, festivals and communities nationwide. The work is highly distinctive in its diversity and social engagement, and its strong focus on issues relevant to young people.

Our major recent co-productions — Rites, No Guts No Heart No Glory and The Spalding Suite — tour to theatres nationally in 2015. Meanwhile, previous Contact commissions by Chanje Kunda, Eggs Collective, Kate O’Donnell, and Greg Wohead continue to tour widely.

Jackie Hagan will present her new piece for young people, Some People Have Too Many Legs, in rural venues this summer with partners National Rural Touring Forum.

Finally in Spring 2015 Contact Young Company and our Level Up music project participants both performed in London — at Battersea Arts Centre and The Roundhouse. This signals us starting to fulfil a new ambition to present our young people’s activity nationally and internationally over the coming three years.

Future Fires

Future Fires is our leadership programme for young artists interested in creating socially engaged art projects in their own communities. Following an outstanding year in 2014, we are now planning to develop Future Fires into a national programme.

We also offer surgery sessions for young people aged 18-30 who would like support in:

• Developing an idea for a socially engaged community project.

• Finding funding and writing applications for a socially engaged project.

• Finding development opportunities, training and advice on career progression.

Der aufhaltsame Aufstieg des Arturo Ui

By Bertolt Brecht.

1930s Chicago: Bertolt Brecht’s allegorical satire in which Adolf Hitler’s rise to power is filtered through the story of mobster Arturo Ui and his hoodlums, attempting to take over the cauliflower racket by ruthlessly disposing of the opposition. A story that is both comic and thrilling in equal measure.

Fuel presents

The Spalding SuiteConceived by Inua Ellams and directed by Benji Reid. Commissioned by Southbank Centre and Contact.

A new physical theatre show inspired by the UK's basketball sub-culture.

Fresh poetry combined with contemporary movement celebrates the elegance and beauty of basketball. Seen from a British perspective, The Spalding Suite gets to the heart and soul of the gravity-defying game and delves into the hopes and dreams of those who play it.

Six dynamic performers mix live beatboxing, Hip Hop, music, moves and poetry, taking us from the fleeting high of the score and the robust camaraderie of the team, to the poignant lows of a body too worn to play the game.

This production tours nationally following opening at Contact.Funded by Arts Council England and a Wellcome Trust Arts Award.

The watching entity takes shape. A demon-like creature attempts to hijack her life in order to be able to exist. The woman fights back. Or is she breathing her own life into the creature? They seem to merge.

jamie lewis hadley: Blood on the StreetsThere’s a new Sweeney Todd in town, only this one's not out to kill!

A public performance lecture situated within the window of a barbershop. The lecture explores the history of bloodletting as a medical practice, tracing its roots in ancient medicine, the rise of the barber-surgeon and the current understanding of blood within modern medicine.

Last Summer Jackie Hagan went to hospital with a mystery disease, they told her she was going to die and cut bits of her off. Luckily she didn’t die, but she did eat loads and loads of Kit Kats because she thought it wouldn't matter if she got fat.

She also lost a leg, made BFFs with an old woman who looked like a threadbare tennis ball (with eyes), fell in love with a posh man called Miles, and found her Dad.

Some People Have Too Many Legs is a show about facing your fears and throwing glitter at them.

Contact and The National Theatre of Scotland

Rites A co-production between the National Theatre of Scotland and Contact supported by the Scottish Refugee Council and Dignity Alert Research Forum.

Rites is a powerful and provocative new production exploring the deep-rooted cultural practice of Female Genital Mutilation (FGM — sometimes called female circumcision). Created by Olivier award-winning director, Cora Bissett (Roadkill, Glasgow Girls) and acclaimed Mancunian theatre-maker Yusra Warsama (Make-Believe, There Has Possibly Been An Incident).

Rites is based on recent interviews and true stories from girls affected in the UK, mothers who feel under pressure to continue the practice, and the experiences of midwives, lawyers, police officers, teachers and health workers trying to effect change in communities. The show weaves different perspectives into a multi-voiced production exploring the complexities, misconceptions and challenges involved in trying to change what is to many, a fundamental rite of passage.

The Flare International Festival of New Theatre 2015

Contact Lounge Mon/Tue: 11am to 9pm. Wed to Fri: 11am to late. Sat: open late for shows.

Contact Lounge, with Free WiFi, is the perfect spot for meeting, chatting and general lounging. We serve fantastic coffees and teas to drink in or take away, a wide range of wines, beers and spirits, and snacks.

The Veggie Café provides great vegetarian food and cakes from our Lounge every Monday to Friday from 11am.

You can also hire the Lounge for parties, graduations or meetings.

All profits from Contact Lounge go to supporting the work we do with young people.

Access

This brochure is available in large print upon request.We have a flat foyer entrance, ground floor access to our main theatre space and Contact Lounge, lift access to our other spaces and accessible toilets on every floor.

Guide dogs can stay with you, or be looked after by a member of staff. Just let us know when you book.

We sometimes have BSL interpreted performances — check out individual events for details or contact our Box Office to learn more.

If you have any access requirements, please call or text the Duty Manager on 07970 094 069.

Tickets• No booking fees.• Concessions are available to anyone

receiving unemployment or disability benefit, full time students, senior citizens, and young people up to 18 years of age. Proof of status/ID is needed or you will be charged full price.

• Groups: Buy 9 tickets and get your 10th ticket free.

• Donations: We are a registered charity — if you’d like to donate to our work with young people, you can do so when you book a ticket.

• Ticket collection: Avoid the queues and ask us to post your tickets out to you. Alternatively, please allow plenty of time for collection from Box Office on the night or collect your tickets in advance.

• Advance booking is always recommended. Shows often sell out in advance and we cannot guarantee tickets will be available on the door.

• Latecomers may be refused entry into a show once the performance starts. Please ensure you arrive in plenty of time to avoid disappointment.

• We do not offer refunds on tickets. Tickets purchased are non-refundable.
