Despite very cold winter weather, sun rays were still shining brightly
like candlelight in the dark; and of
course the youth and children had
come out in huge numbers; most of
them came from Conquest for Lifesfocus areas like Westbury, Ennerdale,
Soweto (Meadowlands) and Orange
Farm, however others came from
other areas in Gauteng as well. Buzz-
ing like flies at Cecil Payne Stadium in
Maraisburg, west of Johannesburg,
they all had come to grace My Soccer
Festival with their presence which
took place on South Africas memora-
ble day, June 16, a National Youth
Day which is remembered for its
1976 Soweto Uprising, a protestagainst what youth of that time

some of the students who were pro-
testing were even gunned down by
police of the apartheid government,
one of them being Hector Peterson
who was 13 years old then.
However, according to Glen Steyn,
Conquest for Life CEO: June 16 My
Soccer Festival was not about sad
memories of the pain that 1976 youth
went through, but it was about giving
the youth of today opportunities and
empowerment to become agents of
change by developing their identity,
self worth, and a sense of commu-
nity. Said Steyn.
Since this youth day celebration took
place while South Africa was hosting
the magnificent 2010 FIFA World Cup,
Conquest for Life then decided to en-
title it My Soccer Festival to createsoccer excitement among the chil-
dren.

It is hard to believe that we are onthe second half of the year 2010
now. When this year started, like allother South Africans, here at Con-
quest for Life we were so excited and
filled with much anticipation as we all
knew that South Africa would host
the magnificent FIFA World Cup that
took place in June and July. But now
it is so unbelievable that this has be-
come a history in an eye blink. All
what all of us are left with now are
just memories, maybe not necessarily
about football, but we all experi-
enced the feeling of its presence inour country.
Although we are back to business
now and everything is back to nor-
mal, but here at Conquest for Life we
have so much and interesting reflec-
tions for the past two months.
It is interesting what children in-
volved in our programs got involved
into during June and July. On June 16,
we had My Soccer Festival event in
which we celebrated a National
Youth Day in football fashion asSouth Africa was hosting the FIFA
World Cup. The explosive excitement
was beyond our expectations as chil-
dren come out in huge numbers just
to have fun. They celebrated through
soccer and musical activities.
During the same month (June), we
also had a Soccer Coaching Clinic Pro-
gram that was facilitated by the Ole
Brasil Football Academy. Their aims
were to identify the football talents,
nourish children football skills and get
some of them to go to Brasil and trainthere. I was also happy to see dedica-
tion and involvement from other local
soccer development organizations
like: Sophiatown Football Academy, In
Touch and Florida F.C. that facilitated
our program.
Moreover, beside soccer activities,we also got our kids playing drum
beats with Batala South Africa, (a
drumming band) that also operates in
Brasil, Spain, USA and other major
countries in the world.
Through all these programs, what
matters to me is that they were all
about nothing else but children and
young people having fun, at the same
time having a lot of life experiences
and getting opportunities to widen
their horizons. Which was our dreamcome true here at Conquest for Life
as we strive to be a self-sustaining
youth organization, run by young
people, empowered to become
agents of change by developing their
identity, self worth, and a sense of
community.
We therefore sincerely thank every-
one that helped us in any way
through all our recent activities. As
we are heading for the year-end, we
are looking forward the fruitful futureand we hope to maintain all the rela-
tionships we established so far.

