Cannabis 101

SATIVA Sativa strains are generally cerebral in effect, with uplifting characteristics. They are best used during the daytime.

HYBRID Hybrid strains are a balance between Sativa and Indica strains. They are known for relaxing, balanced, and blissful effects.

Sativa-dominant hybrid: Cerebral sensation with a relaxing body effect Indica-dominant hybrid: Full-body sensation with a relaxing cerebral effect

INDICA Indica strains are known for full-body, relaxing, and sedative effects. They are used best at night for sleep-enhancing properties.

Cannabinoids Cannabinoids are chemical compounds found in the cannabis plant which bind and react with the human endocannabinoid system to produce therapeutic effects. The most commonly known cannabinoids are Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and Cannabidiol (CBD). More than 100 other compounds are found in the plant. Though the number of peer-reviewed scientific papers on cannabinoids is very limited, research on the ability of cannabinoids to treat disease is remarkable. Scientists around the world are devoting their research time to learning more about cannabinoids and their vast therapeutic applications.

Terpenes Terpenes are another important compound found in the cannabis plant. They are responsible for its unique aroma. The wide variety of terpenes give different varieties of cannabis a wide range of scents. In recent years, scientists have found that terpenes do much more than produce an aroma. These compounds may boost and expand the therapeutic effects of cannabinoids, especially THC. Terpenes can be extracted from the cannabis plant and infused into distilled and extracted THC and CBD.

Dosing and Administration Determining the right dose of cannabis can make or break your first experience. Too large of a dose has known side effects such as anxiety, paranoia, dry mouth, etc. Nature’s Remedy recommends keeping this phrase in mind when trying a new cannabis product: “Start Low and Go Slow”. In other words, try a low dose, then increase very slowly until your desired effect is achieved. Effects may be delayed two or more hours. Wait for effects before taking additional dose. There are several ways to administer marijuana. Different products will have different effects and potencies. The effects will vary with each method, sometimes affecting the length of time it takes for the medicine to take effect, or the length of time that it remains effective. Each consumer should find which manner is best for them. EDIBLES/CONSUMABLES Cannabis can be infused into butter or oil that is then cooked into food or food products. Edibles usually take longer to take effect, so wait and start slow! Edibles include anything from cookies, to brownies, to capsules.

TINCTURES Tinctures and sprays are concentrated forms of cannabis in an alcohol-based or oil-based solution. They are very concentrated and require careful dosage levels. They are to be taken under the tongue. If mixed into water or other beverages, then follow the rules of an edible.

TOPICALS Topical cannabis products are applied directly to the skin. All topicals can take a few minutes to take effect with 1-2 hours of duration. If the topical includes THC, avoid areas of the groin or underarms. Wash hands after every use. Could have a psychotropic effect.

VAPORIZERS A vaporizer is a device that is able to extract the therapeutic ingredients in the plant material (cannabinoids) at a much lower temperature than required for burning cannabis. This allows consumers to inhale the active ingredients as a vapor and spares them the irritating effects of smoking. Effects can be felt within minutes and wear off within 90 minutes to 4 hours. Start with 1 single inhale lasting 3 seconds and wait 20 minutes before repeating. Vaporizer cartridges should be stored upright and not lying down.

SMOKING Cannabis can be smoked through a pipe, marijuana cigarette, or using a water pipe. Effects can be felt within minutes, and depending on the consumer, strain, cannabinoid content, etc., the effects typically wear off fully within 90 minutes to 4 hours. Start with 1 single inhale lasting 3 seconds and wait 20 minutes before repeating.

Tolerance, Dependence, Withdrawal Regardless of the type of medication, some consumers may experience tolerance or dependence. Tolerance is prolonged and excessive use will result in a larger dose to acquire the same effect. Withdrawal is when a consumer becomes dependent on a substance and stops use, physical and metal symptoms will occur.

SIGNS OF DEPENDENCE: having intense urges for the drug that block out other thoughts needing more of the drug for the same effect taking larger amounts of the drug over a longer period of time than you intended

making certain that you maintain a supply of the drug spending money on the drug, even though you can’t afford it not meeting obligations and work responsibilities, or cutting back on social or

recreational activities because of drug use continuing to use the drug even though you know it is causing problems in your life or

causing you physical or psychological harm doing things to get the drug that you would not normally do, such as stealing driving or doing other risky activities when you’re under the influence of the drug spending a good deal of time getting the drug, using the drug, or recovering from the

effects of the drug failing in your attempts to stop using the drug

experiencing withdrawal symptoms when you attempt to stop taking the drug
