Quintessential Marine Science Center

The 29-foot, 13,000 lb. gray whale pictured above swam in the Salish Sea and died nearby in May of 2016. The Cascadia Research Collective conducted a necropsy of the young female to determine the cause of her death. By collecting her skeleton, we are able to honor this noble marine mammal while she teaches us about the health of our Salish Sea habitat and inspires us to understand, appreciate and conserve this precious resource.

Every day, our Marine Exhibit showcases the spectacular diversity of species that live in these waters. In the Natural History Exhibit, rotating displays explain the benefits of dam

removal and local salmon recovery, while ongoing citizen science projects and a nature journaling station offer visitors an informative, interactive educational experience.

At the Port Townsend Marine Science Center, we thrive on rolling up our sleeves, donning hazmat suits, and digging into challenging projects. The Gray Whale Project was messy, smelly, slimy, sweaty, and hard—an ideal undertaking for our staff and volunteers!

Once again we partnered with AmeriCorps and Washington State Parks to clear over

1,100 pounds of invasive European dune grass and Scotch Broom from nearby beaches.

At the annual Wooden Boat Festival, staff and volunteers gave over 170 people a first-hand look at the process of ocean acidification by asking them to blow through a straw into a glass of pH sensitive water. Students from nearby Chimacum High School dove deeper into the subject in OASSIS, a 12-week PTMSC course with self-designed research and field trips to NOAA labs and Taylor Shellfish that culminated with community presentations.

In partnership with the Northwest Watershed Institute, seven high school students participated the in the Young Environmental

Stewards program to earn school credit by volunteering in the Marine Exhibit and conducting marine debris surveys.

Volunteers have always been the heart and soul of the Port Townsend Marine Science Center. More than 60 people stepped up to help with the Gray Whale Project–a collaboration that included Navy personnel, NOAA and Cascadia Research Collective scientists, divers, boat owners, net riggers, greenhouse owners, composters, silica makers, bone washers and movers, and our state park friends.

PTMSC volunteers continue to power myriad citizen science projects, such as the Marine Mammal Stranding Network, monitoring Sea Star Wasting Disease, checking for harmful algal blooms, and collecting water samples at local beaches.

In 2016, the PTMSC formed a new partnership with the Washington Department of Natural Resources to conduct monthly bird and marine mammal surveys in the Protection Island Aquatic Reserve. We were also invited to present two citizen science sessions at the Salish Sea Ecosystem Conference in Vancouver, BC.

Dear Friends,What a whale of a year 2016 was! And it is all thanks to you, our Port Townsend Marine Science Center Pod!

Gray whale pods are perhaps the best confirmation of the African proverb, If you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go far, go together. Migrating 16,000 miles, these giants travel in small groups called pods, supporting and feeding each other while they work collaboratively to fend off danger.

Gray whale pods are not only very successful, they also represent a remarkable paradigm for the success of our PTMSC community.

For nearly 35 years, our strength has been grounded in—or should I say, buoyed by—the power of this place, our sense of purpose and the dedicated passion of all you for a healthier Salish Sea. A story from 2016 provides a perfect illustration.

On May 16, 2016, we got a call from Kristin Wilkinson of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration asking for our help. Could we ‘disappear’ a 30-foot, 15-ton gray whale carcass from Indian Island in less than 48 hours? Without hesitation, we said “Yes!”

The U.S. Navy allowed the NOAA to bring the remains of the gray whale, CRC-1524, ashore for a necropsy. Less than 24 hours later, you, our pod, came through with

over $28,000 worth of in-kind support, including a Spectra net donated by a local fisherman to wrap the whale, countless hours of volunteer and boat time, and the exceptional support of Commander Nicholas Vander Griend and his crew at the Indian Island Naval Magazine. Within 48 hours, Team Whale had ‘burrito-ed’ and submerged the carcass for a controlled decomposition that will allow us the use of the

skeleton for educational purposes for years to come.

The first word in our mission is inspire and I am continually inspired by this magnificent place and our purpose to conserve the Salish Sea. But most of all, I am inspired by the passion and commitment demonstrated by you, the Port Townsend Marine Science Center Pod, when you rise to the occasion, roll up your sleeves, and enthusiastically meet any challenge head-on.

Given the organizaton's secure investement position, the Board approved a deficit budget for 2015 and 2016 designed to invest in staff capacity in order to achieve the goals in our strategic plan. 2017 is projected to return to a balanced budget, one year earlier than planned.
