INTRODUCTION TO CIVIL SECTOR:
Civil engineering is a professional engineering discipline that deals
with the design, construction, and maintenance of the physical and naturally
built environment, including works like roads, bridges, canals, dams, and
buildings.

WHAT IS CONSTRUCTION …?
The building of something, typically a large
structure.
Clearing, excavating, and grading of land and
other activity associated with buildings,
structures, or other types of real property such as
bridges, dams, roads.
Construction industry is the second largest industry of the
country.
Integral part of country’s infrastructure and industrial
development.
It includes hospitals, schools, townships, offices, houses and
other building.
In general, there are three types of construction:

Building construction
Heavy / civil construction
Industrial construction
CONSTRUCTION SECTOR:
Construction accounts for over 50% of national
capital investment in most countries.
It provides about 7% world employment.
The construction industry offers the much needed
employment for a large number of the world’s
poorest people.
It also employs a large number of female workers.
WHY CONSTRUCTION???
Development of world class infrastructure is
required to achieve faster growth of the economy.
Considering the critical need of developing
infrastructure in the country, construction activities
are crucial for creation physical infrastructure in
the country.

Growth in Asian powerhouses and a cyclical rebound in the us will
fuel massive growth in world construction over next 10 years.
Global construction to grow by 70% from $7.2 trillion today to $12
trillion by 2020.
China, US and India generate over half of the $4.8 trillion growth.
The construction sector worldwide currently accounts for more
than 11% of global GDP and the report predicts that it will account
for 13.2% of world GDP by 2020.

Without infrastructure growth it is difficult to
achieve target of double digit growth of economy.
Investment in infrastructure in the 12th five year
plan is targeted at around $1 trillion.
Nearly half of the investment will be channelized
into construction projects.
Employment Potential:Construction sector provides direct/indirect employment to
about 35 million people and is expected to employ 92 million
persons by 2022. (50 million additional jobs)
