1 Scope of Document

The sales manual for distributed time systems is a comprehensive document pointing out the advantages and key performance features of the Distributed Time System product family. It lists the technical key features of the different products and transforms them into handy arguments to promote the DTS solution. The sales manual shall be used by sales staff, consultants, planners, engineers, etc. to praise the DTS products to a (potential) customer in a non-technical approach. Chapter 2 contains the layout and description of an integrated solution for time system and clocks which is meant to display the time. Chapter 3 is dedicated to an integrated solution for a time reference system. Time references from MOBATIME master clocks guarantee that controlling and monitoring networks and the devices and instruments linked to them proceed in exact lockstep with one another. From chapter 4 to 10 the main products of a Distributed Time System are described. Each chapter consists of an application area which shows the different fields and projects in which the solutions or products can be applied. Furthermore, a table with key features and advantages (USP) is included in each chapter. For further information regarding the Distributed Time System and its related products please refer to the following websites: Technology: http://www.mobatime.com/technology/core-technologies/time-over-ethernet.html Products: http://www.mobatime.com/products.html

10 MOBA NMS

10.1 Application Area (Applications, Projects)

MOBA NMS is applied for the management of time systems and clocks as well as time refer-ence devices.

Management includes installation / commissioning, operation / monitoring, maintenance, up-dating.

Variety of installations: management from one single device (e.g. one slave clock) up to so-phisticated network installations with more than one thousand devices such as time servers, master clocks and slave clocks.

10.2 Key Features / Advantages

Key Feature Advantages (USP)

Central device management for all MOBATIME network devices o Analog and digital clocks o DTS-devices: time servers, master

clocks

One single, integrated software solution for the management of all devices of a time distribution system with DTS-products (time server, master clocks) and slave clocks.

Management includes installation / com-missioning, operation / monitoring, main-tenance, updating.

Support for more than 1000 devices with one software solution

Easy scalable system which covers the requirements of a small installation as well as large and complex time distribution sys-tems with numerous devices.

Device auto detection With one click the administrator can scan the whole time system and detect all slave clocks and DTS-devices.

If necessary the scanning function can be customized and focused on e.g. only a range of IP-addresses or chosen devices such as slave clocks with NBU 190.

The scanned devices are listed in MOBA NMS and can be arranged for convenient management and administration.

Group devices to logical units for easier management and group functions

The grouping function allows an exact mapping of the DTS-devices and slave clocks according to the installation in reali-ty (e.g. group slave clocks for each differ-ent platform, room, etc.) or the logical de-mands of the administrator.

Unicast and multicast support MOBA NMS supports the major network addressing modes.

Network monitoring features: o NTP monitor (multicast) o Time zone packets monitor (multicast) o Device status monitor (unicast / multi-

cast)

At commissioning and troubleshooting MOBA NMS offers different ways to eva-luate and ensure correct functionality and availability of DTS-devices and slave clocks in the time system.

Time zone editor The MOBA NMS administrator on his own can update and adjust time zones accord-ing to local needs. Provision of time zone updates from supplier is no longer neces-sary.

© MBS / February 2012 21 / 22 LE-800885.00-DTS Sales Manual

Integrated user management MOBA NMS is a password protected soft-ware platform to which different users (administrators) can have access.

The different users can be assigned vari-ous levels of rights to use MOBA NMS.

Java-based framework Due to its Java-based framework MOBA NMS is completely operating system inde-pendent.

Plug-In architecture MOBA NMS consists of a basic framework which can be extended by all sorts of Plug-Ins.

This Plug-Ins allows the implementation of actual and future network devices (time server, master clocks, and different slave clocks).

In addition updates of the Plug-Ins can provide new features and functionality.

Self update feature (online) Updates for the MOBA NMS are provided in a state-of-the-art procedure and access-ible in an easy way

Comparison MOBA NMS and web-based solutions:

MOBA NMS Web-based solution

MOBA NMS communicates over the network as well but with different protocols and acts therefore like a web interface.

Each device (clock) has a web server (HTTP server) that answers to requests on port 80. (The configuration is done over a web browser like the Internet Explorer, Firefox, Google Chrome, etc.)

Manage multiple devices (>1‟000) of same or different type at the same time.

There can be only one device configured in the web browser window.

Auto scan possibility for all devices (e.g. for the first installation).

No device scans possible.

A name can be set for each device. The IP address must not be known for the manage-ment.

IP address or DNS name must be known to connect to the web interface. The DNS name has to be assigned by a DNS system (DNS server) and must be configured by a network administrator.

Advanced device management:

Create logical device groups (e.g. for each building, floor, room, etc.)

Monitor one or multiple device groups

No advanced management or monitoring possible.

Management of an entire clock system poss-ible: Master clocks and time servers can be inte-grated and managed with MOBA NMS.

No management of clock systems possible. Configure each device individual.

Unicast and multicast communication. Multicast provides great advantages for the configuration and causes less network load.

Unicast only.

Operating system independent (JAVA) Compatibility problems with different web browsers.

Supervision possible. No supervision possible.

Additional features:

NTP and time zone packets monitoring

Time zone table editor

Extendable by plug-ins

No additional features possible because each device is independent.

Parallel firmware update Updates have to be done for each device manually. (Takes much more time)

Security: Own communication protocol Integrated user management Different user access levels (write / read only)

Open protocol

Security must be implemented on each device

Username and password have to be configured on each device! (Protocol is still open.)

Log functions for error analysis No log functions available

Integration in an external supervision system possible. (External system opens MOBA NMS.)

Integration in an external supervision system possible. (External system opens web browser with device IP.)