ducted by Brasilian drum masters

Over the past fifteen years, volun-teers have always been undoubtedly
important to the existence of Con-
quest for Life. And no matter where
in the world they come from, but
they always have some things to
say; things that reflect their differ-
ent experiences with Conquest for
Life.
We met her at Conquest for LifeWestbury offices; she is
a kind and soft-hearted
human being full of
love; when we asked to
feature her on this
newsletter, her smile
brightened up her face
like rising sun in the
morning. Her name is
Ateeqa Sanders
(pictured above), she is 18 years old
and lives in Newclare, west of Johan-nesburg; she is currently on Grade 12
at Chris J. Botha Secondary School.
Regarding her recent involvement
with Conquest for Life, she said:
Conquest for Life brought all good
and positive things in my life. It has
been a great learning experience in
terms of life and work. I can really say
that my involvement has prepared
me for all my life after school; I also
learned how to work and communi-
cate with other people effectively.I have also learned to be a good per-
son, to treat others with respect and
to be who I really I am. For me, Con-
quest for Life is not an organization,
but it is a home where I feel welcome, appreciated and cared for. They be-
lieve in hard work and helping the
community; and I would love to be
continuously involved with them to
help them make difference in the
community. Conquest has really
brought hope to all of us for a better
day; therefore I am really grateful for
the opportunity.As she finished tell-
ing her experiences at Conquest for
Life, she got emotional and started
weeping.After completing matric, Ateeqa
would love to travel to Brasil and the
Netherlands. She would also like to
pursue studies in beauty and fashion
related fields.
On the other hand, Jacqui Davis
(pictured, right) is an outgoing,
friendly, vibrant, outspoken, active
and open-minded person. She is also
very religious and at heart cares about
social development and certainly has
a good heart . She was born and bred
in Newclare; she is now
working for Classic fm as
a producer. We inter-
viewed her regarding
her involvement on Con-
quest for Lifes My Soc-
cer Festival that took
place on a Youth Day,
June 16 at Cecil Payne Stadium. She
said:Firstly, Id like to thank God formaking this day possible. Secondly,
Glen Steyn, CEO of Conquest for Life
for involving me in the organising of
the Youth Day event and also every
single person who was part of the
team. Many people have memorable
experiences throughout their lives.
Some may be losing their first tooth, a
first date, graduating high school, or
even a special event that made a dif-
ference. One of the most memorable
experiences in my life was the Youth
Day of Wednesday 16th
June 2010.
Even though the day was busy, my
heart was filled with joy and excite-
ment as I watched the children on the
stadium stands enjoying themselves
and making the most of their Youth
Day. Every individual should realize
the importance of Youth Day. Our
children are the future of our nationand the future of our country de-
pends upon the present children. If
the children do not develop in a
proper way, the country's future will
be ruined. The people that the youth
look up to should send a positive
message to the youngsters. They
should be concerned about the devel-
opment and well being of the chil-
dren. Michael Jordon sends a posi-
tive message to kids such as "stay in
school" and "dont do drugs". Let
this Youth Day remind us that we can
make a difference in the lives of the
less privileged and that we have the
ability to turn a bad situation into
good. This experience has made a big
impact on my life and has helped to
motivate and inspire me to know my
purpose in life.

"2010 is the year that will certainly
be remembered for soccer in SouthAfrica", Glen Steyn, Conquest for Life
CEO said this during Soccer Clinics
Awards' day on 25th
June at Cecil
Payne Stadium in Maraisburg.
Conquest for Life, Sophiatown Foot-
ball Academy and In Touch (football
developing organization) had brought
children from Westbury, Maraisburg,
Noordgesig, Eldorado Park and River-
lea to attend a two-weeks soccer
training skills program that was con-
ducted by Ole Brasil Football Acad-emy in order identify children with
talents; to harness and sharpen those
skills for the better future of football
in South Africa. This program started
on 14th
June, but when it ended on
25th
, awards like: participation certifi-
cates, T-shirts, football magazines,
balls and a lot of other gifts were
given to children as rewards for at-
tending soccer training program. The
government of Brasil and FIFA spon-
sored the program with most of the
gifts that children were awarded withfor their participation in the program.
Perry Rodriquez, a coach from Ole
Brasil Football Academy said that he
identified lot of distinguished and
various football talents here in South
African children, and if those children
were to be thoroughly trained at a
very young age, in the next 15 years
or so South Africa would be too far
regarding football development.
When the soccer training program
starts off again, skills development
will be measured on same partici-pants, but there will be room for new
participants as well. Stafford Abra-
hams from Sophiatown and Glen
Steyn from Conquest for Life thanked
children for their participation and
referred to this initiative as crucial for
social development and youth em-
powerment.

Batala, a Brazilian drum-band trains
youth from Westbury how to play
samba-reggae beats on drums. Train-
ing takes place at Conquest for Life
offices Saturdays. According to Glen
Steyn, CEO of Conquest for Life, theaim behind the Batala initiative is to
build racially and socially inclusive
communities, incorporating gender
sensitivity, and helping the youth to
express themselves through music.
Moreover, the long-term objective for
the drum training is to empower
young people, through self-sustainability and help them develop
their identity, self worth, and a sense
of community.
The trainees also played at the Con-
quest for Lifes Youth Day My SoccerFestival that took place at Cecil Payne
in Maraisburg on June 16. However,
even beyond, the drum activity will
be maintained, sustained and nour-
ished in order to help it grow within
the community. This activity is likely
to open the doors for the trainees,
they might join the travel around the
world and play in other areas where
Batala has other branches such as:
USA, UK, Austria, Spain and of course
Brazil
I love every minute of this activity,
my trainees are committed, dedi-
cated and passionate. And it would
be nice to see more of the youth
coming and learn our way of expres-
sion through playing of drums. said
Rosier Suzan, a Batala South Africa
drum conductor originally from Brazil.
Joshua Steyn, a drum trainee said
that he was pleased with this activity,
he is enjoying it and he would like to
take it further in future.
