Welcome

Welcome to the University of South Australia, and the beginning of a rewarding and inspiring journey of discovery.

We are an innovative, outward-looking institution with a strong commitment to excellence. We provide the widest range of degree programs in South Australia, and have a reputation for excellence that extends across our four academic divisions. Some of the world’s brightest minds teach and research at the University in the areas of business, education, arts and social sciences, health sciences, information technology, materials science, engineering and the environment.

In the 2011 QS World University Rankings, the University of South Australia recorded the fastest rise of any Australian university (for the second consecutive year), and we are ranked in the top three per cent of more than 10,000 universities worldwide. In addition, the University recently scored above the national average for broad overall satisfaction in the annual Australian Graduates Survey.

Our world-class research informs our teaching and learning, and a large part of our ongoing success stems from the collaborations we have developed with key partners in business, industry, government and the community, which complement the professional-focused nature of our degrees. As shown in the Graduate Careers Australia employment results, our graduate employment rate over recent years has been consistently above average and, in 2011, was two percentage points higher than the national average.

The University also maximises its international links to remain at the forefront of research and teaching. We continue to recruit academic staff from around the world who are research leaders in their fields, and who provide students with a combination of high-level academic expertise and professional experience. On two occasions in recent years our academics have received the nation’s highest honour for university teachers - the Prime Minister’s Award for University Teacher of the Year.

The University of South Australia also continues to provide opportunities for people from less advantaged, regional and remote backgrounds to attend university, and offers ongoing support that enables successful completion of their degrees.

In addition, the University is making significant investments to develop some of the most exciting learning and research environments in Australia. Over coming years, we are investing more than $1 billion in physical and virtual infrastructure, new initiatives, and improved services across our campuses. This will further enhance our standing as an education provider of first choice, and ensure we continue to be recognised for the quality of our teaching, learning and research.

At the University of South Australia, we strive to ensure that the inquiring minds of today receive the opportunities and the tools to tackle the challenges of tomorrow. Our degrees are recognised and respected throughout the world, and will provide you with the experience, knowledge, skills and confidence you need to forge a successful career.

I wish you every success in your academic endeavours.

Construction management and economicsModern construction is a complex, highly organised commercial business dealing with large capital investments, sophisticated construction techniques, highly skilled labour and real-time project information systems. Every construction project is different, with new challenges in planning, design, construction, commissioning and evolving project teams. This brings alternative ideas and fresh problems to solve. Rapid changes in technology continue to test the ingenuity and enterprise of estimators, project managers, contract administrators, schedulers and other experts in the field.

‘I chose to study at the University of South Australia as it is the only university in Adelaide offering the construction management program. I like the mix of courses, meeting fellow students with similar backgrounds and the professionalism of the lecturers.

I am a mature aged student with 20-plus years of work experience, with the past six years in construction-related roles. I have found this program very worthwhile from a practical view point.

It is held in high regard in the industry so it is worth doing if you wish to have a construction management career. After I graduate I hope to get a full-time job as a senior property professional.’

‘I always seemed to have an interest in buildings and architecture and found this program included a range of courses that suited my interests. If you have a combined interest in architecture, design, maths and science this is worth considering.

This program starts out quite broad, which allows students to determine the area they would like to be involved with. It can lead you to numerous career paths and a high number of opportunities, as many students start working in the industry from second year onwards.

There are a variety of hands-on experiences, including site visits and exposure to people in the industry and this program is closely based on what occurs in reality.

This program is recognised in most places of the world so I would consider working overseas in Europe for a year after graduation.’
