Why should I save in my retirement plan?
What is a 457(b) Plan?
Simply put, it’s a plan that helps you to save money for your future. The main decision you have to make is “Do I want to retire?” If your answer is “Yes”, then you should save.
What is a 401(a) Plan?
Simply put, it’s a plan where the City of Jonesboro matching contributions are deposited and invested for you.
I want to save. What are the advantages of saving through in my Plan?
• Your contribution is automatically deducted from your paycheck. This means you won’t have to bedisciplined and set aside a portion of your pay in a savings account. Your employer does it for you.
• Your contribution will be matched $1 for $1 up to 5% of your pay. So, if your semi-monthly grosspay is $1,000 and you contribute 5% ($50) each pay period, then the City of Jonesboro willcontribute $50 to your account each pay period.
• You have a team of participant educators to help guide you through both the accumulation anddistribution phases of your life.
• You can contribute pretax dollars to the Plan and defer the income tax on those contributions until youstart receiving distributions.
Is it worth saving right now if I don’t have much to save?
Absolutely. Any amount that you can begin to save now will make a difference later in life. Your plan allows you to increase your contribution at any time. You can start small and increase your contribution a little bit each year.
• If you make $1,000 now and save 3% of your check – your contribution is $30. Good Start!• If you slowly increase by 1% each year, your contributions and account balance will grow. Great Finish!
Won’t I have other sources of retirement income?
You might, but Social Security won’t be sufficient to cover your costs in retirement. If you’re fortunate enough to have a pension plan, that’s wonderful, but wouldn’t it be nice to have an additional source of income at retirement?
